As the original thread is reaching its limits I’ve started a new one for those still wanting advice/support on this crazy journey.

me and DD went to watch the third year GSA MT performance of Young Frankestein. It was really as good as any west end performance I have seen. Everyone was insanely talented. This really brought home that talent is the baseline. It’s probably the “X” factor, suitability for the role, knowing the right people and being in the right place at the right time that matters……..

I would love to have seen the same young people perform the same show at the start of their first year to see the value addedness of drama school in terms of performance ability.

i can definitely see it in my daughter during her BTEC MT journey

That's good to hear - I am going on Saturday to watch. That cohort is fabulous, and the show is minus a few students who are already in professional work.

Truetoself · 04/06/2026 05:40

@Biscuitsneededyes we watched one of them in High Society the week before

Truetoself · 04/06/2026 12:11

@Biscuitsneededwould the YP who have left for work have completed their degree? Isn’t the third year performance a pre requisite?

This is the great thing about the cohort being so small and select. They do 4 shows between November and June of final year. Everyone is in the first and the last one, and then they are in one other. It means everyone gets a really good role in at least one show and they get to be in three full, public productions. To be honest I think they have almost all signed with agents by this stage, so this current show is possibly less about that and more a final, joyful celebration. Assessments of performances could be done on one of their earlier shows this year, or even on their professional performance if the staff can get there. My understanding is that there is a date in Spring after which they are allowed to be auditioning for professional work and it is understood they may need to finish early to start rehearsals/performances if they are successful in booking a job. They will still get their degree. It's a similar deal at places like Arts Ed as I understand it.

theatrekidmum · 04/06/2026 19:10

Leeds Conservatoire said that they sometimes use the professional performance as the assessment - they will speak with the director and look at the work put in by the student in the same way they would with their own productions. Not always, but where it fits in and is appropriate, so I would assume that sometimes this is done by other drama schools.

There’s still loads of accommodation left on the sites I’m on so don’t worry, they haven’t flown like I thought they would

Oh amazing! I was trying to convince my son to go for the shows but he’s had other plans in mind! Maybe next year…..

Truetoself · 07/06/2026 08:51

Has anyone been to suowcases at different schools? It would be interesting to see if the standards are different- my personal feeling is they are not (but I haven’t been to more than one)

Newgirls · 07/06/2026 09:30

We went to 3 shows. It was amazing to see all the talent. It was interesting to get a vibe of a place and the size of cohort in a show and how they handled it. All were very good. It did put my dd off one place - as they took themselves very seriously apparently. I think it’s a matter of taste, environment and ultimately where / if you get an offer!

Newgirls · 07/06/2026 09:31

I’d say standards all very high / the same.

Newgirls · 07/06/2026 09:35

Thinking about it now - it was interesting in that one cohort seemed much older than others - rada. No surprise as I’m sure people apply for years.

Wrensweet · 07/06/2026 10:27

We have just been to the final showcase for East 15 cert acting course....
Just wow..blew our minds. What a talented bunch. So diverse just working together so well. Physical theatre, musical theatre, dance, combat, contemporary and traditional just a few examples of what we saw. Just amazing!!!!!

Bargainhunterliz · 07/06/2026 10:51

I’m hoping I can get to see some of this next year when my son has done year one of BA Acting, sounds great!

Newgirls · 07/06/2026 10:58

Be prepared that we were only allowed to see final years shows. We didn’t see any first year shows. They mostly perform to the other students. Various reasons I think - to let them grow and experiment. Also not to get poached before course ends!

Unfortunately, final year shows regularly seem to be the only ones available to the public. Other years are usually internal only. I'm gutted not to be able to see my daughter in her Y1 show. She's been cast as a main part. There are 25 on her cohort and they've split the main parts between Act 1 and Act 2.
I was lucky to be able to go and see her Cert show last year. However, they've now made even that internal only, so this year's parents weren't able to go and see it. I think it is also partly cost cutting, as well as the reasons cited by Newgirls.

That’s useful to know and bear in mind - thanks! Guess I’ll have to wait 3 years!

Thanks for helping set my expectations! Looks like I’ll be waiting a good 3 years then doesn’t it……

Newgirls · 08/06/2026 18:14

its a shock after seeing them in everything since childhood! But I guess all part of them being students and becoming independent 😭

Truetoself · 08/06/2026 21:10

Hmm interesting- if they were going to an ordinary uni and in a drama club, you can watch all their performances. I think it’s something about drama schools wanting to only show the end product to the world

Wrensweet · 09/06/2026 14:54

Any one heard about any movement or updates on waiting lists please?

I've heard of some on Bird, Conti, GSA, Guildhall so far

Wrensweet · 09/06/2026 21:14

Is this recently?

Mcmumager · 09/06/2026 21:32

I know someone offered places at Conti and bird off the reserve lists in the last 2 weeks
