What would you do with this kitchen

The floor needs to stay as do the worktops. The turquoise cabinets look ok on a hot summer day in a Caribbean tropical kinda way. Less good on a cold November day. It’s very light & south facing (ish) yet has a cold feel. So needs warming up. We painted the walls white on moving in just to freshen it up but that adds to the coldness. Love to see your ideas.

I love the turquoise. I agree the white walls doesn't help. It needs some colour on the walls and I would change the stools. Will have a think.

tilder · 07/11/2020 13:00

Looking on Pinterest, colours that look good are gold, copper, dark woods and surprisingly an orangey red.

I think it needs some warmth. Lovely colours, but they're all a bit cold. Could be as simple as paint. Or maybe cupboard handles, stools, taps and lights. Possibly tiles. Or fabric. A lot of beautiful doors and windows, maybe blinds or similar.

I would be interested to know as I would love a turquoise kitchen, but our room is quite dark so colours need to be warm.

Thanks tilder I was thinking of painting walls and cabinetry. There’s 6 window/doors hence it being so light. They’re wooden so can also be painted. I don’t like curtains or blinds but would consider pelmet type things. But not sure about colours. The cabinets are quite chipped so need painting anyway. I’ve no idea what paint they owners used. Not sure I want to keep the turquoise despite me getting used to it. I don’t walk into this room and think ‘ooh’. Albeit I do in summer.

I find the not quite black slate floor the trickiest aspect. There’s hardly any blackish skate floor kitchen on Pinterest or Houzz.

Didn't realise you were looking to paint the cabinets too. They are a light turquoise, which is quite cold.

I see what you mean about the floor. Limits your colour choices a bit. On Pinterest, dark floors are all paired with light coloured cabinets. White, off white and light grey. All a bit cold especially with the work tops.

Are you a classic colour person (greys etc) or bold colour? I would probably paint the cabinets red if they were mine!

another one saying red...but a lovely warm brick red

Not sure about the kitchen cupboards, but I would paint the walls Farrow & Ball pink ground. That would look stunning with that floor and make a huge difference to the feel of the room.

With the cupboards, I think the difficulty is that you can’t go too dark, as you need a bit of contrast with the floor, or too light, as having some contrast with the worktop would look better. I guess that means you need more of a mid-range colour, may be some kind of green?

Nonamesavail · 07/11/2020 14:15

The stools look uninviting.

Youandmealwaysandforever · 07/11/2020 14:15

I love it, wish I could swap Grin

Seatime · 07/11/2020 14:20

Terracotta cupboards, rattan chairs, maybe yellow walls?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/11/2020 14:23

It's a lovely size & I LOVE the sky lights!! (I have one in my bathroom. It was a pain in the arse to get done & expensive, but 5 years on it still makes me smile every day!!)

Do you have the space to put a sofa in there?

I'd paint the cupboards, personally I don't like that colour at all (except on the odd very sunny day) with cocktails!! A stone or soft sage. Whatever you like & goes with the floor.

I'd change the hanging lights - something black metal or steel (are you keeping the bar stools? If you are tie in with them)

Put in a couple of radiators.

Keep the walls white & bright.

We will need photos when you've finished!!

Takethewinefromtheswine · 07/11/2020 14:25

I think the colour looks fine. I think, for me, the issue is that the stuff in the room does not compliment the room. The light fittings are small and being glass make no visual impact. Everything else is waist height down, so there is nothing to add interest at eye level or higher and no colour anywhere else. I think it would benefit from for eg. a bit of colour on the walls (although it's a big room, so not sure what colours would be best), some art work, a big vase of tall flowers on the island and some really great light fittings that draw the eye to a different level.

silkpashmina · 07/11/2020 14:30

I think I would paint the Island and base cabinets in a dark navy and the full height section and upper cabinets in a stone colour. The size of the kitchen and the light could easily take a darker colour on base units. Agree with PP about changing lights to match chairs. Pelmets would also take coldness away if you don't like blinds.

Mistymonday · 07/11/2020 14:38

I love it! Maybe add some old oak/pine wooden things to warm it up a bit if that is bothering you? I really love the turquoise!

FrustratoPotato · 07/11/2020 14:41

It definitely needs warming up but it's a lovely kitchen. New light fixtures, something warm and bold, brass or copper? Paint the island so it grounds itself in the kitchen. A taupe or stone colour would look nice. I'd paint the walls something like f&b elephants breath or dulux warm truffle. Change the bar chairs to something with upholstery. Add pelmets or curtains to dining room and maybe a sofa with cushions that pick up the turquoise. Mustard or ochre accents would look nice.

SpongeWorthy · 07/11/2020 14:41

I would go for a slightly more muted tone on the cupboards maybe blue / navy? Agree copper detailing would look lovely with the flooring, which is gorgeous.

Lovely kitchen. I would definitely go off white cabinets, and accessories in wood and copper to warm it all up. You could then do almost any wall colour you like really - light and neutral or dark and moody. Houzz is a great source for ideas - look under the kitchen section and search "slate floor white counters" and lots of pictures come up.

cleanasawhistle · 07/11/2020 14:51

I think I would leave it as it is but add some roman blinds and some new stools

Alfaxan · 07/11/2020 14:51

Sorry, not sure how to do clicky links!

whoareyouIwonder · 07/11/2020 14:55

Some lovely coloured stools.

Your current ones looking intimidating

Kitsmummy · 07/11/2020 15:05

We have dark floors and white walls/worktops. We used Little Green Portland Stone which looks lovely with it I think. Here is the kitchen, not quite finished but you’ll get an idea

Ps I agree with the others...the stools are too dark.

JackHam · 07/11/2020 15:06

I would use Frenchic paint to paint the cabinets. It's amazing stuff and will transform your kitchen.

Twistiesandshout · 07/11/2020 15:15

It needs softening I think, mainly because of the floor which doesn't really work with the kitchen units. Easy fix - I would change the lights and the stools. I'd do natural wood lights and Hamptons style wooden bar stools with either woven backs or a soft fabric print . I'd also do a large rug at the dining end. Google "tropical chic".

Challenging fix - I would do all the above but paint the units in a blue similar to Sponge above.

Twistiesandshout · 07/11/2020 15:18

aghhh ignore tropical chic google, search it on Pinterest with regards to lights/stools .
