I was looking to go to the US for a week but the prices were astronomical and out of my price range. So going to Europe for a week. Destination undecided but looking at flights, accommodation and spending money, I'd still be lucky to spend less than £1000.

We are going to Florida, family of 4, £11k all in (flights were only £450 each incidentally) going to New York later in the year hoping to do for around £1k (going with a group) not booked yet.

I am booking a solo week in the winter sun. I have just had 6th operation in 3 1/2 years for breast cancer and was also looking after MIL who died in August. Her last 8 months she lived with us. I feel I need to sit quietly in the sun. DH totally approves. That will be about £1,000 with connecting flights and uk hotels.
Then DH and I are thinking about a Santa trip to Lapland with 3 DGC and our 3 adult children. That will cost about £10,000 but as I said above we lost MIL in August and DH was an only child so it’s a present from a dearly loved lady.
We took the two eldest DGC to Lapland years ago but smallest was only 4 months old. We were hoping to return before now but y’know cancer and Covid spoil the best of plans!

flyingdino · 31/01/2023 20:52

@TheDofS exactly. Some poster put a donut on my comment about the Maldives not knowing my circumstances. Maybe ive just been diagnosed with cancer. Maybe I've never been abroad in my life and saved hard for this once in a life time experience? Maybe it's our 25th wedding anniversary and we didn't even go on a honeymoon when we first got married. Maybe we inherited a small amount of money and only one condition was to use it for a holiday where we added our savings. Maybe we make millions. People shouldn't apologise for what they have got. I used to read these types of threads years ago to get inspiration despite being in overdraft and not once have I ever guilt trip anyone for something they could afford that I couldn't.

We budgeted £5000 for 6 of us and it's looking like

£800 Easter (7 nights in North Wales)
£2300 October half term (6 nights in Spain)
£400 May half term (2 nights in Norfolk)
£800 minibreaks (2 or 3 camping and caravan holidays, and a small music festival)

These include travel and accommodation only so the extra £700 will go towards food and trips - we will blow the budget though obviously. We don't tend to spend much on excursions etc as we just like walking, beaches, napping and general sightseeing.

Disappointingbiscuit · 31/01/2023 20:55

£550 for five nights in a caravan in the UK 😎

DownInTheDumpster · 31/01/2023 20:55

Costing around £1300 so far for two weeks in Spain in the summer hols. Lucky to stay in a relatives holiday home so that part is free. Spends will probably be another £750-1000. So grateful for the family members home and generosity! Otherwise we wouldn’t be going anywhere.
We are also having a weekend glamping £500 and a weekend away with friends £800!

KittyCatChat · 31/01/2023 20:56

I find these sorts of threads very difficult.

I spent much of my 20's living off income support, single, with a child. I think that was about £67 a week. A holiday was spending a week with my family 4 miles away at their normal house.

These days I'm in a much better position. I have excess money. I'm hugely lucky. I'm not to sure why the cost of my holidays is relent.

£14k holiday to St. Lucia last year for family of 4, August. 18 nights. Mix of 5* hotels and luxury airbnbs, all inclusive, all tours and flights. This year Croatia, £5k including flights and 2 bedroom sea front suite at a top hotel. Expect food, transfers, hotels to be at least another £2k.

To posters who find these threads upsetting, there's an option to hide the thread (click the three dots next to it in Active Convos) or even hide the entire holiday board. It'll save you feeling fed up and posters getting annoyed with you sucking lemons over their happiness.

Figgygal · 31/01/2023 21:08

£1.5k may taking kids out of school a few days before half term saving £1.2k half board spain
£800 a week Airbnb in devon summer holidays

Usually do a couple short breaks in uk but not planning to this year as mortgage due to increase by hundreds a month

Crispynoodle · 31/01/2023 21:10

WelshNerd · 31/01/2023 18:04

We're aiming to spend 3k on 3 UK breaks. Current plan is Northern Ireland, Butlins and then either bluestone or London.

If you come to the north west of NI you will have a fab time and won't want to go home!

CautiousOptimist · 31/01/2023 21:12

Lapland just before Christmas for a week, skiing plus Santa, huskies, reindeer... £8,000 for the 5 of us, 2 adults, 3 kids. Once in a lifetime and we'll look forward to it all year.
North Wales for a week at Easter, £0 as it's a family second home.
Plus possibly CenterParcs or Bluestone in October, 2 week half term means one of the weeks would be much cheaper to go, seems a shame to waste the opportunity. £800

Lapland is just magical. Enjoy every second. :)

Blankspace35 · 31/01/2023 21:21

We are going to Kos, all inclusive for 10 nights, 4 adults and 2 kids for about £5,000

Trumpton · 31/01/2023 21:23

@CautiousOptimist
are you happy to say who you are booking with?
last time was a direct flight day trip and this time I feel we need a bit longer but the company we used only does day trips.

CautiousOptimist · 31/01/2023 21:27

@ZeroFucksGivenToday Oh thank you! Really cannot wait Grin

@Trumpton of course, we booked a week's ski holiday with Inghams and then added on a Santa package which includes huskies, reindeer safari...
We started out looking at 3 nights with various companies but when we looked into it it really wasn't much more to go for a whole week and ski too.

Whitewolf2 · 31/01/2023 21:28

£6k all inclusive beachclub holiday in Sardinia, May half term.
£1.5k Isle of Wight lodge for week in August.
2 adults, 2 kids.

Buffypaws · 31/01/2023 21:31

£2 but I have to cat sit

Ivyleaguestoner · 31/01/2023 21:33

Italy for ten days
£120 for our flights
£600 for 'hotels' (too cold to camp in Feb)
I don't really care about luxury. Just happy with a bed and a shower.

maddiemookins16mum · 31/01/2023 21:34

11 nights in Croatia in early September. Package with Jet 2. Total 1900 HB.

Trumpton · 31/01/2023 21:35

@CautiousOptimist
Thank you I will have a mooch.

weegiemum · 31/01/2023 21:37

We're very lucky and have a second home in the Outer Hebrides (it was our first home for 10 years then we moved but kept the house). Going for a week and a half in March and then 2 weeks in the summer and hopefully in the autumn too. We rent it out in between. So the main cost is the travelling and the wine bill while we are there!

We go abroad about every second year, which has just gone down in price in the last couple of years as children are no longer in school. We had a great holiday in Croatia last June, so need to put the breaks on a bit this year!

Macaroni46 · 31/01/2023 21:37

@PawsOnTheBeach

"The thread is in the ‘Holidays’ topic so people talk about holidays. And even if it wasn’t should people not be able to talk about anything in case others can’t have those things? Ridiculous."

Actually, the post was in chat.

Dyslexicwonder · 31/01/2023 21:41

There are 4 of us all adults for travel purposes: 13 nights in Niseko Japan skiing - £10,000 ( flights £2,800, Hotel £3,000, car hire £800- everything else £ 3,600) was amazing trip of a lifetime.
This summer 7 nights in Wales self catering cottage £900+ spends.
