Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

I haven't changed my holiday wardrobe for years. My husband laughs at our photos because we are always wearing the same clothes year after year.

iceteababy · 06/03/2026 13:12

I had absolutely no idea that this was a thing that anyone did.

Makingsenseofitall · 06/03/2026 13:13

Is that a thing? Does anyone really do this ?

Obsession with consumption, fashion, clout and image is fucking this planet in its arse.

Buying stuff to wear a couple of times because you like the feel of new clothing on holiday is unconscionable.

Giving it to charity shops afterwards does zero for the planet so don't let that make you feel slightly better about your choices.

Absolutely this. I’m so sick of it all.

Moltenpink · 06/03/2026 13:14

No OP, no we do not do this. Are you mad or just very rich?

Saracen · 06/03/2026 13:14

It never occurred to me to buy new things for a holiday, unless say my swimming costume was actually worn out.

To me, the holiday is treat enough. I don't need new clothes also.

TBH if I did see clothes as a treat (I don't particularly) then I would be more likely to buy new clothes to cheer myself up when I WASN'T going on holiday!

I do for quite a few things but when your kids like to wear the same things it's not easy to find multiple sizes. Plus there's loads of things I've bought where it's arrived and been awful and needed returning.

Even when you do find things suitable it still adds up. For a weeks holiday you need 7 evening outfits, plus multiple day time items, multiple swimsuits (which I'd never want to buy second hand anyway). Buying all this even on Vinted would indeed cost hundreds

No you don’t - one swinsuit gets rinsed out

you might have one smart outfit for a child - something easily rubbed clean if they spill their dinner

ERthree · 06/03/2026 13:15

I go away up to 12 times a year so no i don't buy new every time. Most of my beachwear is at least 5 years old and in fact one cover up is 17 years old this year. I come home from holiday, wash everything and repack ready to go for next time.

MmeWorthington · 06/03/2026 13:16

Nope!

Waste of money, waste of planet resources.

I don’t see spending on ‘stuff’ as fun in itself. I replace items that are worn out, have been badly outstripped by fashion or no longer fit, l and will of course enjoy nice new replacements or additions where needed .

But do not buy new outfits for the sake of it

OhDear111 · 06/03/2026 13:17

Take precious but refresh a few things.

CanISeeYourLicence · 06/03/2026 13:17

I am usually saving hard for the holiday so don't have alot of give left in my budget. But I will buy essentials like new pool sliders for the Dcs as their feet have usually grown. I prefer to buy beach towels when there so we don't have to take them in our suitcase.... although we usually bring them back with us so that doesn't make any sense objectively!

cramptramp · 06/03/2026 13:17

I’ve had some of the same holiday outfits for many years. I only wear them on holiday so they last a long time. If I need anything new I’ll buy it but it’s not that often.

Andepeda · 06/03/2026 13:17

I have no idea if an item is comfortable until I've worn it, so I don't waste luggage space on anything brand new. Trying on isn't a good enough test imo.

DoAWheelie · 06/03/2026 13:19

I don't think I've ever bought new clothes for a holiday unless it's buying something I'll need that I just hadn't bothered replacing before (i.e a new swimming costume or walking boots).

I prefer to wear my normal stuff as I know how to pair items together to make sure I'm the correct temperature - I struggle a lot with feeling too warm as it makes me get very dizzy and sick so I'd rather not find out a new top is thicker than I thought in the middle of a strange place without my usual options to swap to.

AnnaQuayRules · 06/03/2026 13:20

PollyBell · 06/03/2026 12:07

No it would be a waste and terrible for environment

This. I can't believe people buy a whole new wardrobe just for holidays

Crushed23 · 06/03/2026 13:20

I go away several times a year and just wear the same things as the year before - ski clothes for skiing, hiking clothes for hiking, summer clothes for warm holidays etc.

I tend to do more clothes shopping ON holiday as I have more time, I’m more relaxed, and can go on a Tuesday morning while it’s quiet rather than at the weekend.

Theonebutnotonly · 06/03/2026 13:20

No. I might buy one or two new items each, to be a bit special, but otherwise I wear clothes I’ve already got. TBH I think it’s ridiculous to spend a lot of money on things you don’t need.

DappledThings · 06/03/2026 13:22

Mad. I had no idea anyone did this. I can't get my head round even having a holiday specific wardrobe let alone replacing it every year.

We all just wear the same clothes on holiday as at home and year round. Winter is basically the same clothes plus jumpers. Summer is a few pairs of shorts extra and maybe one pair of lightweight trousers.

MmeWorthington · 06/03/2026 13:22

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/03/2026 12:08

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

Same here!

With 7 children and the baby it makes the journey back so much easier.

We ditch the new ‘holiday pram’ too. And who wants to lug a Dyson Air Wrap home? No one.

Pollyanna87 · 06/03/2026 12:45

I don’t mean this in a bitchy way, but I think that people who buy new for every holiday surely aren’t already in possession of nice, good quality clothes, so they just carry on buying cheap stuff that doesn’t look good.

I don’t mean this in a bitchy way

Hate to break it to you, but you definitely do

Iloveluna · 06/03/2026 13:24

I come from a pretty affluent background and have never ever heard of anyone doing such a bizarre and wasteful thing. Sure, one or two nice new things, but a whole new wardrobe, for a week? Frankly, it’s disgusting

largeprintagathachristie · 06/03/2026 13:25

Have you got this (completely bonkers annd wasteful) idea from instagram?

Unpaidviewer · 06/03/2026 13:25

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 12:32

Most will be Next for the children and JD, myself mainly Next, Never Fully Dressed, M&S etc

This is the problem, you buy fast fashion that isn't built to last. Buy to wear a few times, dump at the charity shop and most ends up in landfill. For the amount you're spending you could get a few really nice pieces that fit well and aren't sweaty, cheap looking, man made fibres.

Not gonna lie to you but I don't think you hate it.

PurpleThistle7 · 06/03/2026 13:25

I like to bring the stuff the kids are about to outgrow in case we want to buy anything while we are there so I guess I do exactly the opposite!
