Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

Fiji. Everyone from here goes there because it's close & cheap. But, it's dirty, boring and difficult to travel outside the resorts.

Just curious - why is it always 'worst places'. I'd like to see 'best places'. So much less offensive.

If you want to start a thread, then nobody is stopping you. And ‘offensive’ to who exactly?

Paris is a shithole that makes me feel safe in London.

stcrispinsday · 23/01/2024 21:10

I've had two terrible holidays in Majorca. I don't really get the Balearics generally.

Tunisia was actual hell. A dead insect in the pool the size of a small dog the entire time we were there.

Macchu Pichu was amazing but the litter and sewage all over the place was really depressing.

Sarahconnor1 · 23/01/2024 21:11

Another vote for Los Angeles

Bumper to bumper traffic
Dirty, felt unsafe all the time, air pollution was awful, extreme levels of homelessness, Hollywood boulevard is a shit tip.

I wanted to fly home early

Sususudio · 23/01/2024 21:12

Vegas.

turtleyawesome1 · 23/01/2024 21:13

Copenhagen for me, annoyingly because I wanted to love it! A handful of exquisite (with matching price tags!) cafes/ bakeries & a row of colourful houses.
Not worth it, would much rather go to Norway!

Barbados for me.

I love Barbados! What didn’t you like? X

VeryQuaintIrene · 23/01/2024 21:13

I've never got on well with Rome. It feels slightly unsafe (and I am not at all a paranoid person about that sort of thing), full of letchy men and sort of grubby and malodorous all round. Oddly, I love Athens, of which similar things are sometimes said.

It's weird. I was in Morocco with two teenage girls last year for a couple of weeks touring round and spending time in both villages, towns, the desert and Marrakesh - they are both really lovely, pretty girls, and I'm not completely terrible looking myself.

But we didn't have a single leer or shout or unwanted attention 🤷🏻‍♀️ We just had a fantastic trip.

It just shows how different situations can be.

Same, nothing untoward. It might have been the family group with DM, FIL, DH, DC, but perfectly polite and respectful.

New York

I'm a Londoner from Hackney and a trip to Brooklyn felt like I had shelled out thousands to mooch around some different art galleries, while staying in a similarly poor, dirty, but louder (ridiculously loud!) place. Food was good though and it is a lie that New Yorkers aren't friendly (though maybe I am just a London arsehole).

Paris

Was bearable but I wouldn't bother going back. Similar to the above. I love the Picasso and Rodin museums, but feel the effort of going to Paris which smells and is full of rude people, is just slightly too high a price to pay for some different art galleries to London.

redfacebigdisgrace · 23/01/2024 21:13

Oh I love Paris!

I agree that Dublin was disappointing.

SF- really really didn’t like it. Made the best of it as we were with the kids - cycled over the bridge, did a ball game, Alcatraz. But Fishermen’s Wharf is awful and there’s a very weird vibe in the city. Groups of dispossessed people, a bit like a zombie movie. Tents under flyovers.

Brisbane- sweaty and dirty brown river . I was desperate to see the sea the whole time.

I generally like most places as I do lots of research (holiday nerd) and try to
look on the bright side!

Some of these posts are hilarious - the whole of Australia is boring and hot. Edinburgh is “pretty in parts”. Obviously not been to the right bits, stunning city and Australia is totally fabulous.

DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised · 23/01/2024 21:13

Venice! Was expecting a fairytale city… instead soooo overpriced and full of tourists!! You get over the water pretty quickly and then there isn’t much to see

Another vote for Bali

Parts of Bali I didn’t like, but Ubud and Uluwatu I liked a lot.

ActDottie · 23/01/2024 21:15

Santorini

I think our mistake was more that we spent a week there and it was far too long. Once you’ve seen the sunset and done the volcano tour we were actually quite bored with not much to do. Wish we’d done just a few nights there.

Orange21 · 23/01/2024 21:16

Lisbon
Mexico

Tarantella6 · 23/01/2024 21:16

Hollywood is bad but I don't mind the rest of LA, I know the traffic is bad but I expected it.

IOW. Every single thing we did felt cheap but actually cost £££. Robins Hill was the only good day and now it had closed.

Itsbeginingtolookalotlikexmas · 23/01/2024 21:16

Loved Bali and Barcelona
I was disappointed with Las Vegas

Gnomegarden32 · 23/01/2024 21:16

Agree with the poster who said Lisbon.

Always had a wonderful time in Paris - maybe I was just lucky

Jakadaal · 23/01/2024 21:17

Venice - a dying and depressing city.. As a PP said overpriced, rammed with tourists all following someone with an umbrella.

redfacebigdisgrace · 23/01/2024 21:17

Oh yes Lanzarote. How could I forget? Hated it. No trees, black sand and fruit costing a fortune (imported). Full of retired Brits. And we were burgled twice. Urgh

bringincrazyback · 23/01/2024 21:17

Mikimoto · 23/01/2024 20:28

Paris is a centre of culture and high-end cuisine, so it's not for everyone.

Yeah, but there's dog shit everywhere (unless it's changed in recent years) which isn't especially cultural...

AlexTurnersmicrophone · 23/01/2024 21:18

lavagal · 23/01/2024 20:34

Malta- was like a building site everywhere we went

With you on that, didn't get Malta at all.

Winnipeggy · 23/01/2024 20:57

All of it?

Boring people will be bored wherever they go.
Bored on a continent.

This thread is very unintentionally funny.

ClimbingHydrangea · 23/01/2024 20:32

Would be nice if the streets matched and weren’t covered in dogshit then. Rude people, streets covered in shit and rubbish and piss poor customer service.
