Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

Jersey and Madeira, both of them a big let down. Jersey - stuck in 1970s England and not in a good way. I expected a strong French influence and a high end vibe. Nothing to recommend it apart from the climate. Unexpected delightful destinations though were the Isle of Man and Mallorca, I had low expectations of both but loved both places.

Dubai

Hated the place and will never go back

WolfFoxHare · 23/01/2024 21:20

Lisbon. Fine for a short city break but we were there for a week and it started raining halfway through. It was October, there was nowhere to dry our clothes in the hotel room and it was depressing and dull.

redfacebigdisgrace · 23/01/2024 21:20

On a roll now- Santorini. Beautiful but soulless. Like it’s been hollowed out for tourism (it has). Sad. Full of Chinese tourist groups carrying umbrellas and Americans with professional photographers in tow.

ladyhosen · 23/01/2024 21:20

Bali. Been 3 times over 30 years and was appalled by the changes.

MrsAvocet · 23/01/2024 21:20

I wouldn't say I have ever had a bad holiday but I was a bit underwhelmed by the French Riviera. It was just a bit dull. I like a holiday where there's lots to see and do and there didn't seem to be a lot besides the beach and a lot of shops and restaurants. Though to be fair, I was on crutches when we went so if I went back I might find there were more interesting places that we missed last time.
And I was disappointed in Niagara Falls. I mean obviously the falls themselves are impressive but I was expecting them to be surrounded by beautiful scenery not a in the middle of a town reminiscent of Blackpool. I'm glad I have been, but I wouldnt go back.

I used to live in Paris and it was a wonderful place to live. As with most major cities you have to steer away from the tourist bits but the architecture, the food, the galleries... sublime. I much preferred it to London.

Lake Louise. Don’t get me wrong, it is beautiful but that beauty means it is very very overcrowded.

Luckily, we made it there and for some reason, it was v quiet...bliss.

bellamountain · 23/01/2024 21:22

-Paris made worse by really rude people.
-Center Parcs, the pool is literally all it has going for it (so overpriced to stay in a shed in the woods).

KanyeJohnWestTuna · 23/01/2024 21:23

There is much less dog shit on the Parisian streets than there used to be!

I remember seeing a guy out on a motorcycle hoovering up the turds years ago but now there are free poo bag dispensers and notices saying you’ll get fined for not picking up “Les dejections canines”

I can’t see poo-bag dispensers working in the UK here because of vandalism.

tuscanvines · 23/01/2024 20:32

Lisbon

Yes I agree. We were hassled by drug pushers most nights, rubbish bags emptied on the street and trod in dog shit more times than I can remember. Yuck!

BudgetFoodie · 23/01/2024 21:23

Skegness......I went with low expectations and they weren't met🤣🤣🤣

redfacebigdisgrace · 23/01/2024 21:24

It’s weird but we always seem to find such nice people everywhere when we go to Paris. I was saying the last time that the rudeness is a myth. I do try and speak French. Maybe that helps? Although they generally reply in English 😂

GintyMcGinty · 23/01/2024 21:24

Barcelona

redfacebigdisgrace · 23/01/2024 21:24

@BudgetFoodie
🤣

newyearnewnothing · 23/01/2024 21:24

Santorini- OIA is a different level of hell at sunset. I would never go back there!
Dublin- it's like an over priced Irish theme park.
Barcelona- just awful. Hated the place.

C1N1C · 23/01/2024 21:24

Mauritius
Dublin
Paris
Bali
Dubai
Morocco
Tunisia

...seem to be the most frequent.

I actually agree with all of these!

I'll add Jersey.

Ophy83 · 23/01/2024 21:25

I love Paris and found it very child friendly. But we were staying around the jardins du Luxembourg and avoided too many if the big tourist spots.

The only place I really hated was the Costa del sol. Not big fans of centre parcs either though the kids were very young when we went and would probably get more out of it now

saraclara · 23/01/2024 21:25

Good grief. I've been to more than half of the places mentioned so far, and completely disagree about all of those destinations.

Sounds like most of you should just stay home.

slore · 23/01/2024 21:25

I hope no one says Venice. We're about to leave in a few hours for our first holiday in 15 years

AuntMarch · 23/01/2024 21:26

Not a holiday but an attraction we'd based the holidays around as my ex wanted to see it..

The grand canyon. Its just a massive hole. And you see slightly less massive but still huge holes on the approach so you don't even get the full impact.

penjil · 23/01/2024 21:26

Mumaway · 23/01/2024 20:43

Barbados. Just awful. Felt unsafe a lot of the time, approached by sex workers on the beach constantly (male and female), drugs everywhere

Oh my! That's completely the opposite of my experience there.

MCOut · 23/01/2024 21:27

Rome and Athens. I had been so excited to go to these cities and both were beautiful but I didn’t find the people very nice.

I love Paris, I’ve been lucky in that every time I go, I’ve had the most wonderful interactions with people. The same with Dublin.

OddityOddityOdd · 23/01/2024 21:27

Bestoffall
I'd forgotten about Dubai - we were there 3 days, in a country that has 360 days of sunshine a year we had 2 days of rain and a sandstorm . The food was good though 🤣

RantyAnty · 23/01/2024 21:28

The Aussie watering holes in Bali.

Ubud and the remote villages are nice.
