What would you do with this kitchen

The floor needs to stay as do the worktops. The turquoise cabinets look ok on a hot summer day in a Caribbean tropical kinda way. Less good on a cold November day. It’s very light & south facing (ish) yet has a cold feel. So needs warming up. We painted the walls white on moving in just to freshen it up but that adds to the coldness. Love to see your ideas.

OP as others have said you have a fab kitchen but to me it looks, and “feels” cold. I can almost hear that it will have bad acoustics; is it noisy, echoey when you move a chair? Our last kitchen was a bit like that, and to me it felt “cold” but it was a noise/ atmosphere thing. Hope this makes sense! Anyway, adding rugs, curtains and cushions made such a huge difference. Texture really adds warmth to a room (and helps with acoustics) and at the moment everything in your room is hard and shiny. I think that’s why your kitchen stools are getting the thumbs down.

I personally wouldn’t change your floor - we have a real slate floor and slate splash back and our kitchen isn’t the least bit cold looking. But it’s in warmer tones/ colours than yours.

I would change your stools though, and add texture and fabrics. Have fun.

Please don't paint your kitchen units with Frenchic. You will ruin them and regret it.

laudemio · 11/11/2020 16:25

I'd have good mooch around the devol website for colour and styling ideas op. I'd also consider getting a colour consultancy appointment with f&b or little greene.

explorerdog · 11/11/2020 16:30

I've seen some really nice wooden cabinets in a warm navy colour. I'd only paint the base ones dark though.
Maybe a contrasting colour for higher up ones.
Wooden blinds will warm the room up, as will some brightly coloured soft furnishings

waitrosetrollydolly · 11/11/2020 16:44

Keep walls white and use charlestone gray for the cabinets with black taps and handles .

7Days · 11/11/2020 17:10

I love the floor

A soft sagey green on the cabinets, would be my advice, with dark wood stools, big bold lights over the island.

Then bring those elements over to the dining room, even if in just a big painting or table wear or some sort of window dressing, or even a feature wall. A softer white all over the walls.
Then

averythinline · 11/11/2020 17:29

I love the floor... and think I would embrace dark/bold love the idea of incardine Island or even brinjal and possibly a cream like Dorset ? Think rich and opulent
For warmth rather than a taupe they often look peachy in bright sun.

..or the more classic sage definitely warmer...turquoise is quite harsh ..

Little Green also have good colour's..

bravotango · 11/11/2020 17:31

Pale but warmer cabinets. Sage green? I think some brass handles etc and some rattan/brown leather stools would make a big difference

lowbudgetnigella · 11/11/2020 17:41

I warmed up my kitchen recently keeping slate floor, we went for new doors in cashmere colour and Dulux copper blush paint on some walls, white on others. Also massive string of cable and cotton lights which look so cosy

I would say the floor and dark accessories (like the stools) make it look cold . It's a lovely kitchen though

Onamugsearch · 11/11/2020 17:59

I haven’t rtft but:

If keeping the cupboards that colour I’d look at painting the walls Myland Empire Grey, I’d change the stools to a paler colour - oak possibly or go really bright with bright orange velvet > or something like this >.

Also if change the ironmongery to copper or bronze to warm it up a bit :).

And top tip - don’t paint yourself get someone else to do cabinets.....

Onamugsearch · 11/11/2020 18:00

And I need to relearn how to do links 🤦‍♀️

NotDonna · 11/11/2020 22:36

And read the thread? 🤣 But thank you! I’m very keen to paint the cabinets.

Railings satin units, very dull brass knobs, setting plaster walls, teak midcentury stools (maybe kandya originals?) and slightly oversized pearl globes for lights - not the absolute height of fashion but strong and liveable (and cheap!)

Also a couple of abstract/midcentury paintings and a couple of 'good' 20th century antiques to make it a bit less catalogue/matchy.

VitreousHumour · 12/11/2020 12:19

Also, if you're keen to keep the walls pale, white is a lot less clinical with lots of vintage or vintage-style wood elements eg table, stools, chairs.

Onamugsearch · 12/11/2020 14:45

@NotDonna fair enough, I did open with it although related to everyone else’s posts rather than yours so wasn’t sure if the colours had been suggested!

If you want a different colour I’d go with someone else painting it for you, it’s a very visual part of your kitchen.

Also if you are going far darker make sure you have a pot on standby as the everyday chips and knocks will be far more noticeable than on the current colour, red will show the dings more than sage green.

Farrow and Ball are great but if you are going to paint over them yourself, try other high quality samples first, Myland paint has been easier to paint on wood than the equivalent F&B has in our experience and we’ve repainted wooden cabinets, skirting and bannister in the last year.

Gosh, there must be a lot of Mumsnetters with fabulous kitchens. I think it looks great as it is.

trickyex · 13/11/2020 08:44

I would paint the units a rich dark green and change the handles. I also think the light fittings are undersized.

Its a great room, just a few changes will make a massive difference.

Bowerbird5 · 13/11/2020 09:33

Please post some photos when you have finished it. I would love to see it.

beachysandy81 · 13/11/2020 10:05

Love your kitchen. Probably would have done a wood/wood effect floor to create light and warmth but tiles are good quality and tasteful so not worth replacing. Maybe put in wood stools to match other wood furniture and some nice fabric blinds on windows to add a bit of colour.

Units are a nice colour, so I would accessorise (blinds (roman or roller so that a bit of the fabric is always showing at the top), cushions, table cloths, vases) with navy, sage, blush pink (or coral if you want bright) and cream colours I think if you decide to keep current unit colour. I would also try and find space for a small sofa or chair with a colour fabric - maybe at the end where you have the wood furniture?

If you decide to change the units don't paint them yourself, get a professional in - I think sage green or a colour like F&B Lamp Room Grey (grey but looks a bit sagey) are good colours.

beachysandy81 · 13/11/2020 10:07

By the way I think floor is too dark for dark coloured units.

trickyex · 13/11/2020 10:10

Having looked again sorry but I agree about the stools and chairs, I would change these to wooden or upholstered versions for softness and comfort. Sell yours on ebay?
Roman blinds/soft seating, some warm metals such as brass or copper and more wood will all make a difference if you prefer not to change the units.
Wooden fruit bowl/chopping boards/bar stools/plants and some art work will add warmth and spirit.

F&b eggshell is really good paint but unless your a good neat painter would suggest getting someone else to do it! Also second a touch up pot...we hardly used ours but they have discontinued our colour...
