Norway was flipping expensive but Las Vegas was the worst. At least in Norway, you're usually getting something decent for your money. LV, you end up paying a fortune for someone to spit on some ice and call it a drink.

I will say London.

I will be travelling through Europe this summer spending 2/3 days in various cities. London is double the price of other major and capital cities for the least amount of value.

I am paying double for a room-only premier Inn than I am for room with breakfast in Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon and others. Switzerland is the closest in price but still, £80 less per night.

Otoh, spain, in particular the South is amazingly inexpensive and clean and good value for money.

Glas is forbidden in the auditorium. And they obviously want to sell their own overpriced stuff.

Yes, I thought it was the glass too, rather than being overpriced.

We went to the theatre last week for the first time in ages and got beers to take into the auditorium.

We were given a 500 ml can and a plastic glass and at first I thought £4.50 was a rip off for a can of beer but on reflection that 'pint' was cheaper than the one we had with an early dinner from a street food van and also the one we had from an 'old man pub' afterwards.

Perhaps we should start a counter thread about recent times when things are cheaper than expected.

As well as my previous theatre beer, I can add the free tapas that you still get in Andalusia.

2 euros will get you a beer that is around 300 ml and a small plate of food that is often quite decent and sufficient for lunch on its own or you might want a couple if you're extra hungry.

I rarely actually buy lunch while there because of all this free food they give you.

novocaine4thesoul · 16/04/2024 02:37

Croatia, particularly since they moved to the Euro. Makes Venice seem reasonable. Used to be a really good value destination.
Most french or swiss ski resorts, particularly Val d'Isere, I think you need to expect this, but 5e for a bottle of water surely cannot be justified.

UseOfWeapons · 16/04/2024 06:49

Tremiti Islands.

Yes, an excellent idea re counter thread! I’d be v interested to read that. We are going to Vietnam this year hoping it’s good value.

Venice has been mentioned on this thread as well as the value for money thread. odd

Many of the countries and places listed have very low GDP and high poverty levels, or else very high cost of living (Switzerland, Scandinavia, small islands which have to import most of their food and fuel) or huge environment sustainability issues (eg Venice, mountain snow ski resorts, see also small islands)

I see very little recognition that they are simply charging survival prices to tourists.

Eg most Croatians are not becoming wealthy off the back of overpriced water and ice cream. These people still live in very humble and often unstable economies.

As tourists we have a duty to be aware of the brutal reality of local economies, then try to choose locally owned businesses to spend our money, and be understanding that it’s need not greed driving high prices.

Dalaman airport, Turkey.

Anyone who says anywhere else has not been to Dalaman airport 😂

BarrelOfOtters · 17/04/2024 13:04

Airport in Nassau Bahamas. Bottle of beer landside was $3 airside $15. I was shocked!

I found Venice not too unreasonable to be honest. But we spent a lot of time wandering away from the main tourist bits, ate at night standing up in bars with prosecco on tap (because we wanted to and it was more fun rather than being skint) and had lunchtime menus away from the tourist bits.

Our hotel though was on the Grand Canal and was eyewateringly expensive - £60 for a brandy.

Biomic · 17/04/2024 13:11

Iceland, it is an amazing place and I would love to go again. But the cost of food and drink was shocking.

Caspianberg · 17/04/2024 15:02

I don’t fine Venice, Slovenia or Croatia overpriced tbh. Sure if you just go to tourist traps or all inclusive hotels, but we went to all three within the last 12 months and have found them cheaper than where we live.

We stayed in a fabulous small hotel for example in Slovenia on drive down to Croatia. €65 a night for the three of us in a large room with separate living area, and breakfast included, and free car Charging. They had a Michelin restaurant onsite also where we ate that evening for less than €100 for three of us to have the tasting menu and wine.

crackofdoom · 17/04/2024 20:06

Oh, people get out at the station and walk straight down the main drag to Piazza San Marco, or arrive straight there on a boat transport from the airport, plop themselves down at one of those restaurants in the vicinity with a pre- laid table next to a canal with an over- friendly waiter and a menu in 5 languages then complain that they've been ripped off 🙄.

TeamPolin · 17/04/2024 20:20

Absolutely Centre Parcs.

Netcam · 17/04/2024 20:22

Norway. But it was beautiful and it was worth it.

BearlyUp · 17/04/2024 20:25

Tulum. Bottle of cheap UK supermarket plonk (£7 ish here) was about £70. 😱😱😱😱

Skykidsspy · 17/04/2024 20:32

Dublin

User1979289 · 17/04/2024 22:02

@BearlyUp OMG I forgot Tulum!!Blocked it out I think! £25 for a £1 pack of 2 foam ear plugs! Which I needed because of the horrendous thumping bass ALL NIGHT we left after 2 days 😂

IJemimaDigging · 19/04/2024 18:44

Comic Museum in London. It cost £16, and took 5 minutes (being generous) to go round.

ILOVEALLCAKES · 20/04/2024 06:29

Geneva! We stayed a night post skiing as flights cheaper on Sunday compared to Saturday. In 24hrs, ended up spending more than we saved.

Agree with Dublin too. Insanely expensive in 2019, dread to think what it’s like now.

Helsinki. We were eating in a harbour restaurant and wanted a bottle of wine. Was relieved to see Villa Maria Sauvignon at 70 euros. Steep but we were expecting high scandi prices.

Reader, that was for a glass. Not a bottle. We sipped slowly.

😳😳😳 that's shocking !

And a little wary of my September holiday now having seen so many people saying Croatia. We've been twice to Porec many years ago and it was really cheap, especially the first time in the late 90s. We will be staying in a villa just outside Dubrovnik so imagine that will be £££ to eat out everywhere? I've heard that transport ie buses and Ubers is cheap though .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/04/2024 21:05

Someone up thread has said Sardinia but we don't find it particularly expensive at all - and the agriturismo meal seemed good value - yes it cost €50 each but we had two glasses of wine each, a bottle of water, a liqueur and 13 courses ! (Counting each dish - I think we had extra food as DH had the meat version and I had veggie).

LA - expecially when you're expected to add at least 20% 'tip' onto things.
