Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

No you don’t - one swinsuit gets rinsed out

you might have one smart outfit for a child - something easily rubbed clean if they spill their dinner

One single swimsuit for a 7 day beach holiday and one evening outfit for a child is at the total other end of the spectrum though!
Why would you want to wear the same pair of knickers for 7 days?!

DuchessofStaffordshire · 06/03/2026 13:26

Good lord. I've heard it all now. I'd rather invest in a few nice items that I know will last for many years. My priorities whilst on holiday tend to revolve around exploring new cultures, history and food etc rather than obsessing over a whole new wardrobe of clothes.

WhatAPavalova · 06/03/2026 13:29

I don’t buy it for the sake of it but every year I find everyone needs something.

Often my 2 boys have only sport shorts and I get some “nice” shorts as wouldn’t normally have got them here with UK weather. Or sundresses or hats. I would probably get myself at least 1 item clothing.

I have a friend who buys children and herself a couple of outfits in addition for each holiday. She always has lovely holiday photos of coordinating family! I couldn’t be bothered myself.

glitterpaperchain · 06/03/2026 13:30

I have never heard of doing this, that sounds so wasteful

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/03/2026 13:30

As a child I was the only one who got new clothes because I was the eldest of 3 girls. My sisters got my hand me downs.

Blimey didnt think a post would cause such a stir. 🤣 I personally do like to buy new too. Tend to go away abroad every other year so obviously the children do need new. Myself I like to buy new as previous stuff id of donated to charity including the childrens outgrown items, so not really that wasteful. I cant stand having to store stuff

What an odd post! I’m the opposite to you. I keep my nice outfits for when I’m not on holiday as the ones I wear on holiday get damaged by sunscreen and I prefer to wear my clothes for longer than a week or two. Sustainability and all that.

TallulahBetty · 06/03/2026 13:32

Of course not. Are you always this wasteful?

Twooclockrock · 06/03/2026 13:32

If we are missing some bits at the right size then yes. But generally no.
I will buy new summer clothes for the kids anyway as they grow so will use those.
For me, it depends if I need anything based on the holiday and what we are doing..but no I wont buy a whole new wardrobe of clothes to wear for a week.

But why waste your time with culture when you could be dressing up in all new outfits??

BitOutOfPractice · 06/03/2026 13:35

Now I go on a lot of holidays. I love clothes. I have a lot of them. Packing to go on holiday is one of greatest pleasures. I am most definitely not in the “rinse one cozzie” out camp.

But even I think this is utterly ludicrous. Absolutely bonkers. And so wasteful.

most of my clothes are many years old. Some are decades old.

Are you changing your mind after reading this op?

M103 · 06/03/2026 13:35

It never occurred to me that anyone would do this!

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/03/2026 13:36

Of course not, I just take my existing clothes that are approaprote for the type of holiday. I have a very few items that may be worn mostly on holiday - I have a glorious floaty green kaftan style dress from &Stories that rarely gets worn in the UK as it is hardly ever hot enough.

But I don't buy special new holiday clothes, that is just strange.

Octavia64 · 06/03/2026 13:36

Dear god no.

i hate clothes shopping at the best of times.

auserna · 06/03/2026 13:37

No, far too wasteful. Just like buying new Christmas pyjamas and bedding, or washing everything after one wear.

Orangejuiceisgood · 06/03/2026 13:37

What on earth are holidays clothes? Do people have clothes for holiday only?

So separate shorts/swim costumes etc for home and abroad. The only ‘holiday clothes’ I have are ones suitable for snow. But I would wear those in the UK if I needed them.

StephensLass1977 · 06/03/2026 13:38

No, I'm not a millionaire. Even if I was, I wouldn't want to waste money on new things every time.

I lost 2 or 3 stone in 2024, so I did buy some new holiday stuff but this was out of necessity.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/03/2026 13:39

Actually thinking about it I did buy a Uniqlo knitted jacket to take to New York a couple of springs ago as I wanted something warm but smart to wear with jeans and over dresses. But it has become a wardrobe staple afterwards.

TheSandgroper · 06/03/2026 13:40

Tell me you live in a different tax bracket without telling me that you live in a different tax bracket.

Bunnycat101 · 06/03/2026 13:42

Sounds bonkers to me. I really don’t get why you’d need a whole new wardrobe for each holiday. Surely there would be bits from a summer wardrobe (assuming this is a summer holiday) that you’d want to wear and like. I could see wanting the odd new item or swimwear but buying all new just seems wasteful.

Personally I would be never be able to wear 90% of my summer holiday clothes in the UK. Not sure why people are being obtuse about this aspect. The average summer temp where I am is about 18 degrees with cool mornings and evenings, that’s very very different from 30+ weather for a week.

Why do you need to be in an old outfit to enjoy the culture of another country?
The point you’re making isn’t logical.

Terfedout · 06/03/2026 13:46

What an appalling waste. Not to mention the total lack of respect for the environment.

Forthesteps · 06/03/2026 13:48

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/03/2026 12:08

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

Are you serious? God I really hope you don't actually put stuff in the bin if so as that's actually immoral.

If you read both posts you should be able to grasp the sarcasm.

I bloody hope so, but you never know on here.

I would go a stage further and leave the children behind at the end of the holiday and just get new kids the following year. It’s fun to try different hair colours and names, etc.
