Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

I love Barbados, but then it probably depends what part you stay in whether you have a nice time or not. I’ve been a few times, always found it super friendly, chatted to loads of local men (and women) as well as visitors on the beaches there, passed the time of day, passed a joint - I’ve even asked one group of locals we met to keep an eye on my son (at the time 16 weeks old) so we could have a quick swim. Totally fine and lovely people. We didn’t get propositioned for sex! Maybe I’m missing something 😆

It’s weird that the responses to those disliking Paris have been generally snobbish.

I was just about to say this, those of us who didn’t like it are just uncultured philistines obviously. The snobbery over a European City is hilarious.

Moier · 23/01/2024 20:50

Kalkan Turkey.. never again.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 23/01/2024 20:50

Cape Verde - nothing to see, felt unsafe exploring the island, sea too rough to even dip in, all inc meh.

Antigua - been to lots of Caribbean islands and it just didn’t have any wow factor that would make me want to return except maybe the hummingbirds but they’re elsewhere too!

Nassau in the Bahamas. Yes yes to the islands but Nassau is an over crowded tourist junk spot.

Luxembourg - very boring

Sardinia - Cagliari specifically as apparently everything good is in the north. Never ever felt so unwelcome in a country, especially by all hospitality staff. We’d go to a restaurant and it’s like they hated us! So so rude.
we were actually with Sardinian people (my db married a Sardinian) and they said that’s just how everyone is, plus they hate the Brits!

Paris may have been great to visit historically, but it's a hellhole these days.

I never saw the appeal of LA for a holiday and these days it's also a hellhole along with San Fran.

San Francisco was elwhat I came to mention. I hoped for bohemian Mrs Madrigals and so much fun. Syringes, scary drugged up people, humans shitting in the street, so many homeless people. It was so, so sad. Not the joyous image at all.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/01/2024 20:50

If there is a hell, and I have done something awful, I will be banished to LA. If I really fuck up and am unredeemable, I will be in LAX.

I've been to 40+ countries, run out of money and food, slept on floors and eaten bugs. I've had to smile at a pile of boiled offal and eat every piece, I've got so ill I've been hospitalised near death. I've almost drowned, been frightened out of my head, been in coups and other 'disturbances'.

There is not a single place I wouldn't give another chance to... except LA.

TheCadoganArms · 23/01/2024 20:51

I love Paris but I avoid the usual tourist haunts and know my way around the place.

I agree Dublin is overrated and I'm Irish.

"Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly"

Are we meant to guess where it is? Confused

Japan
Awful breakfasts
Miserable looking people in Tokyo

Morocco. The relentless unwanted attention from men calling out comments and leering was exhausting.

We stayed here in Bali, no Aussie backpackers in site! https://komaneka.com/resort/bisma/rooms/

Parts of LA (and SF) are wonderful. But even 15 years ago they were far nicer places than they are today. The homelessness, rows of tents, drugs, mental illness, the desperation, horrifying. This is America.

Deathbyathousandcats · 23/01/2024 20:53

Mostar has tat shops and awful waiters who kept harassing my then 14 year old step daughter. Dirty bastards.
Im not surprised that people throw themselves of that bridge.

InWalksBarberalla · 23/01/2024 20:53

Trying to work out how KL could be considered dull?

annieloulou · 23/01/2024 20:54

Gibraltar - Birkenhead with sun.

Lisbon - so many beggars, it was relentless.

Venice - wanted it to be magical, my expectations were unrealistic.

countdowntonap · 23/01/2024 20:55

Mykonos and Santorini. Although I think the word is out now that these places are over hyped.

Blindingsunlight · 23/01/2024 20:56

Lanzarote - thought we'd take a chance - big mistake.
Ruined by Brits in the 1970s.

Deathbyathousandcats · 23/01/2024 20:56

Did you do San Francisco? We only spent a night in LA either side, si were perhaps soared the full hideousness, but in my head LA is nit quite the hellhole San Francisco is. Though LAX is a fucking trauma. Do I need to write off California?

I absolutely love Japanese breakfasts! My absolute favourite! I also found Japanese people really friendly and welcoming.

I would also say Barbados (we stayed in a lovely place but the entertainment was diabolical and we didn’t really enjoy anywhere else we went). Tulum in Mexico is awful and Holbox is so far from an island paradise it’s unreal! (I believe both destinations have changed a lot in recent years).

to the PP who said Australia - you do realise it’s a very big place and there is a huge amount going on there!? To say the entire country is boring is a bit of a stretch…! 😂

Australia. Too hot and boring. Really don't get the hype.

All of it?
