So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

@HelliboreHelen gently, do you think this is upsetting you so much because your DS is leaving? The scaffolding should be of little consequence to him. These things happen, try not to make a big deal of it to him. I think we’re all a bit more sensitive at the moment.

No, I'm very glad he's leaving. He just turned 19 and it's about time. I am just outraged at the timing and the cost. 10,000 pounds for a tiny room in a college with an ensuite bathroom is one thing, but when they cover it with scaffolding and banging, it feels a bit like a massive piss take (although, to be fair it clearly already is one). 😀

Halls are very expensive, I quite agree. My eldest’s halls at UEA was more than DD’s room at York, but I’m bracing for her second year.

HelleboreHelen Assess the situation when your DS has moved in, to see if they are affected. Having scaffolding obscuring the window may reduce light available, and potentially noisy work going on is intrusive. You may have a case to push for a reduction.

I'm already all over it like a nasty rash...

DD emailed student support services to say she will miss the first 2 days of lectures for her gran’s funeral, how does she contact the lecturers, get the notes etc. Got an email back saying ‘understand as an international student your flight is late…’ and the email addresses of everyone in her department. Not impressed. Thinking she should have gone to UEA with her brother.

A lot of universities have one or two disorganized admin people, if not totally chaotic lecturers. I wouldn't dismiss the entire institution based on the snafu of one person.

Your DD should phone the dept office and speak directly to them. They will then be able to inform all teaching staff.

OldYorkMum · 12/09/2025 10:31

Does her timetable say the lectures are recorded?

She hasn’t mentioned this, will get her to check, thank you

HelliboreHelen · 12/09/2025 13:31

I have been following York on insta. Just saw a post about the Derwent lifts being "out" while they are fixed. Apparently there's a webpage dedicated to campus "disruptions"

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 12/09/2025 19:46

Can’t wait until Sunday.

SockFluffInTheBath · 12/09/2025 21:41

They driving you crackers @Ritasueandbobtoo9 ?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 13/09/2025 04:32

No, I love a long drive and curious to see what York University is like.

wizzler · 13/09/2025 05:50

Dd moved into Anne Lister yesterday. Went very smoothly. Loads of helpers around , no queues. Extremely well organised

HelliboreHelen · 13/09/2025 08:23

My DS is in his room in Vanburgh. He closes his curtains 24/7 so is not bothered by the scaffolding anyway.

@wizzler has your DD met her flat mates yet? My DS has not, he's not sure anyone else is there yet.

SockFluffInTheBath · 13/09/2025 14:40

Just dropped DD. The dogs made the college instagram which she loved. I thought the system of current students with trolleys was brilliant, apparently the record today is 8 trolleys!

HebeJeeby · 14/09/2025 08:20

@BlueBirdOnAWire I just looked up York on the latest Complete University League tables and it is 12th in 2026, so not sure about the Guardian and what they judge universities on. That’s quite a drop.

The Guardian tabled have always been a bit weird- lot of discussions on here previously!
York is 5th for DDs subject in the CUG this year. Last year it was around 10 in the CUG and the Times guide but around 35 in the Guardian. Lots of the universities above it I had literally never heard of.

exactly. The guardian guide is so out of whack as to be discounted completely.

Edited

isn't It crazy how all the guides vary so much, I’m confident this is the right place for our yp though so all good

Dearover · 14/09/2025 11:15

The only ones which don't move from year to year except amongst themselves are Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews & LSE.

The Guardian rankings are based on things like student happiness & jobs, which must reassuring for some of the less well known, more vocational placed. York has been a truly lovely place for my DD to spend her postgrad time. I imagine some of the drop relates to grumbles about rising costs and uncertainty last year when the books were less balanced than they are now.

The car in front of us was up to six trollies when we left...how the hell was all of that going into one room and a kitchen cupboard?

londoncalling1989 · 14/09/2025 12:05

I thought we had a lot on Friday with 4!

Hey have you guys seen how much York has dropped in the guardian uni rankings ? Dropped to 38th
https://www.theguardian.com/education/ng-interactive/2025/sep/13/the-guardian-university-guide-2026-the-rankings

Not really interested tbh. Like the others have said it depends what they’re measuring. DD picked York for the course content, and the feel she got on the open day. If she wanted bragging rights she could have gone somewhere ‘better’. There’s a lot to be said for them being comfortable and happy.
