So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Everyone settling back in OK?

SockFluffInTheBath · 25/09/2026 20:52

Mine got back yesterday but went via Cardiff Fresher’s so she’s a little worse for wear. Should be fine for Monday… 🙄

She’s got a nice house in a quiet spot with some friends, so hopefully won’t be complaining about the noise this year. Seemed to hear a lot from the upstairs flat, and her room fronted onto the garden bit where drunken folk congregated, plus the obligatory moron playing with the fire alarm.

Mine is back, hopefully a great year. This is the year that his Dad and I moved into a flat together. 34 years ago. Let’s hope he finds his true love too ❤️

No, our uni and family home split over three UK countries, we lived away from both families for many years.

Mine is back. Absolutely living her best life.

Hello, I hope all your YP have settled into their second year at York!

I now have a fresher at York - all going well so far, I think! But there is already chatter about finding a second-year house! So I just wanted to hop on this thread and ask when did your YP sign on a dotted line for their house? It just seems so early to be thinking about such a big decision with people she has only just met. We also need to make sure it is an affordable choice for us (not easy in York, I fear).

Also I think I read a post on here about private halls. What exactly are they?

She is currently living in campus accom and has made friends she says she would be happy to share with.

Thank you for any advice anyone can offer.

Mine started looking at shared houses at the end of October last year and signed end of November. (This was the transitional year for RR Act so this year things are slightly different). Despite the general buzz that you needed to get on with it this wasn't the case - unless you wanted a really large house for 9 or something where your choices are limited. There is no shortage of accommodation in York, it's just expensive. Their house have already been asked if they are going to stay next year and have verbally said yes - no price increase fortunately.
Several private hall options in York. Have no personal experience but they all look very smart from the photos. Often have extras like gyms thrown in (which would have been of no interest to my DC or their friends). Expensive per week but 44 week contracts are available which brings down the cost. Can book as a group if they want or individually, and studios with a kitchen also available.

The private halls, student roost, student castle, vita can be organised individually or with a group of friends. Very easy to book and someone always on site.

GreatCreatures · Yesterday 08:47

Should say I did encourage DC to look at private halls (no concerns with being a guarantor for housemates) but even the cheapest on a shorter contract were still over budget for some of their friends - not a huge difference but everyone has a ceiling. Their house includes bills which seems fairly standard for York so they do at least know what they are going to be paying. And they have said they feel like a 'proper family' in their 'actual house' 😀

Dd ( now 2nd yr) signed for her house at the end of november last year. She’s applying for an internship for next year and wondering what to do about housing as she won’t know if she’s got the place until late December

londoncalling1989 · Yesterday 13:52

I think DD signed early December last year. Not sure what she’ll do next year as 3 of the 5 in the house have years abroad/ placements next year but she doesn’t seem too worried as knows quite a lot of people in different groups so is sure she’ll sort something out!

MamOfTwo · Yesterday 17:48

Thank you for the replies, everyone, very helpful.

BlueBirdOnAWire · Yesterday 18:30

Yes even the uni advise to get the next year accom sorted before Xmas
