Starting a thread re: performing arts applicants for 2025. If one already exists, happy to be redirected!!

Anyone pressed 'send' on their applications yet? Curious as to timelines for initial responses and to submit self tapes....

Buckling in for a long and nervous journey!

If she gets into RB that is amazing! It’s very tough to get into their acting especially as it’s ucas so more affordable than eg rada. So they get a lot of applications. I think 18 year olds are at a disadvantage and it’s worth seeing this as a 2-3 process and this year is good audition practice. Good luck to her!

Thanks @Newgirls

She has been offered a place on the BA ETA at RB as she applied for that too but she has decided she doesn't want it and is holding out for the BA acting but if not she will probably do the foundation at E15 and then try again next year. She is also waiting on NYT results. We are fully prepared for the long haul.

Paddlinglikehell · 27/03/2025 11:46

I think we’ve come to decision time. DD still has Arts Ed MT audition next week. But not holding her breath.

After doing Foundation MT at GSA she didn’t get into their BA MT (only one did on her course, one wait listed) she had applied for Acting at two unis, but didn’t want ‘straight’ acting.

Has offer (on day) for GSA Applied & Contemporary Theatre and Rose B American TA.

What to do? Different courses but she’s looking at the acting & performance and thinks Rose B better, but… she likes it at GSA and could continue with her dance (cheap and on-site) and her singing. However, the course has had a lot of changes in the last year with new course leader etc.

Shes done all the usual pros and cons. it didn’t help! So she’s now thinking of which has more kudos in the industry!

Any thoughts?

Perhaps this is already part of your obvious pros and cons..but I think it depends if she wants to be an actor or something more in the creative/writing/devising area.
The RB course looks like it's far more performance based and probably qualifies for graduate Spotlight entry, and says they have public performances for industry professionals including agents - which is imperative if she wants to be an actor.
The GSA course definitely looks more like it is aimed at future creatives and not so much actors (although does retain some actor training). There is no mention of showcase or qualifications for Spotlight graduate entry. If she wants to keep the option of acting open to her without having to do a Master's or grinding her own route out to gain Spotlight qualifying credits, then I may be asking GSA if this course qualifies..

If they both qualify for graduate Spotlight entry, then I think it depends on which she prefers the content of.. GSA probably has a slightly higher 'status', but the course at RB is quite niche and I'm sure both would be great!

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I think the RB appeals because of the Actor training, so interesting you picked up on that.

Performing as an actor/MT is what she would like to do, so RB has the edge on acting classes, but also at GSA they do have excellent extra curricular dance classes, to keep up that side and she’s very much got a lot of clubs/social stuff happening. But you’re right, I don’t think they get a lot of performance opportunities.

Spotlight isn’t an issue, she already has a profile, having been with an agent for several years appearing in a number of dramas and soaps. I’m not sure it should still be up, as we did give the agent notice while she was at Uni, but the payment still goes out and their name is still on there, so we just left it. 😳

Interesting you say it too, but I also think she needs to speak to GSA again. Thank you

That's good she already has Spotlight. So long as she has the 2 credits she'll always be fine to step back on when she graduates. If she doesn't have an agent now (theoretically 🤣), then maybe the RB course could be better in terms of sourcing another when she does graduate, unless her child agent is also one that covers adults and would have her back. My daughter is in a similar position in that she has credits and a good adult agent already - so she's decided to give the industry a shot (whilst keeping up training and getting some additional part time qualifications) for a couple of years first, and then reevaluate options when she has seen if post 18 auditioning brings any success..
Good luck with the decision!

Bruford is very strong on acting - Stephen Graham and Jessica Gunning went there and if you look at their social media they seem to have people in every west end show including some musicals. Not aware of much dance happening though - though they do have dance studios so might be worth asking

Thank you. I wasn’t aware they had dance studios, that’s interesting.

We’re going to an open day and hopefully get some of these things answered. Also what the plans are for the placement in the US, as that looks like it may be a bit more difficult now with the current state of play.

Newgirls · 29/03/2025 12:27

Yes find out exactly where students go

How did it go? What did you think of the campus etc?

Seems to have gone well. They feel that they put their best selves out there at least! But being cautious about getting hopes up as the group was very strong yesterday (DH overheard one of the student ambassadors saying that he had no idea how they were going to choose from this lot as they were all amazing and he’d take them all!). Nobody got cut and they were all interviewed. There were 3 others on DC’s instrument, one with an offer at GSA and another also on reserve for GSA (like DC) so obviously very good too.

Loved the place and felt very at home there.

Should hear quickly as yesterday was the last AM audition.

The good news for us was that it was a lot of the same faces as at other auditions and we know some have offers elsewhere that they plan to take so there should be some movement on reserve lists when people start firming up choices. 🤞🏻

That’s the thing they have to remember. Getting through to recall & getting on the reserve lists at quality places like GSA means they ARE good enough. But there are limited places. Some of the successful applicants this year will have been unsuccessful last year.

fingers crossed for that reserve list movement.

Newgirls · 05/04/2025 14:20

The actor musos prob all apply to RB and GSA and then the colleges have to work out a mix of instruments. Same candidates prob get offers from both! Must be very tricky to work it all out and bound to be movement on the reserve lists!

Lovely they came out feeling they had done their best, if it’s the last audition too.

yiunknow they are good with those choices!

Hope you hear soon. DD is still torn between RB and GSA, we’re going for a visit to RB again on 23rd. Maybe it will be different looking round knowing you have an offer. I really liked the small campus, but she’s on Foundation at GSA so knows what to expect.

We’re all done now.

When mine had an offer she was invited to one of the y3 shows. Well worth seeing one if you can as it shows you the standards (I thought was excellent)

She’s seen the GSA show and it was very good, but not seen anything at RB and of course they’ve finished now for Easter. We live in the Northwest so travelling down to London for the campus tour after Easter. she’s driving back up to home Monday, so it feels like we’re up and down. 🙄

Newgirls · 05/04/2025 20:32

Oh that’s tricky! Good luck making the decision 👍

A couple of questions about Leeds Conservatoire for those in the know…

  1. Do they ever accept requests to defer for a year? My daughter has been offered a place on their Acting course, but is feeling she isn’t ready to leave home this year…
  2. What are the student accommodation options like (in case she does decide to go in September)? We are going to visit Leeds soon for a look around. She had her audition in London, so hasn’t visited the city yet.

Thanks.
