Monaco.

Barbados. Just got back, stunning beaches, really enjoyed it.

But the supermarket prices were eye-watering, even at a big supermarket chain recommended by locals. You get around 2.4 Barbadian dollars to the pound. Small pack of wafer ham, $40, litre of milk, $25, small bar of chocolate, $8, sharing bag of crisps, $12, smallish pizza $30.

Not a good combination with teenagers who love to eat their way through the day. Oddly there were loads of Waitrose branded items that weren't as badly priced as some of the brands.

Daylesford Organic

Oh yes. Did you see mr Bamford is being chased for tax evasion? All those cashmere throws and posh tomatoes add up

Movinghouseatlast · 13/04/2024 13:59

Yes, Barbados! Eating out is really expensive, wine especially is so much I didn't drink much of it.

We actually took food in our suitcase and ate in for dinner most nights this time. Its such a fantastic place it didn't matter.

Newgirls · 13/04/2024 14:00

I think this thread shows how much the £ tanked after Brexit. It’s still so weak compared the $ and €

Neveralonewithaclone · 13/04/2024 14:01

Slovenia!

MariaLuna · 13/04/2024 14:01

Mykonos. 12 to 14 Euros for a glass of wine ffs.

Indeed
there is a big difference between overpriced and just (seeming) expensive

if the £ was stronger nobody’d be complaining

but anywhere like Disney- yes overpriced. As are most British trains.

MummyJ12 · 13/04/2024 14:13

I think I’d still be complaining, a good exchange rate isn’t going to make a £29 glass of wine in Dubai any more affordable! 😆

Iceland (country, not shop!) is quite dear.

We didn't find it that much pricier than London tbh. Everyone warned us how expensive it would be, but apart from sandwhiches from Subway it was OK if you didn't want a lot of alcohol to drink. I was talking to an English girl who lives there, manager of a spa we went to who was saying imported stuff (food, cars) is a bit pricier, but heating and childcare are significantly cheaper than the UK, university is free. Swings and roundabouts.

Really? The food shops are really dear, IMO.

AuntieMarys · 13/04/2024 14:21

New York...and I'm used to London prices. But I don't begrudge a penny

Crushed23 · 13/04/2024 14:22

Where are people eating out in London such that they think Iceland or Helsinki are ‘not much more expensive’?

I live in London and eat out regularly - anything from an on-the-go salad at Pret to Michelin star client dinners with no spend limit, and I have never seen a €70 glass of wine as standard or even £29 (Dubai example above). That would be quite far down the menu with many cheaper options available.

Crushed23 · 13/04/2024 14:24

London is very expensive, but it is far from one of the most expensive places, even with the shitty exchange rate.

Neverpostagain · 13/04/2024 14:28

Oslo

PastorCarrBonarra · 13/04/2024 14:30

Stonehenge. Felt ripped off tbh.

chickenpieandchips · 13/04/2024 14:43

Just been to Rome. It's cheaper than the UK if you don't eat/buy snacks within spitting distance of the Bain sights.
All the attractions were reasonable if purchased direct from the place. Kids were free to the colosseum. Prosecco (wine glass size) was €6 at dinner.
Clothes teen stores were € to £ so cheaper too.
London is expensive as a tourist., I live very rarely do tours stuff. I but most of our theatre tickets on today tix £20 offers. We rarely eat out on central London etc. Day trips involve a walk in the park and a meal deal 😂.

chickenpieandchips · 13/04/2024 14:44

As for overpriced Dubai, NYC, CentreParcs and tourist trap London places.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 13/04/2024 14:45

What we do is do our research before going to places and try to avoid over-priced, touristy, showy offy stuff as its not for us.

Blahblahlala1 · 13/04/2024 14:57

It was a big joke.

NeverHadHaveHas · 13/04/2024 16:22

Capri! 20 years ago my mum and I paid about £70 for two bowls of spaghetti with tomato sauce (we are both veggie) and two soft drinks

Crikeyalmighty · 13/04/2024 17:32

Having lived in Copenhagen and we used to go to Sweden a lot too I can say Scandinavia (all of it)is expensive for eating out or drinking out. Thing is though they are on better wages and actually in supermarkets my bill was only around 10% more than I spent in UK . Booze in supermarkets was comparable to UK if not slightly cheaper, utilities were much cheaper as was public transport and childcare- so we are kind of looking at it through eyes of being a tourist -because of course you tend to be eating out and drinking a lot when on holiday.

Switzerland is hugely expensive as is Iceland and Norway and Finland.

I thought Dubai was eyewateringly pricey for going out (as well as boring) and it was the most sober holiday I've ever had. Lovely accommodation though that was reasonable for the standard

California last year- I've always loved Cali but blimey due to poor exchange rate at moment it seems incredibly pricey- again drinking in particular- every glass of wine I had was lovely and top notch - but around £13 a 175ml glass and a lot of main courses at around £32 - we really did some compromising this time and I drank less and we 'shared' more than we have done before - good job portions were massive.

Snowpatrolling · 13/04/2024 17:50

Tesco. 🤦‍♀️
