Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Has she accepted that though?!

I allow mine to buy whatever they heck they want with their pocket money. They’ll learn soon enough. Just as we did

I’m not the poster you asked but I have a teen who is very anti fast fashion. Her dream is to be a marine biologist. She wouldn’t dream of buying anything from Shein or Temu or similar. Kids like that do exist!

That worked with DD1 but not so much with DD2.
she is ND and as soon as £ lands in her account apple will take it for forgotten subscrptions/subs after free trails she hasn't cancelled, or she would have spent it on Shein, plus we had a vaping issue so I cut of ££.

So I intervened. She can still spend her pocket money but its either cash or via me (as someone so kindly pointed out upthread I'm an enthusiastic budgeter so it is super easy for me to track DD2's allowance within my own finances)

Now she simply has a Shein "basket" at all times, but no purchases.

She might get a PT job this summer so things will change again if she is earning her own ££ - but there is nothing I will be able to do about that. Hopefully she will learn.

Funny enough I do find when teens start to earn their own ££ their spending habits change somewhat.

exactly - she know if she wants to spend £ on vapes or Shein she needs to be earning her own £ as I will NOT be funding it.

Of course not.

Wild.

Sofado · 09/03/2026 18:53

I’ve never ever heard of anyone buying all new stuff for holidays. I’m quite shocked.

EvieBB · 09/03/2026 19:29

cottoncandy260 · 08/03/2026 22:55

What?? Oh my word, I had no idea this was a thing. And then…? Do you allow yourself to continue wearing them after your holiday? What happens if there’s a really lovely dress you like? Will you never take that on holiday again because it’s not new anymore?

Where’s this bizarre trend come from? Some superficial-as-shit influencer? Absolute nuts!

Depressing isn't it? I never knew it was a thing until my SIL did it 30 yrs ago for her and their 4 DCs....I was like, what?!!! My DH is a doctor but she knows how to spend his cash that's for sure 😱

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

Surely your taking the piss?

Mrscharlieeeee · 09/03/2026 21:59

Usually yes but we’re a once a year holiday type of family, the kids will have outgrown everything from the previous year so new stuff it is! I have some swimwear that I’ve had for years and reuse a few sundresses but we always get some new bits.

LittleEmily · 10/03/2026 01:46

I prefer to take previous outfits away because i enjoy process of the trip.

Summerbay23 · 10/03/2026 06:55

Abra1t · 06/03/2026 12:05

WHy waste buying new clothes if you have the previous years' clothes and they're still in good condition and you still like them? I might refresh with things I actually need or have fallen in love with.

This. No way could I afford to buy new all the time, plus I hate shopping and already have my staple items (linen trousers, cropped trousers, summer dresses etc).

She is (thank God)..... apparently its a joke lol

Ohjose · 10/03/2026 17:36

No but I shop constantly (secondhand) and always have new (to me) things coming into my wardrobe and back out either on Vinted or to the charity shop. So each trip, invariably I have “new” clothes! Then I do have staple summer pieces such as linen shirts etc that I wear year after year.

This has to be a 🤣 joke!?!

it's like another cancel the cheque.

Yes RobinEllacotStrike's post was a joke, she has also confirmed it herself on this thread.

That’s fine but some of us can afford it

HeidiLite · 11/03/2026 12:13

I would need to buy also a bigger house to fit all those clothes if we bought all new for everyone before each holiday. Or do you just take all clothes straight to charity shop after the holiday, having worn them once?

And some of us can afford it but would never do it.

It's not necessarily about being able to afford it.

DelphiniumBlue · 11/03/2026 16:00

No, I wouldn’t dream of it! I wouldn’t have been able to afford to do that and go on holiday !
I would have checked that everyone had sufficient suitable clothes, eg swimwear, shorts, etc, and maybe the eldest might have got some ‘ new’ ( secondhand) clothes if he’d grown out of his old ones, but the younger 2 would have had a good supply of hand-me-downs.
As for me and DH, he’s just getting his summer gear out of storage, some of it is more than 10 years old. I will see what size I am by the time we go on holiday, and might buy something new, but DC are all adult ( none of them are interested in clothes) and they sort out their own wardrobes now. They might buy linen shirts and a pair of shorts if they go somewhere hot, but mainly they are in jeans and T-shirts.
I personally would pack 2 or 3 costumes for a beach holiday, and one or 2 coverups, would probably choose long linen shirts. I might take 3 dresses for a weeks holiday, plus shorts or a skirt, vests or T-shirts, a loose blouse and a couple of shirts, plus a lightweight jacket and a big scarf to use as a sarong and wear as an extra layer on the plane. But I only do carry on luggage if it’s to a hot place and I don’t need to bring boots or jumpers.

well done but not relevant to what I was responding too

Well done

And your post wasn’t particularly relevant to anything either (they were talking about their finances and their reasons for not doing it, not yours) so I guess we’re even.
