Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

I don’t think it’s built up to be anything amazing but just from the sheer volume of people who go there.. Tenerife. I’ve been twice and the weather hasn’t been great either time and the beach isn’t nice at all in comparison to other places like Majorca

Paris 😩. I’ve tried and tried. I think it’s probably a bit like London (where I live), if you know where you’re going and speak the language perfectly it’s fine but I felt uncomfortable every time I’ve been there. I’ve given up on it now. Versailles however and is lovely and I go to the South of France every year. I like other European cities; Rome, Berlin, but Paris I can’t get on with.

Madeira.... they have this attraction where they push you down a hill in what can only be described as a 90s style wicker patio sofa.... it was just all a bit meh.

I came on to say the same! We went there on a cruise - thank god we didn't do a 2 week holiday there!

Paris may have been great to visit historically, but it's a hellhole these days.

I never saw the appeal of LA for a holiday and these days it's also a hellhole along with San Fran.

couiza · 23/01/2024 20:38

Florence. It was absolutely heaving with tourists (I was one too!), streets jammed, long queues for everything, and so on. Yes I know it is a stunning city, but once I managed to crawl through a few streets and see the Duomo and the bridge, I was glad to get out. Not a chance of seeing the museums and galleries, even if pre booked, too many people. I've a feeling it's crammed all year round too a bit like Venice I suppose. I'll have to go there in January and get up at six in the morning or something!

However, not too far away is Lucca which is absolutely delightful and charming. I enjoyed it there a lot!

Another vote for Bali

brownbutterfrangipanetart · 23/01/2024 20:39

Paris for reasons mentioned above - so called ‘city of love’ that in reality stinks of sewage and full of dog poo. Such a cliche place for proposals.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/01/2024 20:39

Lake Louise. Don’t get me wrong, it is beautiful but that beauty means it is very very overcrowded.

Gloriousgardener11 · 23/01/2024 20:40

Dublin - overpriced and the locals were rude.

indiana24 · 23/01/2024 20:41

Paris, every time I've been I've been left disappointed. Thankfully all dc have been and ticked off the tourist hotspots now so I don't have to venture in again.

Jason118 · 23/01/2024 20:43

Dubai - everything is fake

Minibea · 23/01/2024 20:43

A third vote for Bali; a million miles away, rubbish beaches, massively overcrowded and very underwhelming food. Basically a Benidorm for Australians

Mumaway · 23/01/2024 20:43

Barbados. Just awful. Felt unsafe a lot of the time, approached by sex workers on the beach constantly (male and female), drugs everywhere

Bladwdoda · 23/01/2024 20:44

I’m glad people are saying Dublin, I thought to it was overrated too. A few nice sights/museums but I didn’t feel it was a nice place to wander about, like other cities.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 23/01/2024 20:44

I loved Kuala Lumpur! The food is insane.

For me it’s Bali. So overhyped and when you get there it’s just a sort of boring grubby backpacker hostel for Aussies. So many nicer places in south east Asia.

Also Suva, Fiji - supposed to be an island paradise, actually a total hole.

User1786 · 23/01/2024 20:44

Barcelona.

Silverbirch7 · 23/01/2024 20:44

Cue the predictable Paris pile on. Weird as Paris even has McDonald's these days so readers can still have their ' treat days' there. 🤣🤮

whatthehellnow23 · 23/01/2024 20:45

@Changingplace oooh can I ask why Tunisia? I have the chance to go and I haven't been sure...

Count yourself lucky. I went there for a week and it pissed down every single say. Funchal is basically a small town, Guilford has more going on. Was looking forward to getting home and then the Icelandic volcano dust cloud decended on europe and I was stuck there for another ten days. The airline put us up in a hotel that could only be described as a 1970s themed old people's home where they had forgotten to remove the dead.

LewishamMumNow · 23/01/2024 20:45

Australia. Too hot and boring. Really don't get the hype.

It’s weird that the responses to those disliking Paris have been generally snobbish.

Causewithoutarebel · 23/01/2024 20:46

Paris
Tahiti
LA

I think you might have got off the train in Leeds by accident?

Less likely to be stabbed in Leeds

Bathtimebarbara · 23/01/2024 20:47

LA is a complete dump.
The tourist ‘must sees’ are all run down, crime ridden and basically just on dual carriage ways.

Maldives- a hell of a lot of travel for a nice beach where you are at the mercy of the one hotel on that island who charge you through the nose to fart.

Chewbecca · 23/01/2024 20:47

So what was your tropical island please OP? We need to avoid!

I didn’t like Monastir in Tunisia at all but I don’t think it was really ‘rated’ so I can’t say overrated! It was grubby with dirty people and letchy men.
