Bathroom tiles done wrong. Opinions? *pics*

They've done my bathroom wrong, the feature herringbone wall looks as I hoped but the white tiles are supposed to have white grout. We have a separate en suite and WC that are half tiled, with the small metro tiles which have dark grout but I didn't want it on 3 fully tiled walls in my bathroom so went for larger tiles in here with white tiles.

My partner thinks it looks better this way and to leave it, I want to ask them to change it to what I asked for. Opinions?

I absolutely wouldn't change the grout on the herringbone tiles, I think it looks classy as it is.

Grouting the white tiles white will make them look like one solid block wall, the feature wall looks like that at the moment and draws your eye as one solid feature, it won't look dirty against the white tile grout at all, you will have a look of two continuous features. If you white grout the feature wall it will break it up and it will look broken up against the solid white much like the white tiles look now with the dark grout.

Gemma2019 · 22/07/2021 14:34

The whole thing would look better with white grout. I think the dark grout with the herringbone doesn't show the beauty of those tiles enough and it doesn't look clean.

It's a nice sized room isn't it. I'm very envious of all the work you are getting done.

DrNo007 · 22/07/2021 14:41

Dark grout looks much better and is so much easier to keep looking clean. I have given up trying to clean our white grout with white tiles (inherited from previous owner)--the grout has gone a pinky grey due to mould.

DrNo007 · 22/07/2021 14:45

Plus in this room the dark grout with the white tiles sort of ties the wall in visually with the herringbone wall. It's lovely! I am envious.

TheQueensCousin · 22/07/2021 15:51

Grey grout ties in better with the herringbone tiles. More cohesive imho 🙂

TilingTiles · 22/07/2021 16:22

They are willing to scrape all the grout out and re do it, I just need to say yes or no and whether it's the white walls or the herringbone too. There's deffo something I just don't like about it at the moment.

I think what's most jarring here is that you've laid the white tiles one on top of the other rather than brick style which would have looked more in keeping with the herringbone. But too late now. Do the bath panel dark for sure to link with the basin

sskanky · 22/07/2021 16:38

White grout would look miles better and in fact laying the white tiles vertically would too. Just get it done, 2 days of pain for the result you actually want.

Bluesheep8 · 22/07/2021 16:42

I agree. I suggested exactly that upthread and was told that laying them brick effect was dated.

tinkerbellla · 22/07/2021 16:55

I love the dark grout, looks more modern. Our tiler advised against white as it doesn't look nice for long.

TedGlenn · 22/07/2021 17:01

Do it in two stages - white grout for white tiles. Then see how you feel about the feature wall.

0DimSumMum0 · 22/07/2021 17:01

I like the dark grout on the white but because the tiles are so much bigger they are really distracting. Because of this I think I'd be tempted to change the grout on the white tiles to white so the size is not so obvious and also change the grout on the herringbone to white to make that wall pop! Are you having the same type of black shower screen too? If you are I think it will look totally different once that's up!

TilingTiles · 22/07/2021 17:23

Only an edit, but that blends better right? I know the floor doesn't match but that's a separate issue that I'm hoping a big bath mat will fix

Oh yes, much better!!!

ElizabethTudor · 22/07/2021 17:43
@TilingTiles honestly I think it’s both. At this stage I’d be inclined to suck up cost of removing the tiles you don’t like an starting again.

I’d be inclined to run the herringbone wound both short ends of the bath and then paint the rest of the bathroom. There’s no reason to tile the entire bathroom and that could be quite cost effective.
I was going to suggest this.
If you don’t like it, now is the time to change it.
If you said white grout in your emails then you can justify getting them to take the tiles off. And then say you’ve changed your mind anyway. And just paint the walls, so the gorgeous herringbone wall is the main feature. Then, the fact the floor tiles are a slightly different white to the wall tiles won’t be an issue either.
I also think then, the grey grout on the herringbone won’t be an issue, as that looks very good with it.

StapMe · 22/07/2021 17:43

I'd keep the dark grout, looks fine and won't discolour like white would. And then I'd congratulate myself for avoiding those manky mould stains. But since white is what you specified, I'd negotiate a suitable (hefty!) reduction in price.
PS. I'm a tightwad......

Vodkabulary · 22/07/2021 17:44

I like both walls I actually think the floor is the issue. The colour doesn’t go and makes it all look weird

sskanky · 22/07/2021 17:48

Miles better in white

0DimSumMum0 · 22/07/2021 17:53

It looks so much better!!! Try the herringbone in white too.

BronwenFrideswide · 22/07/2021 17:56

Yes!!! The white grout on the white tiles looks 100% better and it really makes the feature wall stand out.

TilingTiles · 22/07/2021 18:17

That is above my paint skill level Grin

I think hugely better white. Stand firm. I think the floor is good, it will fade back when the whole is finished.

Viviennemary · 22/07/2021 21:00

Miles and miles better white tiles with white grout. I thing the herringbone ones look fine as they are. Get a fan installed. It will do a lot to solve the mouldy grout problem.

5zeds · 23/07/2021 09:21

I like the herringbone both ways. (Sorry not helpful I know) I think it will be “busier” with the white but lighter/brighter. Calmer but darker as a more single surface with the dark grout. It’s going to be beautiful.

CrystalMaisie · 24/07/2021 17:53

Perfect.
