Lake District. Campsute on banks of Ullswater and taking the canoe.

heysunshine30 · 10/06/2022 08:51

Greece, Australia & USA! Mostly family / wedding related though. Still exciting!

Next trip is a weekend in Margaret River (western Australia), we usually go a few times a year. Then a trip to Melbourne with friends in November which I'm looking forward to as I've never been. My husband had to do an emergency trip to Ireland last month so that's us for this year, although we usually have a few nights up in the city (Perth) here and there too. Probably Bali next year once its a bit more normal over there. I have friends there at the minute and lots still closed apparently. Big trip planned for 2024!

@DelurkingAJ can I ask how you 'do' South of France please? I've never been and want to next year, but France is so big and spread out, I don't know where to start!
Do you fly? Hire a car? What accommodation do you stay in?

Jumping in here - we hired a car and drove the coast including st tropez & Monaco etc. It was beautiful! Only thing is there are charges at check points on the main roads - it can definitely add up if you're not expecting it.

heysunshine30 · 10/06/2022 08:54

@ImplementingTheDennisSystem oh and we stayed in Airbnb's!! Lovely. Flew in and out of Nice.

DelurkingAJ · 10/06/2022 09:13

@ImplementingTheDennisSystem we have booked a villa through Vrbo (this will be the second time we’ve used them). We’re then flying into Nice (fingers and toes all crossed) and will either book a hire car or take the train.

Although, during that funny break in 2020 when you could travel we were booked to go to the South of France again (different places, near Montpellier) and our flights were cancelled so we drove. Booked a cheap hotel near Lyon and drove over two days. Which was fine. As a child I used to go with my parents by train, sometimes breaking the journey in Paris and sometimes doing the whole thing in a day.

For us at the moment the priority was to be walking distance from (a) a sandy beach (Google street view is your friend here) and (b) shops (at least a boulangerie) and restaurants. When DSs are a bit older the beach requirement will probably fade a bit and we’ll want a bit more culture. Combine those two and I’ve got a search area for the villa finder. I’m suspicious of anything too too cheap but unwilling to pay a fortune so that narrows it down again. Reviews from other guests are handy, taken with a pinch of salt.

Top marks for begrudgery. 👏

Thank you for that. OP did ask. Balance is helpful.

I guess you mean the toll roads/Peages...

Yep can be a shock if you're not used to whole toll road concept which I know is fairly alien to the UK ( Brum aside) and yes if you are driving a long way across France it can add up.

OTOH they generally allow you to cover large distances a lot quicker than the parallel non-paying main routes...

There are some route planners that can give you a heads up as to the amounts involved.

Back garden, weather permitting Smile

Any tips on what to do and what to avoid whilst spending two days in Bangkok? We have a 12 and 15 year old. Temples, TukTuk tour, markets?
It will be in August so expecting some downpours.

parrotonthesofa · 11/06/2022 12:22

Montréal! I'm very excited!

Partypoooooper · 11/06/2022 12:24

Nowhere, we live in a beautiful part of the UK and have no desire to spend hours and ££ traveling.

ShowOfHands · 11/06/2022 12:27

DH has had all leave turned down so I'm taking the children camping in Devon for a week and we're trying to get away as a family to Alnwick for a bank holiday weekend but his work won't confirm whether or not he's definitely off for the bank holiday.

PandaBrush · 11/06/2022 12:29

We went to Spain with my toddler in May - we were planning a USA or Japan trip in November but someone got pregnant Grin

whimsicalwillow · 11/06/2022 12:30

St Ives in August and the Lake District in October.

PAFMO · 11/06/2022 12:44

Salamanca then flying on to Lisbon.

IncessantNameChanger · 11/06/2022 12:51

Same as a pp dh has had leave refused. A week in the IOW and I'm taking the kids via ferry to the IOM.

Booking next years holiday in August so no excuses from dh again. If its booked well in advance.

I'm really cast strapped at the moment so got to use my imagination and how to streach out my spending

I'd love somewhere for October not to far on a plane or transfer but above 20 degrees.
