Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

@ThePluckOfTheCoward

My whole house would be considered naff. It was last modernised and decorated mid eighties, I've been here two years and haven't got round to doing anything to it yet. Woodchip wallpaper - painted magnolia, naturally ✔️, beige coloured bathroom suite ✔️, carpet in said bathroom ✔️, brick fireplace with horse brasses and brass coloured gas fire with fake coals ✔️, conservatory ✔️, dark wood dining room furniture ✔️, inherited hostess trolley ✔️. The only redeeming features are the naturally wild garden and no hot tub or barbecue. If the house was listed on Rightmove, I'm pretty sure someone would find it and post it on here for a good laugh. As this was my late parents' house I am perfectly comfortable in it's comforting familiarity. I am intending to modernise and redecorate when I can find some trades that are free post lockdown, In the meantime am I quite content in my naff-central house 😁.

Your house sounds awesome! I know exactly what you mean about the familiarising comforts of a fame home. I have inherited my family home with its coral bathroom suite, G Plan units, dark wood furniture, foam wallpaper and even the doorbell that plays different tunes like Greensleeves...I'm not changing anything anytime soon! I love retro anyway.

Have to laugh at the po-faced people on this thread...my house really is as naff as they come and I LOVE it! It just tells me it is all mine.

@LadyPoison

I see your Artex ceilings and raise you ....Artex walls!

I actually didn't realise until we moves in and by then it was too late. They are still up 20 years later as I have absolutely no idea what to do about them!

What type of paint have you painted your Artex? We found the Artex pattern doesn’t look as ‘obvious’ in matte. This is about an Artex ceiling with coving, might look ok on walls too.

@MaureenMLove

I'm currently sitting at my boyfriends house whilst he's out and I'm mentally looking at things that might get lost or broken, when we combine houses one day! BlushGrin

First to go missing, is the framed picture of Elvis... Grin

Sadly that never works, they ALWAYS ask after them. 36 years later there are things in the house that I dream will spontaneously combust without damaging anything else. Four Gilbert and Sullivan boxed set LPs for example.

Well this is bitchy.
And therein lies the charm.

Modern family portraits, the white background ones, printed on canvas. The naffest thing in the whole world.

Fivefourthreetwo · 26/08/2021 21:22

I stayed in a holiday cottage that had the word "LOVE" in wooden letters on the kitchen window ledge. I rearranged the letters to say "VOLE" and forgot to change it back before I left 😂

annacondom · 26/08/2021 21:38

Neighbour at my previous house had a conservatory put on. I always thought it was weird that you would want to sit in a glass box and be visible to everyone around. But my.new house has one and I love it! It isn't overlooked. Has a heater in it for winter. Can eat my breakfast/lunch there and look at the garden/read/listen to the radio and it's sunny and full of light. Have a sofa bed and even sleep in it sometimes - feels almost like being outside. It's my favourite part of the house.

What a nasty and despicable faux lighthearted thread just like being in a playground!! I bet all these ‘charmers’ wouldn’t dare to post a picture of their own homes and going by their attitudes they’re most likely to be as ugly as fuck 😂

In a few years time your trends will also be naff!

Well, given that the thread is a zombie from 2021, I’m sure that will have come to pass.

Orla Kiely print - curtains, cushions, whatever. I absolutely loathe the faux-70s naffness and ubiquity of it. Dreary, unimaginative choice.

Hardly dreary! Grey is dreary. Overused perhaps.

It’s so brown! Brown is dingy (to me), not to mention the strange choice of orange to go with!

“Cam22
Bifold doors leading from the garden to a kitchen/sitting room extension for everyone to frequent. (Already dated due to lockdown when people craved as many four walls as possible!)”

I am a bit confused as I thought everyone craved out door space exactly like this.

You could also put a canopy over and be able to see people there safely in all weather.

That poster means I have lots of small pokey rooms and I don't have a beautiful garden to enjoy.

Why does everyone keep talking about grey on this forum? Lots of colours are equally bad - the navy and other dark colours used endlessly in Victorian terrace houses are truly awful.

But at least they're a bit more interesting than grey!

Disclaimer - we painted the hall of our then victorian (detached) house grey back in the early '90s - dark, 'battleship' (as my dad called it!) grey below the dado rail and bright yellow above, with a print room effect, painstakingly cut out/applied by me. Both colours had to be mixed as nothing like that was readily available from the likes of dulux/crown back then.

I don't think they are. They're just as dull and boring as grey in my eyes.

Funny this thread should pop up again, I posted right at the start about my vertical blinds and that I was sticking with them because no alternative would work for those patio doors. Well I am pleased to report that a few weeks ago I finally found a better option with stick on blinds and the vertical blinds have gone to the tip https://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/stick-2-go/55354/stick2go-duolight-clotted-cream.html
