Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

I suspect @RobinEllacotStrikewas being facetious

I bloody hope so, but you never know on here.

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 12:53

I buy a new DH and DC for every holiday. I throw them away when I get to the airport.

Sofado · 06/03/2026 12:53

No, of course not. It would never occur to me to do that.

Worrieddancemum · 06/03/2026 12:32

I do, plus I get new for my kids, outfits for day and night plus swim wear etc 🫣

Every single holiday? What do you do with it all when you get home? Chuck it away?

I buy new if we need it. So if the kids have had a growth spurt and need new summer clothes then they’ll get new summer clothes. They won’t just be for the holiday though, they’ll be for the season (and obviously until they no longer fit).
I’ve got a lovely couple of swimming costumes that I spent a crazy amount of money on a few years ago. They still fit and are in excellent condition so why would I need new?
We have a family holiday home abroad and go about 3 times a year (plus usually have another holiday or 2 to other places), so buying new for every holiday would be fucking madness.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/03/2026 12:54

This is horrific. You buy a complete suitcase full of brand new clothes, wear them once (maybe twice) then what, just chuck them away?!

Hiw much money do you have?!?!

This is terrible for the planet.

Thesnailonthewhale · 06/03/2026 12:10

you're joking, yes?

Yes I was joking.

I think buying all new stuff for holiday is extremely ridiculous, and you may as well just throw it all away and come back with hand luggage.

With consumerist attitudes like this our world is really fucked isn't it?

I think the only thing I might buy NEW for a holiday is if I need a new pair of walking shoes etc. - I'd only buy something if I needed it for life in general, and I buy very little new at all. I do have teenage daughters and they will buy a couple of new bikinis for a beach holiday - but they will wear them at home too.

This sounds like the best way. I hope you chuck them away at the airport on the way there though, so you can have a nice peaceful holiday by yourself.

itsthetea · 06/03/2026 12:55

Although I did wonder if the OP was buying new partner and children from the title which makes new outfits seem marginally more reasonable!

MrsHaroldWilson · 06/03/2026 12:55

I use my holiday as the time to refresh my underwear - I buy enough new pants for the whole thing and throw out a corresponding number of old, shabby ones. Other than that, I might buy a couple of new summer dresses but not a whole new wardrobe, I like to have some trusty old favourites in my case that I know I will feel comfortable and look nice in.

I go on holiday with DH and I certainly wouldn't think of buying him new clothes, he can sort himself out! My involvement is limited to nagging him every day in the run up to start his packing, in the vain hope he won't leave it until the morning we go, and then at one mile intervals along the motorway, announce various things he has forgotten to put in 😆

VividDeer · 06/03/2026 12:56

God no. Kids usually need a few things due to growth. I might get myself a new top or shorts. As I've usually gained weight!

I’m trying to imagine my DH’s face if I turned up with shopping bags full of a new ‘holiday wardrobe’ for him. He’d think I’d lost my mind!

We tend to go on a sunny abroad holiday 3x per year (perhaps April, June and October), and I would usually buy quite a lot new for the April holiday and then use it for the following couple of holidays. I have built up a collection of really nice sundresses now though and no longer buy new ones unless I really love them. Same with swimsuits… I’ve replaced all of my cheaper ones with Hunza G over the past couple of years and will probably only buy one each year now.

DH will buy himself a couple of new shirts and some new white t shirts for each holiday.

The kids have all new clothes and shoes really as they’re still young and have grown out of those from the previous year.

I used to buy all new clothes for every holiday when I was younger. But now I buy better quality and find I actually want to wear things more often now.

Am same - love Hunza G after discovering it, have two swimsuits, they are so forgiving and comfortable. Have a few nice dresses and trousers specifically fo holidays - as we very rarely get the weather here to wear- including a fab linen two piece by SEE By Chloe

Op the mindset of constantly needing new is wrong, you should be buying things that last and that you love, if you get board quickly you do not love. Donating to charity doesn't balance things out, they are full of fast fashion junk and cant deal with it all. Instead of going to buy new have a look in charity shops or vinted to buy better quality, stylish summer clothes do not date. Shorts and Tshirts for adults should last a good few years. yes kids grow but look at what's missing and replace only what they need not a whole new wardrobe . Unless you live permanently in south of Spain, summer clothes dont get worn that often

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 06/03/2026 12:58

Jesus Christ. No I don’t buy new. I might buy one or two new things if they generally need replacing. I’m not buying any new clothes this year, so that’ll be three holidays without a single new item. No kids though.

