Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow

I don't have any of the things mentioned so no skin in the game but.....

You're being really mean.

Just ignore it.

I know you think it's 'lighthearted' but it comes across as just nasty.

Give over Hmm

I don't just have a toilet brush, I have a cherry shaped one in a large pure white bathroom with colourful towels and bathmat.

I have white furniture, feature walls and a large collection of "funny" signs, collected over many, many years. My garden has lots of plants, 5 plastic flamingoes and lots of solar lights. We have slides, a trampoline and a big old pool up.

I am proud to be so uncool and may need to throw an uncool party. You can sit on my copious collection of cushions, my massive beanbag and snuggle in front of my huge TV with a multitude of fluffy blankets.

Grin

I am shameful.

@saraclara

I used to think loads of family photos on display was a bit naff. But now I'm widowed and living alone, the kids are grown up and I have a grandchild, I have tons of them! Missing my family during lockdown led me to frame some favourites so instead of having three or four on display, I now probably have about ten! None of them are posed or artsy though. Just favourite snaps enlarged a bit.

Oh, and I have vertical blinds at my kitchen window.

Nominating myself for all the 'tat' (so says DH) that I've decorated the garden with. Including wire insects attached to one fence panel, festoon lights, solar fairy lights all up a tree... I love it.

Union Jack cushions

I really hate cheap 'arty' acrylic paintings bought from places like Camden Market of women reclining, David Bowie in Ziggy Stardust mode or Bob Marley with the outline of Africa in the background

Well sometimes family give you too many framed photographs what to do. I've run out of space in sitting room so the hall is filling up.

pinkpapaya · 25/06/2021 23:00

I did see a diamond encrusted loo seat when I lived in Saudi - it belonged to the 'so bad it's good' category

Overoptimistix · 25/06/2021 23:06

@Justkeepleft you need these! www.hillarys.co.uk/shutters-range/ we had vertical blinds when we moved in too.

LadyPoison · 25/06/2021 23:07

I see your Artex ceilings and raise you ....Artex walls!

I actually didn't realise until we moves in and by then it was too late. They are still up 20 years later as I have absolutely no idea what to do about them!

Mammyloveswine · 25/06/2021 23:08

I love a lighthearted thread but this just screams "judgement" and "nastiness"

Hoolihan · 25/06/2021 23:09

Agree with too much grey and photos blown up and printed on canvas.

Matching kettle and toaster in an 'accent colour', usually teal or red, probably with matching teatowls too. That fake panelling all the influencers are currently installing and will be ripping out in five years time. Masses and masses of houseplants all over the place - what are you trying to prove? Those neon signs of a single word or a song lyric. Blinds. Definitely hot tubs, so gross.

godmum56 · 25/06/2021 23:09

@EversoDelighted

Well, we've got a set of those vertical blinds left over from the 1980s so I'll start by nominating my own house for that.
me too but they keep the sun out
cakeandchampagne · 25/06/2021 23:10

One pair of plastic flamingos here. Smile

Shodan · 25/06/2021 23:10

Interiors that are achingly 'cool' - eg all white/grey interiors with uncomfortable chairs etc.

Feature walls, especially those that have violently patterned wallpaper.

But...
I'm in no position to judge. I'm fondly decorating a tree stump in my front garden with 'tasteful' ornaments- a colourful gnome, a stone toadstool that's twice the size of the gnome, a metal ladybird, a cutesie stone dragon and a raft of solar fairy lights. I call it my Ode To Naffness and I will defend it to the death. Grin

FortunesFave · 25/06/2021 23:11

Everyone has a gas bbq here in Oz. You spend so much time outside that it makes sense...why wouldn't you have something that made cooking outdoors easier? We eat and cook outside for about 6-8 months of the year after all.

But I can see why they're not quite sensible in the UK....

Personally I love 70s decor and this house was fully 70s when we moved in and still is....we have a full sized bar downstairs complete with orange and brass light fittings...we do backwards living here with bedrooms and sitting room plus kitchen and bathroom upstairs and down is the bar, laundry room and a spare room which we use as a gym/craft room.

I'd like to switch it all the right way round though...so I think our house is a bit naff for that reason! DH agrees but the cash isn't available at the moment!

Hoolihan · 25/06/2021 23:11

@ladypoison we had our horrendous artex walls skimmed over by a plasterer. It's made such a massive difference!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 25/06/2021 23:12

@Poorlykitten

These….
Was just coming on to say family rules painted on the wall, so that visitors can admire your bad taste amazing parenting.

Also "My kitchen is for dancing". Bollocks, it is.

pinkpapaya · 25/06/2021 23:12

Wrought Iron candle sticks that are really tall and spindly and especially with rounded curlicue ends. My mum has two on the floor and no matter how I try to avoid them, I ALWAYS knock the bloody things over!
