Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

no i don't, I often only wear my summer holiday clothes on their one week summer holiday a year so don't need new every time!

aWeeCornishPastie · 06/03/2026 12:00

I always wear the same things! sometimes might buy a new evening outfit or two and mix and match stuff up. Otherwise costsna fortune ?!

minipie · 06/03/2026 12:01

Of course not!

I’ll buy new if there’s something missing - like kids have grown out of swimwear or if my old stuff is looking too tatty or doesn’t fit.

But the idea of buying a whole new holiday wardrobe…. No way. There’s enough cost and planning to do with a holiday without having to add that on. And it’s so wasteful! I’d rather buy a really nice item that will last years.

Waitingfordoggo · 06/03/2026 12:01

No I don’t buy anything unless it is actually needed. I’ve been wearing the same clothes on holiday for the last 5 years or more. (Same at home!)

Many humans could do with buying a lot less stuff and the planet would be grateful.

mrbluebirdonmyshoulder · 06/03/2026 12:02

i buy everything new for everybody. I love the idea of the clothes being brand new for the holiday.

Dinoswearunderpants · 06/03/2026 12:02

No chance! We go on holiday at least six times a year so it would be ridiculous to always buy new.

If you rarely go on holiday then I can understand wanting to buy new clothes.

OperationalSupport · 06/03/2026 12:04

My kids are young enough that they need new clothes most years, but they don’t get a whole holiday-specific wardrobe. They wear their normal t-shirts and shorts and swimwear on holiday and at home. I’ve already started picking up things for them as I see them, and I will get them some sandals in the next few months, but I’m not keeping it all unused until the middle of August!

For me though I’ll wear my normal summer clothes, I might pick up one or two things or replace something that’s past its best.

Drydrydry · 06/03/2026 12:04

Of course not

Mostunexpected · 06/03/2026 12:05

I genuinely can't understand this. What do you do with the old clothes if you buy everything new every time you go away?

I am currently having to buy quite a few new things for the kids as they seem to have grown loads recently. It's costing hundreds just for their stuff, if I had to buy entirely new stuff for me and DH as well I'd be spending the cost of an entire other holiday.

Abra1t · 06/03/2026 12:05

WHy waste buying new clothes if you have the previous years' clothes and they're still in good condition and you still like them? I might refresh with things I actually need or have fallen in love with.

PollyBell · 06/03/2026 12:07

No it would be a waste and terrible for environment

Thesnailonthewhale · 06/03/2026 12:07

No - just take normal clothes

DoggerelBank · 06/03/2026 12:07

Goodness. I can't imagine having nothing better to do with my time and money, and with the planet's resources, than this.

hundreds?

use vinted

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/03/2026 12:08

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

MakingPlans2025 · 06/03/2026 12:08

Wow the planet really is doomed isn’t it

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 06/03/2026 12:08

I prefer not to take new stuff on holiday - less stress if the baggage goes missing!

I do buy stuff if needed, but would never buy a whole new wardrobe just for a holiday.

surely it would be easier to buy yourself just one new outfit for the holiday if you think having new clothes for holiday is a necessity... no need for multiple outfits.

ay30916 · 06/03/2026 12:09

Absolutely not. I top up a few bits we need plus I have some stuff that I only ever wear on holiday so I wouldn’t just throw them away after one holidays worth of usages. Bonkers.

you're joking, yes?

blankcanvas3 · 06/03/2026 12:10

Some new some old. DD’s are only young so their sizes are changing quite rapidly at the moment, so most of their stuff is new. DS, DH and I all have a mixture. I sell stuff all the time on Vinted so it’s always getting a new life somewhere else

Miranda65 · 06/03/2026 12:10

No! Things like linen shirts and trousers don't get used that often, so they can be taken on holiday for years and years.

RattleAndHump · 06/03/2026 12:11

No. We go skiing quite often. The ski kit gets dragged out and we work out what fits who, then I top up from borrowing/charity shops/ vinted as required.

If we go away in the summer I just check the expected weather conditions, and see what we have. If they need something new I will get it. It’s usually T shirts and shorts, so they get used anyway.

Orchidgrower · 06/03/2026 12:12

I try to limit what I buy new, so for my last holiday I had a new pair of trainers. I bought some clothing and accessories on Vinted, but most of what I took I already owned. I am shocked at the extravagance, both in terms of money and resources, of buying all new clothes for a holiday.

ChipsandCheesewithGravy · 06/03/2026 12:14

I used to think that this was "necessary " I don't anymore. I might end up with a couple of new summer dresses or something shoes but they are not specifically for the holiday.
