So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

It seems to me that students opt for the best they can afford and as Constantine is expensive say compared to Halifax then there is a natural division. I don’t agree with it as I expect uni to be a leveller but means still make a big difference unfortunately.

Lemintonic · 25/08/2025 07:20

Yes. Sorry if I've derailed a bit..that was my dd. She had a very rough time in constantine but that was unfortunate. It is the most expensive and possibly why there is a bit of divide perhaps in the pricier ones. However! She absolutely loves the university, the city and her course so that was only part of the first year!
She's now sharing with friends for the second year - student housing is also insanely expensive there! I think that's true of a lot of universities now though. They're paying 875 a month each which seems fairly average.
She can't wait to get back though Grin

@Lemintonic
It is good to hear that things have turned out well. Really it’s a lottery who you live with and that makes a difference to the experience.

I don't think it's fair to dismiss an entire college as "cliquey" based on one story, but I do remember the thread about the state school girl who found herself in a flat with rich private school kids who left her out and that was not good at all.

There are a handful go from DC’s school each year, and it’s standard feedback. I’m sure there are perfectly lovely girls in there too, but as in life generally you only hear about the bad.

Do you think it is connected to the newish trend of school friends attending the same uni together?
When I was at York there were 3 boys from a certain private school in my corridor (we had corridors then). They were very tight and one of them was an enormous snob, but another one was gregarious and keen to mix it up. By the end of 3 yrs they'd all drifted apart, but there was clearly some need at the start to sort of group together that way.
Having said that, the percentage of private school kids attending York is much lower now than it was back then in the Stone Age.

Money follows money - East colleges do have the reputation of being cliquey. West have a more mixed intake, and dare I say it, attract more down to earth types that aren’t bothered about en-suites and fancy rooms.

Possibly, please ignore my unreasonable comments, there’s a lot going on at home at the moment, and I need to just shut up and sit in the corner.

DD has her pink plates and towels now, so very excited. I think everything will be pink…

ClearFoundation · 26/08/2025 16:02

My DD logged into the York app today to sign up for Freshers activities to discover she's banned from everything on offer at her college because she is not 18 til December.

DD was put in a flat last year with another Oxford post grad, so perhaps they do try to match them to a certain extent. The others though couldn't have been from further afield (geographically). She ended up in a lovely friendship group with her flatmate and a couple of others from another college, alongside what feels like the entire tennis club.

@SockFluffInTheBath Command hooks are a good call for hanging up the pink fluffy towels. I think DD had one broken hook on the back of the ensuite door

Dearover · 26/08/2025 16:07

@ClearFoundation there will definitely be alcohol free events she can sign up for. Tell her not to worry. They probably haven't got round to adding them yet. There is a huge pub crawl, but she will be able to go along ticket free as the pubs are all still open to the public.

Thank you @Dearover Yeah. She was pissed off for about 5 minutes.
I do remember seeing people getting drunk and falling all over the place when I went up there for Freshers week, throwing up over the bridges etc. I literally spent the week in Fairfax house with 3 other students making dinners and ignoring all the events. It did us no harm at all.

DD was all over the place her first term! We'd done our absolute best to try and advise about money and a large amount suddenly being available , and rent.... and food....but they still managed to go mad and spend loads on freshers stuff and 'freedom' 😄She'd also worked all summer so did manage to have a tiny bit of overdraft left so got through it!
It's hard to try to advise - especially somewhere like York, which is rent pricey and most other things pricey.
What we were surprised about though was that she got a bursary from out of the blue for £2000 over the first year as our income is so low.
We didn't get a full loan...but somehow were poor enough for the bursary.
I think it's under £35000 a year which is us - dh retired and me lowly NHS worker, so be aware if you are in that position. Its helped no end and this year and she gets £1500 over the next year

londoncalling1989 · 26/08/2025 16:57

DD is from a private school, noone else from her school is going and she doesn’t know anyone else. She wanted East because she was absolutely adamant she wanted self catering. She was also adamant she didn’t want one of the more expensive rooms ( or at least apply for one- i did warn her she might end up with catered on West..) and didn’t want to pay more money for the catered rooms. She was lucky and got what she wanted but it’s all so random that I think it’s a bit unfair to say that rich types go for East and also implying that private equals rich/ cliquey and state schools equal less rich/ more friendly. Can easily be the other way round and starting Uni with the generalised views about anyone isn’t helpful.

Am hoping York will be a good mix of North/ South, all school and background types , nationalities etc etc and everyone lives harmoniously! Can but hope!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/08/2025 18:04

I loved the mix of students in my first year at Uni. Surely that’s what uni is for to mix with other people.

Lemintonic · 26/08/2025 18:58

We didn't even put Connie down and she still got put there!

florizel13 · 26/08/2025 20:30

Aww my son is just going into his third year studying Maths ..Halifax College. He has loved every minute! House shares now in Osbaldwick not too far from the campus. Has a part time job in a pub and plays football for Halifax College. Night life good and not too far from Leeds! Only thing is..York is not cheap!! I've loved it too and will find any excuse to visit York! 😄 best of luck to all the new students!

holidaydreaming · 27/08/2025 19:48

Dd is moving into Alcuin in 2 weeks (eek!) but is keen to get a job to help with finances, She is looking online but if anyone whose child is there already has any advice i(particularly where might be good to look) will be gratefully received. Also she was asking me how many hours a week is good to work. I thought maybe 10 but is that too much? Tia

Dearover · 27/08/2025 20:41

Check every retailer at the Designer Outlets. DD's friend works at a store there which is very easy to get to using the bus.

holidaydreaming · 27/08/2025 21:02

That’s brilliant. Will do. Thx Dearover

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 30/08/2025 17:15

Anyone else getting carried away buying stuff?

Ha ha, not yet but we have a list. DD’s gran died this week so it’s all on pause for now. I think it’s going to be an ikea cannonball run just before the move.

Dearover · 30/08/2025 18:57

So sorry @SockFluffInTheBath. Ikea & Dunelm can wait.

PrincessFrederica · 30/08/2025 20:33

My DS is going to York for History. He has been reading all the books outlined as first term texts but literally done nothing else to prepare for departure. I am asking him to do laundry and pack...

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/08/2025 00:50

Sorry to hear about your loss. What is an Ikea Cannon Ball run? Like THE Cannonball run?
