DD has overslept this morning - Ha, not sure if it is a problem, but good to hear she is, in fact, sleeping.

Damn cat. So didn't see him all yesterday, didn't come in last night, not here this morning when I got up. Very unusual as he usually follows us around yelling, and spends the evenings on my lap. Just came in, yelling as usual, and I cried buckets. I was so pleased to see him. I couldn't bear to loose him too, what an emotional wreck I am Grin.

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 09:08

@chopc - Bless you, can't imagine still being without a confirmed room this late. Sincerely hope Durham get their act in gear when everyone finally arrives.

@ChimneyPot - No particular restrictions at Exeter that I could see. They are encouraging everyone to wear masks indoors, and providing them at entrances to building. They have free LFT's for students to use, PCR testing on site if needed, and some vaccination pop-ups going on for the next few weeks. Other than that, full in person lectures, indoor events in pubs and clubs, and full socialising going on. We will see what occurs in the next couple of weeks. No compulsion for vaccination though. Immunity very high in that age group, so fingers crossed, nothing too dramatic happens.

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/09/2021 09:10

Oh poor you @BigWoollyJumpers you need a hug. We have a very much loved cat too so I totally understand. Glad dd is sleeping, you sound like a lovely mum, we never stop worrying about our babies do we.

Have a nice cuddle with dcat.

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/09/2021 09:13

Well today is the day. Was up till 1am last night with dd3 who was having a meltdown over some English homework. Anyway I managed to get her off to school this morning, me dh and dds 1 and 2 are going out for breakfast soon.

Then finish packing the car and off! Hoping to leave after lunch. Booked a cheap (but funky looking) hotel for tonight just outside Bristol city centre. Dd's moving slot is 11am tomorrow morning, we decided it's much more relaxing going the night before.

quest1on · 17/09/2021 09:17

BigWoolly - tell that cat he needs to behave. You’ve got enough on without his shenanigans!

Just catching up on all your updates. Chopc - have Durham still not confirmed the college? Or is it just the room type you’re waiting in. I can completely imagine at this point, you just want to visualise where he’s going and I’m sorry you’re in this position.

Bend - hang on in there and wishing you and your DD all the best this weekend. Once your DD is settled, you’ll be able to focus more in the younger one.

Chimney - those restrictions do sound a bit harsh. I really hope it’s temporary for your DD.

Good luck to anyone on the move this weekend.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 17/09/2021 09:52

Good luck @bendmeoverbackwards and I hope your DD enjoys Bristol.

@chopc I popped onto the Durham thread, DD thought it was a great uni, I can't believe that so many of you still don't know what accommodation your teenagers will be given. I thought the collegiate system and knowing what college you would be allocated back in February/March was a huge selling point for Durham. It must be very unsettling for those who still don't know.

My DD has her first lecture today. Although she is definitely coming down with something as her voice/throat sounds dreadful.
She is taking a Covid-19 test daily so I'm not worried but she was very grateful that I had packed a medicine kit and she found a throat spray last night.

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 10:00

@bendmeoverbackwards - He is missing DD Sad.

Hope your move goes well, and other Bristol mover @SeasonFinale.

Who else is moving this weekend?

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 10:05

@olliepolly - How is your DS now? Any news.

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 10:06

@Stillcrikey - Going back, see you are also off to Bristol. Hope all goes well.

Reposted as I had forgotten where some people are going

Found @chopc list again - putting it here to remind me as much as anyone else......
BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 10:09

@Tenpastseven - Assume you are off this weekend too - Good luck.

Jng1 · 17/09/2021 10:10

Spoke to DS yesterday. He sounded OK-ish. He's doing all the right things, seems to be making friends, has connected with a couple of people from his school. But he said himself it's all a bit overwhelming and I told him that it's perfectly OK for him to give himself an evening with a movie and a takeaway if that's what he fancies doing (he's been out every night so far, and is not a naturally sociable person, so this is hard work for him!). I'm secretly grateful that his flatmates sound like quite sensible, nice types and not all-night party-goers, although apparently they've already had a warning from the Accommodation wardens for propping open their door with a vacuum cleaner when they had the other flat over Grin. Think he's going to investigate the gym today and do some food shopping.
Turns out he's been using the printer he got with his DSA allowance to print out A4 posters for his noticeboard and says he thinks he might have already used up a set of ink cartridges Shock Grin.

