Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

I can’t think of somewhere I really didn’t like. Maybe Dublin, but only ever been there for a night or two.

Bali doesn’t have the best beaches, but Ubud is beautiful (but yes, busy in the town) and staying on the east side or north is quieter than the west coast.

I actually dropped a wad of cash on Los Ramblas and a lovely Spanish boy chased after me to give it back (not likely to be representative!)

LA I enjoyed, but DP lived there and so we knew lots of people from LA which makes a difference I think.

Which airport?
Hurghada Airport has very high security

It was Sharm el-Sheikh

I will defend Naples to the hilt, like a gladiator atop a volcano. I swear half the people who hate it barely get past the train station, which is in the arse end of town.

Me too. I love Naples and have had two really great holidays there. What is it they say? Rome may be the heart of Italy but Naples is its soul. I'll also watch anything set in Naples.

Access to historical ruins from Naples is so easy too. And if you want an ideal two centre break, then the islands of Procida and Ischia are wonderful and a quick boat ride away.

Mauritius. So far to fly for a disappointing holiday. Was expecting far more.

@wondabar like what for example? We love Mauritius.

Dublin. We did everything worth doing in a day. Unfortunately we were there for longer. We spent the rest of the time doing things we could do in our home city. A total waste of money.
Naples was filthy and felt unsafe. We went to the museum which was amazing, but not a place I would go back to.

I agree re Dublin. You have to leave the city. There are nice coastal towns/suburbs but you need decent weather for beach/cliff walks and they are not everyone’s idea of a good time either. There is t much to do in most of them other than see the coastline.
Other than that, you have to go south really to find places worth visiting.

We have travelled around Ireland and loved it. But we had went to Dublin on a long weekend break with no car hire. It was a few years ago so there was even less to do then. We queued to file past the Book of Kells for example, and thought is that it.

We had a great time in Dublin last February. But I wasn’t expecting fab architecture or great weather . We went to the Storehouse, Trinity College, walked around the government building and the galleries near St Stephen’s Green, visited Kilmainham Gaol which was soo moving. We definitely experienced the craic and the Guinness. Great times.
