Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

I used to know a couple who had Troll Dolls dressed up as a bride and groom from their wedding that were proudly displayed in their sitting room. I think if a guest of mine has presented me with those things at my nuptials then their head would have been in the punchbowl PDQ!

@pinkpapaya, it’s called Boudoir Photography. I think the example I saw was a soft focus, black and white nude photo of the (female) householder.

Well, we've got a set of those vertical blinds left over from the 1980s so I'll start by nominating my own house for that

When we moved here , the front of the house had them. It was 12 years ago , we still have them !

Doilooklikeatourist · 25/06/2021 22:11

We were house hunting , one that immediately went on the don’t touch with a barge pole list , after a drive by had
This house
Is filled

Written in curly wire by the front door
🤢🤢🤢

AgentProvocateur · 25/06/2021 22:11

@Poorlykitten agreed. Hideous.

Housemum · 25/06/2021 22:11

Flame me now I put vertical blinds in the spare room!

We are gradually removing the fake beams and Artex, I will put in a navy kitchen so be doomed to be criticised on here as they are very much "of the moment".

My kids hung the macdonalds happy meal trolls by the neck along the garden fence. I also have an awful lot of the stuff listed here Grin

My parents taught me well.

Can imagine the photographer shouting 'Give it to me. Oh yes. Make love to the camera. You are really turning me on' with the subject replying 'Why thank you Serge' and 'Serge' replying ;No. Not you darling, your husband!'

Mirrored furniture
Crushed velvet furniture
Brightly coloured hand towels with matching bath mat (think plain white bathroom with bright purple towels to jazz it up)

Don’t mind a quote sign etc as long as it is original and not one of those “lets drink Prosecco and dance on the table” type signs

Fromwhenceshecame · 25/06/2021 22:15

Well this is bitchy.

Fingerprints all over it! What a bugger to keep polishing!

Also those signs that say “soak” in the bathroom and “cook” in the kitchen, like you need instruction on what to do in these rooms.

pinkpapaya · 25/06/2021 22:19

I also hate those 'elf on a shelf' things at Christmas

Moved 5 years ago downstairs bedrooms at front of house I didn't like them but everyone who comes to the front could peer into spare bedroom. Our bedroom the neighbours above us can see straight in so vertical blinds staying for now.

FierceBarrie · 25/06/2021 22:20

I didn’t realise gas barbecues were naff. They are standard issue here (not in the UK). - every home and every holiday home has one.

Or is it the size that makes it naff?

Not quite sure why that would prompt cries of ‘why, why, why?’ though… 🤔

LivingLaVidaCovid · 25/06/2021 22:21

Silk flowers and other such dust catchers

pinkpapaya · 25/06/2021 22:21

People who think owning a KitchenAid equates to being superior in every way

In the interest of balance because everyone who likes the above things (and they are popular) stays quiet -
Loads of dusty old books
Old wooden furniture
Abstract art
Clutter
Gardens full of plants and messy
Lots of colour
Pretentious wicker/marble/cast iron things and overpriced foody things. Etc

justasking111 · 25/06/2021 22:22

I also hate our bathroom, beige tiled walls, beige tiled floor, mock oak built-in cupboards and cabinets, white furniture, it's so dreary and naff in a cheap hotel way

The sheer size was enough to block out the sun and I doubt we will get a peaceful Sunday afternoon again all summer. We will be forced to suffer 'Jeff's' gourmet sausages and teriyaki BBQ multipacks along with his cheesy jokes ad infinitum. They had seemed like such nice, mild-mannered people before...

So far I’ve ticked off toilet brush, mugs and family photos although they in miss match frames totally unprofessional and embarrassing funny family ones and I ashamed off none Grin

What classed as cheap bookcase as might be to tick that off

pinkpapaya · 25/06/2021 22:26

I've got dusty old books! Yay! Score one for me!
