So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Yes, I can't see anything that's actually dirty? It looks like one person's items ready to go home (was basically the state of my daughter's kitchen stuff when we arrived to take her home). If the rest of the kitchen was in a state, then surely at least some of that's down to your daughter (particularly if she is the last one there)?

HebeJeeby · 03/07/2026 09:02

I’m not sure my daughter can be held responsible for other people’s pizza boxes, dirty plates and cutlery left on tables and rotting food left on her flatmates shelves in the fridge/freezer. She has been home for 3 weeks now and we just went up to collect her final few bits and pieces. Her flatmates have completely moved out in the meantime and some have left these items behind.

No, but that's not what your picture showed, so you can't blame people for wondering what the issue was.

Hopefully your DD is living with people next year that are more responsible and that she can talk to about cleaning standards expected.

That wasn’t my picture, that was posted by recruitretrain. I was commenting upon my DD’s halls kitchen. To be fair most of DD’s flatmates were great it was just one or two that had less stringent hygiene standards. I know it’s right of passage for students to be messy but I just felt for the cleaners who are left with the mess due to thoughtlessness.

To be fair, all that stuff on the table actually looks clean? Like someone has pulled it out of the cupboards to be discarded / taken away.

We spend 2 hrs cleaning it that’s why !!!

It’s only clean after we sorted it
we didn’t feel right discarding it
the Kitchen was in a disgusting state
our YPs stuff was all cleaned up and put away
we washed all that stuff up and cleaned down all the sides

Sadly some kids are just not brought up properly

it’s utterly disrespectful to leave all that dirty lying around

When are your young people going back, and how are you and they feeling about it all ?
Mines going back around start of Sept
Very excited about going back
, said it's liek the excitement now but without the nerves

FreddyFatso · 23/07/2026 07:41

@BlueBirdOnAWire That sounds perfect, excited but not nervous. Mine is going back on Sept. 16th. Their private halls tenancy starts Sept 12th so it's time to get acclimatized, settled in etc before term kicks off on Sept. 28. The hall promises some optional social activities, like film night etc, which I was surprised but glad to hear.

Oh never thought of private halls for second year ? Does it work, put cheaper? As we've already paid 2,2k on rent this summer, not being used

OldYorkMum · 31/07/2026 18:06

DD has been in private halls for final year (Masters) so we opted for 51 week contract. But 44 weeks is also an option if you don’t need the summer, albeit the weekly rent is higher. Can also reserve as a group. I think it’s an option worth considering, as it’s good quality, bills included etc.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/07/2026 18:08

Yes, private are great, 44 week contracts no hassle.

Thanks for info
I might consider this next year esp if you can reserve as a group
I think my dds house is about 180 per week
starting end of June

My son is going into Fusion. I will come back and update if you like, when I know more. I know that both Fusion and Student Castle are university approved (they appear on the university list of private rentals).

The cheapest weekly rent is 225. And the shortest rental was 44 wks as someone previously said. This includes all bills, the on site gym and free laundry. Previoiusly he was paying 5 pounds a week for laundry on campus and I think around 30 pounds a month for the gym. So that's 50 pounds a month saved / included in costs, whichever way you care to look at it.

We don't know who his flat mates are yet but they try to combine same uni / subject / years apparently. So some flats will be YorkSt.John and others Uni of York. Etc

Yes please, update me what you think to it sounds good

GoodNamesOnly · 12/08/2026 07:51

I don't think private halls work out cheaper, from what I can find. Might be better for other reasons, of course. I think my DD is looking forward to going back. She will go mid September, I imagine. It is hard to believe they are about to start second year - the time seems to have gone so fast.

GreatCreatures · 12/08/2026 10:08

Yes, it looked to me like a 44 week let in private would be similar to an average 'with bills' price in a shared house. My DC and friends wouldn't use a gym. But I could definitely see them using private in certain circumstances. It's good to have the choice available.

redskydelight · 12/08/2026 11:34

It looks like the cheapest (and none currently available) option for Fusion is £228 a week for a 44 week contract. That's £10,032 a year. For comparison purposes, that works out £193 over 52 weeks. Which means that some shared houses will be cheaper and some more expensive. So from a cost perspective alone, I don't think it makes a huge amount of difference. I suspect the main difference is whether your YP has a set of friends that they are comfortable to share with and whether they prefer the more sociable "shared house" setup or would rather be in a more structured environment more akin to university run accommodation. Also, if they have a York based job then they will probably want a 52 week tenancy.
