Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

@knobblykneesandturnedouttoes

Hot tubs
Second comment beat me to it! Unless you're swingers there's something very 70s about sharing a hot bubbly bath in full view of all your neighbours.

@HeronLanyon

In the interest of balance because everyone who likes the above things (and they are popular) stays quiet - Loads of dusty old books Old wooden furniture Abstract art Clutter Gardens full of plants and messy Lots of colour Pretentious wicker/marble/cast iron things and overpriced foody things. Etc
Stop stalking me

I hate vertical blinds as well, and we have some. They were left by the previous owners and we just haven’t got round to thinking what else could go there instead.

A friend of mine just installed an outdoor tv, so her toddler can now watch peppa pig in the garden. Not sure whether it counts as naff but I really pity the neighbours.

InThisMultiverse · 25/06/2021 22:29

Not so much in, but on. A house near me has a rather large square of fake ivy on the front of their house. You can see the netting behind the fake leaves.

Apart from the wicker/marble/cast iron things this describes my ideal home! (Although I'm struggling to imagine what you'd have in your garden other than plants).

Bitofachinwag · 25/06/2021 22:31

So mainly things that were trendy a few years ago?

Immaculatemisconception · 25/06/2021 22:32

A friend has a conservatory, which is naff but this one is so small it’s utterly pointless.

pollypersephone · 25/06/2021 22:32

Plastic grass. Fab idea. Let's wrap the planet in plastic. It's just so awful.

AntiWorkBrigade · 25/06/2021 22:32

@HeronLanyon - your list reminded me of when we sold our previous house, and the woman who ended up buying it made a nice comment about “all the lovely things you’ve bought on your travels”. I was quite chuffed at the time at the recognition of my superb taste. Well, those things never quite made it out of the garage in the new house and when I see them now I cringe at how it most of it was just souvenir tat. Having seen the photos from the house when it was resold reflecting her own taste, I can see that she was indeed just being kind!

tywysoges · 25/06/2021 22:32

@FindingMeno

Artificial flowers, lots of family photos on the walls, and every form of scent diffuser/ air freshener known to mankind every few paces.
Have you been to my house? Grin
StapMe · 25/06/2021 22:33

You know those patterned carpets you see in shops and think who on earth would buy them? Well the previous owners of any house I have ever lived in. Last lounge monstrosity (think swirly flowers pub type carpet) had to be lived with for a while, too skint to change it. On the plus side, nothing the kids could do to it could make it look any worse. Think food, paint, play doh etc. Nothing marked it permanently. My Dad pointed out that it probably was pub carpet; back in the day it would have hidden the fag burns too! Long gone now, thank goodness!

MaMelon · 25/06/2021 22:33

Hot tubs
Garden filled with tat - plastic windmills, gnomes, those metal things that spin in the wind, that kind of thing
Inspirational quotes
Crushed velvet sofas - esp if they have chrome legs
Grey everything - the odd bit of grey is fine but not the entire interior of the house
Marble
Those very stylised leather dining chairs
Overly tidy homes - ones that look like no-one lives there

@WeatherwaxLives

I have a pink bathroom suite....
Our spare room has an avocado basin that was here when we moved in mumblety years ago.

@pinkpapaya

I used to know a couple who had Troll Dolls dressed up as a bride and groom from their wedding that were proudly displayed in their sitting room. I think if a guest of mine has presented me with those things at my nuptials then their head would have been in the punchbowl PDQ!
I loved those Trolls. I think my sister had the bride and groom. I have loads of cabbage patch like in my bedroom. Grin

blisstwins · 25/06/2021 22:36

The nurse my Ex-husband got pregnant while married to me has quotes from the Bible all over their new house (he was atheist previously). They also have a large clock over the sofa with a stencil that says “there is always time for family.” He has not seen his kids in almost 2 years….lol.

Wallpapering · 25/06/2021 22:37

Brick wallpaper? does that incl that type that paintable and hides uneven surfaces

What colour should paint it? Obviously asking for a friend

Twiggy shit aka dead branches in a vase. I remember it was much hated on mumsnet a fair few years ago so I always have a little smile to myself when I spot it nowadays although it’s thankfully rare now.

starfishmummy · 25/06/2021 22:38

@Fromwhenceshecame

Well this is bitchy.
So????
Pellewsmate · 25/06/2021 22:38

My bathroom has:
Venetian blind
Turquoise bathroom suite
Pine panelling
Peach tiles
Black reflective glass instead of a mirror

I bumped into a preschool mum I hadn't seen for a few years and she said "Gosh, your bathroom was awful". The look on her face when I let her know that I still had the same bathroom was priceless.

This could be my flat 😂 pink walls, plants everywhere, abstract mural in my bedroom, mid century wooden furniture and clashing patterns/colours. I love it as much as I assume the live love laugh gang love their crushed velvet upholstered beds
