Starting a thread re: performing arts applicants for 2025. If one already exists, happy to be redirected!!

Anyone pressed 'send' on their applications yet? Curious as to timelines for initial responses and to submit self tapes....

Buckling in for a long and nervous journey!

  1. I honestly don’t know.
  2. Really good, if a little pricey (compared to cities like Sheffield & Liverpool). My son lived in Joseph Stones run by Unite. It’s quite expensive but pretty well maintained & so convenient for the main building where he is based. This year he’s at One Mill Street which is popular with acting/mt students. It’s shared bathrooms (2 between 4/5) but no circuit laundry, he has a proper, free washing machine. It’s cheaper & the rooms and kitchen are really nice.

Unipol who run Mill Street are non profit making and don’t require a guarantor. They also vet/run other shared houses & private halls in Leeds. Last year when he was in Plaza run bu Unite (which I don’t reccomend) Unipol intervened as they uphold a unipol code that other accommodation in the city sign up to.

Still all up in the air here. Anyone any opinions/knowledge of Wilkes vs Performers Essex?

Truetoself · 06/04/2025 20:10

Do any of you worry your DC are not getting a typical Uni experience? Both my DS’s commented on this as DD will be applying next year. DD said she isn’t concerned about it as that’s not her priority but she wouldn’t know what she is missing.

My DC would hate the ‘typical’ uni experience. Small class sizes / campus, lots of contact time and getting to spend every day doing something they love is definitely the way forward for us.

If she’s saying it’s not a concern for her, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. Would she feel there’s more to regret by not having a shot at it? I think that would be the case here. And I’m sure there are many performing arts students having plenty of fun 😘 (work hard, play hard!)

I worry about this. My dd would have enjoyed uni too and had uni offers. But she loves her drama course and is getting loads more hours of teaching than on a traditional degree course so she’s busy, which suits her.

Mcmumager · 07/04/2025 09:41

I guess it depends where they go. My ds is at royal Welsh and I think he’s had a similar experience to uni. Living in halls, going to student union, generally just having a great social student experience. Cardiff in the sun ( like anywhere I suppose) is fab and the college backs into a gorgeous park where they can all hang out. Yes he’s in 9-6 and working really hard but doing what he loves so it’s no effort. When I think back to my more traditional uni experience his seems loads better. I had lectures with 300 students he has 20 in his class. With the classes being small they socialise with other departments and have nights out with the year 2s and 3s so it’s great for them.

It’s something I thought about when she was auditioning for places like Mountview and Arts Ed, definitely. I felt it was a huge step not being in the Uni environment. Literally like living in a bedsit going to work everyday, but to classes.

Luckily GSA was Uni but own building and I have to say she loves in and I feel it is safe. The bar on site, supermarket etc. along with Uni events.

Now she’s considering RB, which has halls, but none of the other bits, I know it’s one of her cons, as she has enjoyed the uni experience. For me, I think it’s great she’s mixing with students doing other subjects too.