AvocadoPlant · 17/09/2021 10:13

@bendmeoverbackwards, @Stillcrikey and everyone else moving this weekend, wishing you all the best of luck and safe travels,

AvocadoPlant · 17/09/2021 10:27

Discovered the reason DD hadn’t mentioned the taster sessions was because she wasn’t able to get a ticket to them.
I gather that a lot of second years have been attending the freshers events - makes sense given the year they had last year, but combined with the increased numbers of freshers this year, is making it very difficult to access the events.

She has a pre-booked ticket for freshers fair today so I’m hoping she will be brave snd sign up for clubs even without the tasters.

DD can be the life and soul of the party but at the same time she suffers with anxiety and panic attacks so going along and signing up for things where she doesn’t know anyone will be really difficult for her.

@Jng1 and @calculatorqueen good to read your DS have also settled in well at Exeter.

@jng1 - can I pick your brain re the printer? DD has the same/similar but says she can’t get it to access the wi-fi.

@BigWoollyJumpers did your DD go to the history meet ‘n’ greet last night? Perhaps it was a late one! Grin

jano69 · 17/09/2021 10:27

Best of luck Bristol Peeps! Hope your packing's done and you're all prepared for the journey down. Hope all goes smoothly and you deposit happy dc. x

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 10:28

Excellent use of printer. Good for raising spirits and mental health Grin.

@Jng1 DD had a movie night in with a friend last night. I think they need to have some time out too, otherwise it does all become a bit too much.

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/09/2021 10:32

@BigWoollyJumpers did your DD go to the history meet ‘n’ greet last night? Perhaps it was a late one! grin

@AvocadoPlant No she didn't. She did the daytime picnic thing a couple of days ago. She is going on the HisSoc historical pub crawl tonight though, which could be very challenging as she is not a drinker!

AvocadoPlant · 17/09/2021 10:45

Interesting devision BWJ!

Jng1 · 17/09/2021 12:00

@AvocadoPlant - not sure how much I can help on the printer front as DH helped set it up, but I wasn't aware of any problems.

Yes - DS also said the problem with the club tickets was related to loads of second years coming early to have the Freshers experience they missed last year. It's understandable, but is making things very busy.

One thing DS doesn't like is that he's in a first floor room near a path going uphill and he feels like he has no privacy so says he has been keeping his curtains closed Sad. I'm wondering if we could get him some temporary privacy film for the lower half of his window or something.

chopc · 17/09/2021 13:46

Thanks for all the messages of support re: room allocation at Durham. Yes I agree feel completely duped at this point 😔

Good luck to all those whose kids are off this weekend and nice to hear the news of those already there

Interestingly, we had a mixed group of people in our gang at Uni - some of whom didn't drink. However they were never relied upon to be the "designated" people to get us home

So We’ve done a lot of packing here today, dd off to Bristol early tomorrow and later today we’ve got to take ds for weekend respite which will be the first time in 18 months since he’s last been.

Ideally it would of been nice to take dd down the day before and stop over in a hotel, but it took a lot of organising the respite so we’re up early tomorrow for the 3 1/2 hour journey then another 3 1/2 hours back, I shall certainly sleep well.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 17/09/2021 16:06

Apparently the freshers fair was very good today. I agree the taster sessions sounded a bit hit and miss as they were tickets only and lots were sold out.

My DD was stopped by a group of girls to try out a not as popular sport which she did give a go, as she thought why not, and then ended up on their social night which was really good fun.

SeasonFinale · 17/09/2021 16:29

DS and a group of about 30 went clubbing last night and he is playing football today. Then a group are going to Tokyo World over the weekend before freshers starts on Monday. I am exhausted just hearing about it

chopc · 17/09/2021 17:11

After another chase - please to say DS got the accommodation he wanted! Hugely relieved and grateful ! Thanks for the support everyone!
