The more specific the better, ideally.

But I am going to nominate the whole West Coast of Scotland (excluding Fort William and Mallaig).

maggiethemoo · 08/04/2006 10:21

West of Crieff

Pruni · 08/04/2006 11:14

Maggie the moo, my aunt used to live in Comrie. It's beautiful round there!

Notice a few of you have mentioned Holkham beach, it's a nudist beach... always find the beauty marred by the volleyball-playing naturists!

Anyway...

I vote for Scotland, in its entirety but with a special mention for Skye. Can't beat it.

slapheadsrock · 08/04/2006 13:48

Spacecadet you seem to know N Wales well - have you been to Aber Falls?

We just love it there, and it's a short enough walk for little legs.....
Just love Abersoch aswell, fantastic sandy beach with great rock pooling at either end.:)

Karenann · 08/04/2006 14:01

We usually go down South but next week we are going to Wales - Haven, Greenacres. Apparently it is close to Portmerion - has anyone been to either Greenacres or Portmerion. Is Portmerio a good day out with a 5yo?

\link{http://www.portmeirion-village.com/en/index.php\Portmeirion website}

We went with DD1 when she was just 2 - it's not child-unfriendly, but IIRC there's not a lot to do there. Lovely buildings and gardens to look at and a fabulous beach though. (Would advise not going in pouring rain as we did Grin)

Karenann · 08/04/2006 15:07

Thanks for that link JanH. do you know the area - is there anywhere else you would recommend.

JanH · 08/04/2006 15:21

It's over 20 years since we went there, ka, and I don't remember anything else we did - Portmeirion sticks in my mind because of the foul weather!

We were in a caravan at Morfa Nefyn on the \link{http://www.llyn-wales.co.uk/llyn-where-to-visit.html\Lleyn Peninsula} - easy to visit Caernarvon, Conway and Anglesey from there, Llandudno a bit further.

cant beleive i forgot portmeirion!
slapheadsrock, i was bred and born in north wales, bangor in fact and spent many a happy summer at aber falls.

Spacecadet · 08/04/2006 15:38

the beach at portmeirion is lovely, porthmadog is nice with the welsh highland railway extending to there now, get on the narrow gauge train there which takes you to caernarfon, then up into snowdonia to waenfaur, get off at waenfaur and visit antur waenfaur, a lovely little nature reserve with gift shop, tea room.

Karenann · 08/04/2006 15:43

Thanks SC, good tips. We were thinking of trying the narrow gauge railway - good to know it will be worth it. Looking forward to seeing snowdonia.

Spacecadet · 08/04/2006 16:40

its a nice little railway, better on a sunny day though!

merryberry · 09/04/2006 11:09

Standing on the bridge at Waterloo facing north and looking down the thames east and west. Inspirational.

edam · 09/04/2006 12:07

Second Merryberry's post - have always loved that view. And agree with people who have mentioned the Peak District. The moors around Hathersage are wonderful - just places you can breathe and clear everything out of your head. Also Winnats Pass near Castleton. Very strange place but eerily beaiful.

Love the Pennines outside the Peak District too - Woodhead pass and Emley Moor.

And the area between Snowdonia and the sea, around Porthmadog and Penrhyndeaudreth (sp?). Just looking at those mountains in one direction and the sea in the other is very, very special. Blaenau Ffestiniog is beautiful in a very strange way as well - the heaps of slate spoil give it an almost lunar landscape.

kipper22 · 09/04/2006 12:09

Bath - standing overlooking the weir and Pultney Bridge

edam · 09/04/2006 12:11

Oh, didn't see Portmeirion post. There's a stone ship down by the hotel that we loved playing on when we were little. Used to be a sort of fort-style wooden adventure playground in the woods - don't know if it is still there. Tbh when we were that little, anywhere we could race around with lots of little paths kept us entertained so Portmeirion was fab. Also take them on the Ffestiniog steam railway. NIce views for you and entertaining for them (especially seeing the double engines which face forwards and backwards).

Mumbojumbo · 09/04/2006 12:13

Just come back from a weeks holiday in West Wales - the beach at Pembrey (Cefn Sidan) is lovely as is Tenby. Beautiful day last Wednesday - no clouds and very few people - fantastic!

Pruni · 09/04/2006 12:20

Really impressed by how many of you rate Wales so highly.
(And Scotland but I'm v biased.) Smile

Pembbrokshire

here (caerleon) just by the Amphitheatre on a sunny or snowy day

going into Cwmbran to Asda, when above the houses you can see the mountain towering above you, reminding you how transient the houses, cars and people are in comparison

The Quantock Hills in Somerset, overlooking the sea

Isle of Wight, Nodes Point beach, on a sunny evening when the sun is going down watching the sailing on the Solent

haven't been to Scotland despite a scottish soinding second son's name, but have told DH I'd comsider relocatingt here after qualifying. I find I have a desire to get more and more isolated.

PutAPeachyInYourSimnelCake · 09/04/2006 12:43

Almost forgot- the Burren in County Clare- not in th UK but near enough to get to and so beautiful. Dh and kids never beeen there can't wait to take them

welshboris · 09/04/2006 12:52

Very lucky as I live in Swansea, so am only a a drive away from Gower, Tenby and Llangenith.

Saundersfoot town is my personal favourite