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/03/2026 12:58

No, I don't buy new stuff if I'm going away. I'll be with strangers who won't know if my stuff is old or new.
I have bought new stuff while away, but only because I have forgotten to pack something (like the time I went on holiday straight from work and realised that the only footwear I had was what I was currently wearing. In this case a pair of heels when I was going to the Hebrides!)

Figgygal · 06/03/2026 12:58

Christ no
Holidays clothes for adults are largely under our bed and reused year on year.
Kids will get what they need but if they already have a wardrobe of shorts and t-shirts that fit then they'd be bringing those not new ones specifically for holiday.

I hate disposable fashion though and wasting money unnecessarily.

wishingonastar101 · 06/03/2026 12:59

I buy quality items that I like so I don't need to constantly buy new stuff.
My kids are the same... and we look good albeit a bit scruffy sometimes!

Tigerbalmshark · 06/03/2026 13:01

I don’t go on holiday to anywhere where I can’t wear my normal clothes?

I have summer dresses and sandals that I wear in the UK. I have swimsuits I wear in the UK. If we are going on an activity holiday, I have leggings, shorts, hiking boots etc that I wear in the UK. I just pack what I need from my normal wardrobe. I don’t have special “sitting by the pool” clothes, I just put a casual dress over my swimming costume once I’m dry.

The only holiday I do have special clothes for is skiing, and I replace those clothes every 5 years or so.

sundayvibeswig22 · 06/03/2026 13:02

I wear mostly the same things but do try and buy one or two new dresses every day to add to it.

Shittyyear2025 · 06/03/2026 13:03

This sort of thing never even crossed my mind until a few years ago. Maybe new trainers or sandals for the kids, tshirts and shorts if needing new anyway

A (CF) friend was astounded that I could afford a holiday at all (we have friends with a property abroad so accomodation is basically free) as it would include new clothes/shoes as well as flights for everyone, she bought every stitch new for every holiday she took.

pinkpony88 · 06/03/2026 13:04

I usually have something new but often actually buy a lot of things while I’m there. Just because they are a bit different to what I’ve seen at home. Always holding my breath when they weigh my luggage on the way home 🤣

TheFairyCaravan · 06/03/2026 13:05

No I don’t. What a complete and utter waste of money. I need to buy a new bikini for this year but that’s it. Summer clothes tend to last forever, imo, because we hardly ever get a decent Summer, like last year, to wear them.

Pricesandvices · 06/03/2026 13:05

No. That would be mental.

maudelovesharold · 06/03/2026 13:08

It would be my worst nightmare to have a whole new set of clothes to take away, without having a chance to ‘wear them in’, decide what goes best with what, and just feel comfortable in them. I like what I know!

Mostunexpected · 06/03/2026 13:10

Thesnailonthewhale · 06/03/2026 12:07

hundreds?

use vinted

I do for quite a few things but when your kids like to wear the same things it's not easy to find multiple sizes. Plus there's loads of things I've bought where it's arrived and been awful and needed returning.

Even when you do find things suitable it still adds up. For a weeks holiday you need 7 evening outfits, plus multiple day time items, multiple swimsuits (which I'd never want to buy second hand anyway). Buying all this even on Vinted would indeed cost hundreds

MrsHaroldWilson · 06/03/2026 13:10

Back in the first half of the 20th century, new clothes for a holiday were a strong working class tradition - usually sewn rather than bought. But these would have gone on to be worn throughout the year afterwards, as 'Sunday best' and then gradually downgraded to everyday wear as they wore out, or were handed down in the case of children, rather than being a 'holiday wardrobe'.
