How much is your holiday costing you this year?

I was looking to go to the US for a week but the prices were astronomical and out of my price range. So going to Europe for a week. Destination undecided but looking at flights, accommodation and spending money, I'd still be lucky to spend less than £1000.

Holiday? What holiday?

Alarae · 31/01/2023 17:34

Just under £1,000 for 7 nights for my daughter and I to go to Spain (water park/wildlife park) in May.

Also going away in Aug for 3 nights in the UK but on a slightly fancy house estate place with spa etc with the wider family. I believe our cost will be about £600 for the accommodation but will be more for food on top.

TheChosenTwo · 31/01/2023 17:36

Did you think you’d be able to have a holiday to America (presumably from the U.K.) for less than a grand? - actually maybe that’s just about possible out of season for one person staying somewhere probably not very nice and not going out… How many are you, just one?
Our main family holiday is probably going to cost us quite a lot this year, some years it’s less, others it’s more. Average cost is about 8 grand I’d say, 5 of us but 4 now count as adults and because of the smallest we have to go during the school holidays.
Turkey always sounds pretty cheap listening to friends who go.

I'm baffled that you should you could go the USA for a holiday for £1000. When was the last time you went? 1970?

The best deals will probably be on last minute packages or Airbnb (or similar) apartment + budget flight. You should be able to do that for a grand.

Obviously not. I used to pay around £500 to fly to the States. When I looked I couldn't see flights for much less than a grand. It's shot up massively (obviously) with COVID, the economy and the exchange rate. No idea how people afford family holidays to Florida etc now unless they are top earners.

£40- 45k flights and accommodation

LoveTheSilence · 31/01/2023 17:43

We are going to Cornwall for 3 weeks in the summer. No cost as it’s our house. We are hopefully going to Italy for a week as well but not sure of the cost as we don’t know if our oldest is coming with us yet. A few thousand though.

I was talking about my trip to Europe not the States.

£690 for accommodation for five, two tanks of fuel and the cost of however much self catering food and wine we can shovel down in a week.

heyyouitsme · 31/01/2023 17:47

Just over two weeks in the Maldives during their peak season. With a bunch of children, was cheaper when I didn’t have those..

LadyDanburysCane · 31/01/2023 17:49

As I work in school I am tied to expensive times. One week self catering in U.K. in Feb half term, two weeks self catering (more luxurious) at Easter. Both over £1k per week before food and excursions……. (For two of us).

Baconand · 31/01/2023 17:58

Budget is £4.5k for 2 weeks in a villa in a less typically touristy bit of Spain (an area DH lived in and where we have friends). DH, me and DD although the villa would suit up to 6.

The villa is £2k, flights £800, hire car £300 and £1400 spending money in June.

We don’t go away often, we haven’t flown for 10 years and DD is 3.5 and not had a hol yet.

GorillaGame · 31/01/2023 17:58

£900 for a week all inclusive, for two adults, in Turkey in May. Cheap and cheerful at a hotel we’ve been to before and enjoyed.

We won’t be taking DC away this year, we used to do a family holiday in August for 4/5k but won’t be doing it this year, and probably never again actually! Looking at finances lately has made me realise we have been a bit wasteful in the past and I wish we’d lived more frugally at times and built up savings.

£0. No holiday.
Find these threads very divisive and depressing.
Clearly some people are not feeling the cost of living crisis at all.

meetmeatmidnights · 31/01/2023 18:03

Thousands.

Two weeks in Florida later this year.
A week in Spain in spring.
A week in Italy in summer.

Hopefully a few city breaks here and there as well!

Thinking about maybe a cottage in the UK for a staycation at some point, but the prices are wild, similar prices to going somewhere new abroad!

WelshNerd · 31/01/2023 18:04

We're aiming to spend 3k on 3 UK breaks. Current plan is Northern Ireland, Butlins and then either bluestone or London.

Intemperatefatty · 31/01/2023 18:11

Yes flights to the Us have shot up a fair bit since Covid. We always used to get PE direct flights to Orlando for £800/900 mark, last year we paid £1100 pp in August and that was indirect there and direct back.

This might not be the thread, or indeed topic for you. Of course the cost of living crisis does not affect everyone, or not to the extent that they can’t afford a holiday.

If it makes you feel better, I managed to get a refund on our flights we had booked for a holiday this year (flights I had to move 3 times as originally paid for before covid for a family do that was cancelled, could only reschedule not get a refund) as they changed the flight times so I was offered a refund or reschedule.

I used the refunded money to pay my tax bill, as I didn't have the money for that. So, no holiday now.

We may have a week SC in part of the UK that we're hoping to move to next year as we've never been, but will depend if DH gets a job in the next few months.

We are very much feeling it. I don’t know how we are paying for it yet. We only have half the cost available and should be spending it on something sensible. But we’ve had enough and will credit card the balance and pay it off eventually. I’m past caring about living frugally.
We’ve had a lot of death in the family recently and quite honestly we just need to do something positive for us as a family and show DD something other than home. (Covid baby).

I expect it will be many years before we go again.
