Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Blimey didnt think a post would cause such a stir. 🤣 I personally do like to buy new too. Tend to go away abroad every other year so obviously the children do need new. Myself I like to buy new as previous stuff id of donated to charity including the childrens outgrown items, so not really that wasteful. I cant stand having to store stuff

No, I don't get enough wear out of it to replace it every time I go away

blueskyview · 06/03/2026 12:15

Wow I’ve never heard of this as a concept! In general I only buy clothes if I really love them so it would be weird to go on holiday and not be able to take my favourite summer dresses for example! Plus all the hassle and money of extra shopping. Summer clothes are for as many summers (holiday time and not) as possible until they fall apart / kids grow out of them, topped up as and when necessary.

NewYearNewJob2024 · 06/03/2026 12:16

We do for our children as they are still really small and need new clothes every season. But me and DH just wear what we have! Unless something needs replacing. I don’t find we use our summer clothes much so they last years and years!!!

ay30916 · 06/03/2026 12:09

Absolutely not. I top up a few bits we need plus I have some stuff that I only ever wear on holiday so I wouldn’t just throw them away after one holidays worth of usages. Bonkers.

Im not returning from holiday and just throwing clothes in the bin. They do make there way to charity if I've not worn them for 12 months or so

Donating to charity just ao you can buy new is so wasteful though. Much of it ends up in landfill.

Chatsbots · 06/03/2026 12:18

I pretty much wear all my clothes until they have literal holes in them. I do have sensory issues tho, so prefer the very "lived in" feel.

What a waste of money. Hope your retirement is sorted, that amount would compound nicely. I'm quite enjoying picking up stuff for my hobby (!) preloved!

goz · 06/03/2026 12:19

I can’t imagine buying all new summer wear for a holiday because you can’t be bothered to store some bikinis and summer dresses!

Why would you put clothes into a charity bag merely because you haven’t worn them for 12 months? That only works with basic items you clearly aren’t reaching for over and over, for weather specific clothes don’t just bin a sundress because you haven’t been wearing it over winter!

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 12:20

Mostunexpected · 06/03/2026 12:05

I genuinely can't understand this. What do you do with the old clothes if you buy everything new every time you go away?

I am currently having to buy quite a few new things for the kids as they seem to have grown loads recently. It's costing hundreds just for their stuff, if I had to buy entirely new stuff for me and DH as well I'd be spending the cost of an entire other holiday.

Well they seem to make there way to a charity shop if I dont like them any more or I've seen something nicer. Sometimes I find that somethings I wouldn't wear in the UK if it was warm and vice versa some uk summer clothes I dont find suitable for a abroad holiday. If im going away every other year I like to make an effort

Ive never done this. We just take the clothes we have?

Mainly because I see nicer things come out and prefer to take those.

No chance! We go on holiday at least six times a year so it would be ridiculous to always buy new.

If you rarely go on holiday then I can understand wanting to buy new clothes.

We struggle to afford one holiday. If we bought new we wouldn’t go on holiday at all.

Scorpion84 · 06/03/2026 12:22

Might buy a few new tops but the basics will be the same really .kids will probably need new swimwear as last years will be too small.

I like buying my daughter nice dresses but I'll pick them up off Vinted

Namechanged2026 · 06/03/2026 12:23

We tend to go on a sunny abroad holiday 3x per year (perhaps April, June and October), and I would usually buy quite a lot new for the April holiday and then use it for the following couple of holidays. I have built up a collection of really nice sundresses now though and no longer buy new ones unless I really love them. Same with swimsuits… I’ve replaced all of my cheaper ones with Hunza G over the past couple of years and will probably only buy one each year now.

DH will buy himself a couple of new shirts and some new white t shirts for each holiday.

The kids have all new clothes and shoes really as they’re still young and have grown out of those from the previous year.

I used to buy all new clothes for every holiday when I was younger. But now I buy better quality and find I actually want to wear things more often now.

I dont tend to treat myself to much throughout the year, so suppose it all evens itself out

My DH has a small stack of ‘holiday clothes’ which he just picks up and puts in the suitcase when we go away. These clothes have not changed in at least 10 years.

Bjorkdidit · 06/03/2026 12:24

I had a colleague who did this. We were talking about holidays and she asked me what new stuff I'd bought.

We ended up confusing each other because I had no idea what she was on about (I just keep summer stuff that hardly gets worn otherwise in my suitcase so am 90% packed without thinking about it - I do swim all year round so have to add swimwear and underwear etc but the beach dresses etc I just wear the same ones for years).

She couldn't get the concept of not rushing out to buy a whole new wardrobe as part of preparing for a holiday, but thankfully it looks like she and the OP are in a minority, what a waste of time, money and resources.

Unpaidviewer · 06/03/2026 12:26

I don't buy anything new. I buy good quality clothes that last years. Where are you buying all this stuff and how are you storing it all?

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 06/03/2026 12:29

No. I have loads of holiday clothes. I buy new swimwear but not every holiday and I have just bought new sandals because I had to bin a pair.
Wouldn’t it be nicer to get one nicer new thing that’s a bit more special than a whole lot of new cheaper stuff?

WorriedRelative · 06/03/2026 12:29

Absolutely not! I'd save the money towards the next trip! You could probably get an extra holiday every few years with the savings!

Some of my holiday wear is barely worn between trips so is still in great condition, but some is just general summer wear. Either way I just buy things when I need them, so if something is no longer in good condition, or no longer fits, or if my holiday requires a type of clothing/footwear I don't already have due to weather, culture or activities.

For children obviously things are out grown faster so it is even dafter!

We may well be in the minority, im not asking you to pay for it. Im not racking up debt to pay for the things I buy new. I dont splurge during the year, I donate alot of things I dont wear. Realistically by the time I've dealt with children while abroad and theyve wiped what ever on somethings or sun lotion as stained a few things, most would need replacing anyway. Blimey im on about take probably 7/8 evening outfits for a 2 week holiday calm down

OP posts:
Caterina99 · 06/03/2026 12:31

Definitely not!

I mean I have kids and they grow so yes they sometimes need new stuff, but it’s summer clothes they’ll wear for a year ish (hopefully) anyway. Not that they get a huge amount of wear out of shorts and summer clothes in our climate (Scotland) but they aren’t specifically just for the holiday

DH and I - might get the odd new thing, but no certainly not a whole new wardrobe for one week. I bought some new sandals for holiday last year, but I’m hoping they’ll last for many years to come as they hardly get any wear

WinterFrogs · 06/03/2026 12:31
