I was looking to go to the US for a week but the prices were astronomical and out of my price range. So going to Europe for a week. Destination undecided but looking at flights, accommodation and spending money, I'd still be lucky to spend less than £1000.

About £3-£4k, four adults abroad for a fortnight. Less per week than a Uk holiday in similar accommodation and outings.

Lennia · 07/05/2023 14:55

Flights £300, accommodation £650, tube cards, £150. Plus spending money! 😱 Five nights in a European capital city.

countdowntonap · 07/05/2023 19:44

Main holiday abroad in July £4500 two adults self catering.
Cheaper abroad holiday in Feb £1500 two adults B&B
Holiday in UK up to £1000 accommodation

Yate12 · 09/05/2023 21:18

£6000 in total for two holidays this year. Still seems like we are cheapskates and little in comparison to what other posters claim they are spending Sad

34and3 · 10/05/2023 05:18

£14k this year for two big long haul and one European.

Next year will be about the same. £10k for Disney Orlando and probably £4K again for European all inc in the summer

WaitingfortheTardis · 10/05/2023 05:32

We're holidaying in the UK this year, it's about £1k for the 3 of us to stay in a self-catering apartment by the beach. Not too bad for where it is in the school holidays really and it is a 2 bed as we wanted dd to have proper bed not a sofa bed. We've not had a holiday for 3 years so we are really looking forward to this one - whatever the weather!

There is always someone with more, bigger, faster, greater blah blah blah. Do you plan on having a good time? Yes? Great holiday then.

Just think of all the misery on the relationships board and wonder if an expensive holiday would improve their lot. It’s worth valuing what you have, not what you don’t. Easy to say, but it does have some foundation in science.

I don't understand why spending less equates to a sad face? I think spending £6k on holidays in a year is insane. I also can see from my Easter holiday that it'll cost at least that during school term. I personally wouldn't want to be spending £10k+ per year. In still reeling from paying £3.5k on a week away!

How old are you?!

We've had those skint years already when we could barely afford a day out let alone a holiday. I'd be surprised if most haven't at some point. I still liked hearing about other people's holidays who were older and more financially settled than we were at the time.
That's partly what made us start saving and investing and we set up a holiday savings account as well so we've had some wonderful holidays every year for quite some time now.
I'm not surprised at any of the 'claims' I personally know loads of people who have the disposable income to be taking some amazing holidays. Of course people can spend a lot if they've paid off mortgages, worked their way up, dc left home, got investments, inheritance etc

Zipps · 10/05/2023 08:37

Meant to add £6k is hardly cheapskate!

Exactly, I’m in my 50’s and the days of 2 lots of childcare and establishing my career are long ago. We had a great holiday camping in the new forest. The wild horses and pigs were brilliant. Cost a couple of hundred pounds. Glass half full

MintJulia · 10/05/2023 08:42

Reading with interest.

We haven't had a holiday since 2019. I've just had a bonus and can actually afford about £2k for me and teen DS. 😎

Complications are that I recently finished chemo/radio and while I feel fine, travel insurance is absurd. So I think we are limited realistically to UK/Channel Islands/Scillies.

Going by the prices in these posts, we could probably get a week somewhere decent with some spending money. Assuming I haven't left it too late.....

FijiSea · 10/05/2023 08:58

UK breaks only for us this year.
We are priced out of foreign school holiday prices for 5 of us.
We book Hoseasons cottages and caravans.
We will be spending under £1000 and have three mini breaks booked for that.

honeyrider · 10/05/2023 15:45

Our 18 day holiday over the Easter holidays cost €7,000 including spending money. We went to Las Vegas, San Diego (stayed with relations so free), LA, then 6 nights cruise to Vancouver.

It was a trip of a lifetime and different from our usual holidays although there were plenty of years we didn't have holidays unless visiting my family.

Winemygoodenemy · 10/05/2023 19:27

My holiday is expensive to me. But I have never been to Mexico or a luxury holiday so excited. Worked hard and need to relax

The thread is in the ‘Holidays’ topic so people talk about holidays. And even if it wasn’t should people not be able to talk about anything in case others can’t have those things? Ridiculous.

It’s ridiculous for someone to share their own struggles? How callous is that. People read these threads for many different reasons including curiosity about other people’s lives. There was no suggestion you shouldn’t talk about it, just shock that many people have a LOT more financial resources and can get away from the daily grind a few times a year. I’m not surprised OP feels bad reading responses like yours, though. You clearly lack empathy and have no idea how hard it is for so many people right now.

UnfriendMe · 21/07/2024 15:05

We are going to India in October for 2.5 weeks. A few days in Mumbai, a luxury train trip and then 6 days in Kerala. It's a lot more than 1000 though, I think roughly 12k per person. This is the most expensive one this year though, our other holidays were more chill and will prob just stay home over Xmas.

Why have you chosen to post on a zombie thread just to say that? Plus surely everyone knows that we all have different amounts of money, this isn’t communist china.
