So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

The picture immediately above is a typical sized room & storage. The photo I posted on 23/8 was for an extra large postgrad room which was huge. You may not want to leave much in the kitchen in case your stuff gets jumbled up or borrowed.

Well you better cancel them.

Yes will do

OldYorkMum · 04/09/2025 17:51

It says electricals are not recommended. Doesn’t say they are banned. Kettles and toasters are usually provided. DD took a smoothie maker I think, and others had toastie makers.
Don’t miss the PAT testing session though, to check it is safe.

GoodNamesOnly · 04/09/2025 20:21

Just checking in, my DD is joining this year too. Not long to go now! She is in Halifax.

recruitretain · 05/09/2025 22:02

My niece has been chatting away today to her new house mates, very well organised by the Uni, Seems to have a good blend and nice young people

Edited

oh yes, that’s what my yp told me I siad they are banned, then I looked it up and it’s only not reccomended
so will only take a sarnie toaster and maybe airfryer

GreatCreatures · 06/09/2025 08:10

Chat on DD's block hasn't taken off, just a handful have said hello. It's not for everyone I guess.

The College webinar was very good the other day. I actually turned it off after a while as I had other things to do, but the College Manager was incredibly patient with all the questions some of which were pretty bonkers. She gave off 'kind and sensible' vibes which is exactly what you want.

Speaking to someone yesterday there was 5 air friers in their house and ended up 3 never used

Lemintonic · 06/09/2025 11:37

DD took an air fryer last year....most people did!
I can't believe she's going back to start year 2 tomorrow - be ready, it all goes in an instant...

DDs chat is quite quiet as well but I think it’s fine. Some are more chatty in real life!

My DC have not had contact from flat mates and have said they'd prefer to just meet people face to face when they get there.

OldYorkMum · 06/09/2025 18:48

It may be that the chat has informally moved off the official platform to elsewhere, like WhatsApp or Snapchat. Your YP may have to ask.

HelliboreHelen · 10/09/2025 10:01

Oh my goodness. Got an email yesterday from the accommodation office saying that works will be taking place Sept-Dec on the accommodation block my kid is going to be living in. Scaffolding will obstruct views from kitchens and bedrooms but they will attempt to "keep noise to a minimum". They are putting solar panels on the roof.

I don't know why they couldn't do this over the Summer and why they have not offered a small rebate for the MOST expensive rooms available in that college.

ARrggghh.

Which halls is this work happening to? Thanks

Vanburgh - I don't know if there are other buildings this is happening to as well, only the specific accommodation we have contracted to pay for.

SockFluffInTheBath · 10/09/2025 15:53

DD found the chat for her building/flat. So far just other young women in her flat, they seem nice.

@HelliboreHelen i can’t imagine they will be working too long a day, so hopefully it won’t be very intrusive,

I expect you're right. Its just a bit galling when there's so much to pay for this accommodation and they had the entire place empty over the summer when they could have done it (better weather too!)

GoodNamesOnly · 10/09/2025 17:37

I imagine there is a year round programme of works in a big place like a university, so it is just bad luck when it lands on you. I visited in August and saw scaffolding on some buildings then. Still annoying though, and I will be annoyed if it happens to my DD!

Is everyone set for the weekend? I can't believe it has come around so soon! 😢

SockFluffInTheBath · 10/09/2025 17:55

@GoodNamesOnly this week is flying by.

Dearover · 10/09/2025 21:05

We had a 51 week let, paying £210 per week. Maintenance work was inevitable throughout the let. It sounds as though this project is longer than the summer holidays, so at least they've picked a time when days are short, students are in class or in the library and there aren't exams. Jan/Feb or May/June would be more annoying.

Scaffolding on the entire building for 3 months is not "maintenance" !

@HelliboreHelen
Good job your DC is not going to Exeter - they are demolishing, refurbishing and building new!
