So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Joining this thread as my DD is starting at Alcuin and due to move in on 14th. We're all nervously excited. Doing an ikea trip tomorrow for Essentials. Good luck to all starting this year!

My DD is about to start her 3rd year at York, her 2nd year at Student Castle. They put people in the same year group together. She enjoys living there, and has made some great friends.

I am really interested to hear about this as I can't see my DD during her 2nd yr in a shared private rental with other people who may or may not be doing their washing up. Do they rent rooms mostly to Uni of York students or do they include York St. John as well, do you know?

My dc has a room in a shared flat for year 2 with friends in one of the private accommodations. It looks lovely but expensive.

This will happen anyway as it’s a shared kitchen.

True. Less chance of mice and rats in a new build though, the older houses for rent in York can be very cold in winter with inadequate heating (if any) / hot water and no adequate mangement.

At least in the 2nd year you have a vague idea about how grim your potential housemates are likely to be. No such luxury in first year halls.

Would anyone like to see an extra large ensuite room on campus? Along with a kitchen for 6.

@GreatCreatures.
Thanks. I try to avoid Facebook but it can be handy for things like this. Stuff is all ready and have booked the hotel. I’m sure they are going to have a great time wherever they land.

Just asked DD, yes they have York St John students there too. They seem to be pretty good at grouping people together, eg DD is in a flat of 3rd years from Uni of York.
The students from St John will be placed together.
There are a large number of international students too, she says there’s an American flat! DD is in a flat of 6 people with a shared kitchen. They have en suite bathrooms.
It seems to be well managed and well maintained with repairs done promptly.

I had a look at the FB page and it is entirely filled with anxious parents, most of whom are worried about finding accommodation due to the acceptance deadline passing. So it's like a larger version of one part of the discussion here, but no more insightful and not remotely reassuring. It may be that the threads have more up beat and positive tones at other times, but I didn't stick around long enough to find out.

Morning, thank you for starting this thread. DD has got a room in Anne Lister so is pleased as we thought it looked very nice when we saw it on the Open Day. We have to drop her off on 12 September which doesn’t seem very far away at all now! She’s busy shopping for her room and is a mix of excitement and nervousness.

My daughter was in Anne Lister last year and is one of the students doing the welcome and settling in on the 12th! She loved it there so hopefully all will be well for your dd too!

LinkEEDin · 24/08/2025 07:44

We did our ikea trip yesterday! I think it's really sinking in for DS that he is going.
Am I right that James College isn't catered at the weekends so they'll need some basic kitchen equipment?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 24/08/2025 07:45

Yes, it is an anxious time for some but how else does a person grow if not faced with challenge?

None of the colleges cater at the weekends. There are still places to buy food though, both on campus cafes and supermarkets, but yes I think basics are a very good idea.

@Lemintonic , I’m glad your daughter liked Anne Lister, it does look very nice, DD was a bit surprised to get it as I know lots of people put it down as one of their choices. Funny or think that our DDs will cross paths on the 12th, it’s a small world.

Lemintonic · 24/08/2025 09:28

She started in Constantine but there were a lot of....issues! It took some work but she got transferred to AL in January and loved it.
It is !

londoncalling1989 · 24/08/2025 10:06

DD also got Anne Lister and moving in on the 12th. Was her first choice and was please to get it!

londoncalling1989 · 24/08/2025 10:12

The FB group mentioned above is a bit full of ‘disappointed/gutted/fuming’ parents regarding accommodation but the side chats on the individual colleges are much more useful!
There are also lots of positive comments on all the colleges, shared bathrooms / private halls etc trying to reassure people so probably worth trying to persevere with it!

I don't think I will persevere with FB to be honest, as I don't think it has anything to offer us in a practical sense. I attended York so I know some of the basics and my DD got her accommodation sorted out on the 14th August as she has a minor physical disability. They were actually really helpful to us, but I think anyone feeling disgruntled doesn't need me turning up to say so. 😆

@ClearFoundation- mine is doing Psychology as well and was trying to convince her to apply to James as so near and thought catered might be more sociable. Was adamant wanted east and self catered but had warned her she might end up with West and catered! It worked out for her but she was aware it might not.

Oh this is exciting to hear about another Psych student.

I think I remember this (DS went off to uni last year), or maybe that was someone else. Either way Constantine does appear cliquey, DD very relieved to not be there.

I don't think it's fair to dismiss an entire college as "cliquey" based on one story, but I do remember the thread about the state school girl who found herself in a flat with rich private school kids who left her out and that was not good at all.
