Bathroom tiles done wrong. Opinions? *pics*

They've done my bathroom wrong, the feature herringbone wall looks as I hoped but the white tiles are supposed to have white grout. We have a separate en suite and WC that are half tiled, with the small metro tiles which have dark grout but I didn't want it on 3 fully tiled walls in my bathroom so went for larger tiles in here with white tiles.

My partner thinks it looks better this way and to leave it, I want to ask them to change it to what I asked for. Opinions?

White would be my preference too, but agree it looks good as it is, so wouldn’t change it now it’s done.

WhoDidAndWhy · 17/07/2021 09:09

I would prefer white but the feature wall is so fabulous that I think nothing else matters. Lovely.

erictheavocado · 17/07/2021 09:16

Sorry OP, I prefer white grouting as well. I agree with a pp that dark grout on white tiles looks like a tube station or the really old fashioned public toilets you used to get in London.

Onesundaymorning · 17/07/2021 09:22

I love the herringbone tiling and think the dark grout sits nicely against the colours in that. What a lovely bathroom!

Highlights12 · 17/07/2021 09:30

I've got white tiles and been looking at the state of my white grout lately and wishing I'd gone for grey grout. Yours looks lovely

Pbbananabagel · 17/07/2021 09:55

Actually I think the dark grout ties in the herringbone wall better than white grout. If you’d used white I think it would have cheapened the look of this finish overall.

Smokeymirror · 17/07/2021 09:57

I hate dark grout as I think it looks like a dirty public bathroom (but I think metro tiles look a it public bathroom anyway)

TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 10:08

Public bathroom definitely wasn't the look I was going for Sad The herringbone wall wasn't cheap so I don't want to ruin that by the rest of the room looking like a dirty metro station toilet Blush

I don't think the grout is the issue, it's the mismatch of the two tiles that's jarring. The herringbone are lovely and have a lux feel. The white ones are very minimalist and have a municipal swimming-pool feel. They might work in a monochrome palate but I think they don't work so well against the herringbone tiles you have. I think they're competing for airtime.

CrystalMaisie · 17/07/2021 10:13

I agree with you, white grout would have been much nicer. To me they look like they’re still waiting for the grout, all I see is the grid of grey lines which looks busy and not restful to the eye. White would have blended in. I agree grout around a bath or shower goes grotty, but not tiles that aren’t in contact with water and shampoo etc?
Love the grey tiles as they are.

TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 10:14

That's the second person that has called the herringbone tiles grey! They are meant to be blue Blush

I like the grout; also far easier to keep clean. The feature wall tiles look fantastic.

MotionActivatedDog · 17/07/2021 10:17

I don’t like it. White would look much better but I agree with everyone else that the white will go grey and discoloured- which is why I would never fully tile a bathroom. But it’s down now so I’d leave it.

Pleasegiveexamples · 17/07/2021 10:18

White grout and grey grout will both require the same level of cleaning to be clean. The grey just hides the dirt better so while it won’t look dirty- it still will be.
TilingTiles · 17/07/2021 10:19

Do the tiles not go then? Is that what's bugging me? I'm feeling a bit put out as I was so excited for this bathroom and something feels off.

We've got a indigo vanity unit being fitted on the wall opposite the herringbone. Which I'm worried won't match if the tiles look grey not bluey. And there's a mirror on that wall so the herringbone will be reflected which will distract from all the white.

I just pictured white grout so it looks wrong to be honest.

I think it looks amazing! Believe me (bitter experience) you don’t want white grout. I love the contrast of the white metro tiles with the herringbone. I think if you have some blue accessories to tie in with it it will look fantastic

30degreesandmeltinghere · 17/07/2021 10:21

Our kitchen is white tiles and black grout. Bathroom white on white. Kitchen always looks clean. Bathroom is grim...

SprayedWithDettol · 17/07/2021 10:22

I can’t agree. I prefer white grout. I have it and after 10 years is still clean. It just needs a twice weekly wipe over with a good bathroom cleaner.

That said, I wouldn’t redo it. The tiling looks very well done. I love the herring bone tiles.

FatJan · 17/07/2021 10:25

Mate, it looks good. The dark tone of the grout flows into the darker herringbone tiles and pulls it all together.

l2b2 · 17/07/2021 10:30

It looks great OP, your tiler has done you a favour.
As for the bath panel, personally I'd tile with the white tiles.

TeeBee · 17/07/2021 10:30

The herringbone tiles definitely look primarily blue. There's greys and silver in there too but primarily blue. They're beautiful tiles. I think the blue accessories you have will help balance it out. I'd err on the side of a lux finish though to balance the minimalism of the white tiles. What window dressing do you have?

HforHotel · 17/07/2021 10:31

I don't like the dark grout. It looks quite utilitarian. We've had white grout for years. It's never discoloured or gone mouldy. Just need to clean every week with a good bathroom spray

worktrip · 17/07/2021 10:34

I think white would have looked better as the dark grout makes the wall stand out more as a feature, which distracts from the actual feature wall and the floor having a different pattern doesn't work. With the blueish grey , blue, grey and dark unit is is a bit jumbled. However I do agree white grouting is a nightmare so it's 50/50.

October2020 · 17/07/2021 10:35

The issue is that the tiles don't match, not the grouting. They are two totally different styles.

But it's just a bathroom. In 6months you really won't care so long as it is usable and doesn't leak!

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2021 10:36

Another vote for white grout here. The tiles look odd in the photos to me, sorry OP.
