Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

I do, plus I get new for my kids, outfits for day and night plus swim wear etc 🫣

I dont tend to treat myself to much throughout the year, so suppose it all evens itself out

Why not reuse some holiday clothes and spend some of the savings on buying something nice for other seasons then?

Denim4ever · 06/03/2026 12:33

No, except if children have gone up a size in something used only on hols. Wetsuit is the only thing springing to mind.

I do have a couple of tops that I mostly only wear on holiday. But they are old items
that perform a specific function. Long t that makes jammers look like shorts etc.

RedVanYellowVan · 06/03/2026 12:33

We have never had the sort of holiday where we have needed to dress up. Camping, water sports, hill walking etc. Normal clothes for evenings etc.

So old clothes which don't matter if they get ruined, but everyone has safety gear in good condition, updated as necessary.

The DC might have had the occasional new t-shirt or hoody, most likely a souvenir one.

We are in the minority here 🤣 enjoy it!!

If only I could afford it! But also, how wasteful? What's the worst that could happen if you wear an outfit you've worn before? How odd.

I don't buy anything new. I buy good quality clothes that last years. Where are you buying all this stuff and how are you storing it all?

Most will be Next for the children and JD, myself mainly Next, Never Fully Dressed, M&S etc

No, we go away 2-3 times a year. I’d have so much stuff if I did that and it’s genuinely unnecessary.

clarrylove · 06/03/2026 12:35

No. Of course not. What a terrible waste.

fantom · 06/03/2026 12:36

Can't believe people buy everything new for a holiday! it would never occur to me. I buy things I really like and wear them lots. Summer stuff goes in a suitcase over Winter and vice versa. I like getting it all out and it feels new again.

Jk987 · 06/03/2026 12:37

Yes, it’s part of the fun! Some things I re-wear for years but I always like to buy a dress, a few new tops and maybe a pair of sandals.

Poppins2016 · 06/03/2026 12:38

I've had my swimming costume for about 5 years, although I'll be buying a new one soon because it needs to be replaced. I've had my bikinis for 10 years (I don't wear then very often).

I buy clothes if/when something needs replacing, or if I find something I love and know I'll get use out of it.

Same goes for my children - things are replaced when they are worn out or too small. My children (especially my eldest) will inevitably get new things over the summer because they're needed, but I would never buy specifically for a holiday.

Peonies12 · 06/03/2026 12:39

Of course not, that's terrible for the environment. I might get a couple of dresses off Vinted, and maybe new sandals or swimwear but that would be for the whole summer not just that holiday. Those companies you buy from are terrible environmentally and in terms of workers rights in their factories.

This I can understand. One or two new bits that are either needed, or that are nice, as a treat to mark the holiday.
But not a whole new wardrobe. That just seems extravegant and wasteful. Even if it goes to the charity shop. We should all be trying to buy less.

GretaGip · 06/03/2026 12:41

Obsession with consumption, fashion, clout and image is fucking this planet in its arse.

Buying stuff to wear a couple of times because you like the feel of new clothing on holiday is unconscionable.

Giving it to charity shops afterwards does zero for the planet so don't let that make you feel slightly better about your choices.

goz · 06/03/2026 12:43

I will say I definitely have ended up buying a lot of new things for the last several holidays, that’s largely because my holiday wardrobe was quiet different when I was in my 20s and going on boozy friend holidays vs now with 2 kids in my 30s. Then one summer I was pregnant, another I was PP and BFing so I needed different things for a few years in a row.
Now I would say I’ve largely settled and I would maybe buy a new bikini and an outfit or two for a holiday but I have nice things I already own and I look forward to taking.

Meadowfinch · 06/03/2026 12:44

No, I don't have that sort of money to waste.

Last year was our first foreign holiday in ages so I bought two pairs of linen trousers, a bikini and a sun dress. Some new t-shirts and a pair of wet shoes for swimming off stony beaches for ds.

This year, I'll add another sundress, a new top or two, some sandals, a sun hat and a beach bag for me. Ds needs some new shorts and another t-shirt or two.

If I mix things with ordinary shorts and tops from home, I'll have something suitable for most days.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/03/2026 12:45

No not really. I might buy some beach or sun dresses or sarongs when there though. When I was younger I bought holiday outfits but reused them. Same with airport I’ve bought bikinis and shoes there.

Pollyanna87 · 06/03/2026 12:45

I don’t mean this in a bitchy way, but I think that people who buy new for every holiday surely aren’t already in possession of nice, good quality clothes, so they just carry on buying cheap stuff that doesn’t look good.

FieryA · 06/03/2026 12:47

Sometimes, I save new clothes that I buy during the year for holidays. Apart from that it is a mix of old and new clothes. I always only take worn, comfortable footwear.

Wexone · 06/03/2026 12:48

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/03/2026 12:08

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

Oh sweet lord 😲such a waste or money so much damage for the environment as well as teaching your children the wring message that everything is disposable and you don't need to look after anything
Plus leaving your mess to be cleaned up after you leave

ThiagoJones · 06/03/2026 12:49

mrbluebirdonmyshoulder · 06/03/2026 12:02

i buy everything new for everybody. I love the idea of the clothes being brand new for the holiday.

Every holiday?

itsthetea · 06/03/2026 12:50

I suspect @RobinEllacotStrikewas being facetious

PheasantandAstronomers · 06/03/2026 12:50

What a weird idea.

Shuffletoesxtreme · 06/03/2026 12:52

Say at £50 an outfit that's £200 per day for a family of four so £1400 for a week? Get another holiday for that.
