So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Sorry to hear about your loss. What is an Ikea Cannon Ball run? Like THE Cannonball run?

Thank you.

I suppose it’s a loose interpretation of the chaos and speed (nothing illegal involved!).

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/08/2025 09:54

@SockFluffInTheBath

That’s a big 10:4. I’ll be loading my rig early an keeping an eye out for a Kojak with a Kodak in a bear trap. Gotta cross county lines , already got a bear bite. Over🤣

PrincessFrederica · 31/08/2025 10:20

Does anyone whose kids have already started at York and are going back, know of a decent driving school up there?

My DS has been learning this summer and has a brilliant teacher who is really patient and worked out early on that he needed to adapt his instruction to the speed of my kid. So unlike my experience of shouty instructors.

Hoping someone can recommend a place / individual in York?

Thank you @Dearover Yeah. She was pissed off for about 5 minutes.
I do remember seeing people getting drunk and falling all over the place when I went up there for Freshers week, throwing up over the bridges etc. I literally spent the week in Fairfax house with 3 other students making dinners and ignoring all the events. It did us no harm at all.

I’m pretty sure they do another set of events at the beginning of the 2nd semester, I think they call it Refreshers?

DD is from a private school, noone else from her school is going and she doesn’t know anyone else. She wanted East because she was absolutely adamant she wanted self catering. She was also adamant she didn’t want one of the more expensive rooms ( or at least apply for one- i did warn her she might end up with catered on West..) and didn’t want to pay more money for the catered rooms. She was lucky and got what she wanted but it’s all so random that I think it’s a bit unfair to say that rich types go for East and also implying that private equals rich/ cliquey and state schools equal less rich/ more friendly. Can easily be the other way round and starting Uni with the generalised views about anyone isn’t helpful.

Am hoping York will be a good mix of North/ South, all school and background types , nationalities etc etc and everyone lives harmoniously! Can but hope!

My Niece starts Law this month at York she is from a state school and picked East as it suited her needs and nearer the law school, she is not bothered if she is with state or public school students, I think kids really don’t give a lot of credence to this, it’s about the individuals, if someone is a tit they are a tit and the school tie isn’t what makes them a tit

exactly right.

Find it strange how many parents are very over involved in the next chapter of their adult children’s lives

and how much over expressed anxiety is projected onto these young adults

let them make mistakes, let them live, let them develop

helicopter parenting breeds anxious and emotional adults

Why not just live and let live @recruitretain
No one is doing anyone any harm and if they took your advice, there'd be no mums net threads at all.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 01/09/2025 23:24

I think it is nice to have a place to chat about our precious DD or DS next adventures. Helps ease the transition.

LinkEEDin · 02/09/2025 07:53

Has anyone been given a definite arrival day yet? We know it's weekend of 12th but DS doesn't have a specific date.

The move in day should be the same day that your contract starts. You can book the time slot ( if needed- not all colleges do) via the accommodation portal - we could do that as soon as we got our College offer on results day.

i helped my niece
it seems All collages have a specific move in day
the time slots are confirmed on line when confirming
any issues ring the accommodation team

Your DC needs to log into their college email where they have information on this. They have released time slots for moving in already so they will be there for her / him to choose from. They should not be phoning at this stage - it's an IT issue, and phoning the accommodation office will just jam it up when they are trying to make last minute placements.

recruitretain · 02/09/2025 11:19

Niece just phoned to change from Saturday to Sunday owing to a family function, got through straight away
they are ok if your looking to move in after the collages official move in day
they didn’t want to entertain the day before
she got through straight away

SockFluffInTheBath · 02/09/2025 15:17

DD is going to miss the first 2 days of term for her Gran’s funeral. Less than ideal but much of life is this way at the moment. I’m hoping York’s student support is as good as UEA’s where her brother is.

BlueBirdOnAWire · 02/09/2025 19:27

Anyone's young person taking an airfryer ..?

Good luck to all the new starters and parents

BlueBirdOnAWire · 02/09/2025 19:28

Also do you all have move in slot times yet?

LinkEEDin · 02/09/2025 21:35

Thank you all. He's booked a slot now!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 02/09/2025 21:36

@BlueBirdOnAWire

There could be multiple air fryers!

DD was able to book her move-in slot on results day. She just followed the instructions in the emails sent on the 14th.

GreatCreatures · 03/09/2025 08:17

On another note I am impressed at the number and variety of events organised by the college. DD had found a list last year, but it's nice to see it in black-and-white for 2025. Pleased to see lots of 'gentle' activities as well as more active and club night options.

Air fryers are on the list of things NOT to bring.
Look on the accommodation website, they have lists.
