I rented a minivan in Boston yesterday and drove to Providence.
So far it is just DDs two large suitcases and all the clothes she bought since we arrived here but we will be going to Target and Walmart today.
Some people bring huge amounts to US colleges, they rent trucks and some have interior designers design their dorm look!
There are intriguing YouTube move in videos.

DD ordered a plain white dorm pack for her dorm from a company that delivered them. So white bedding, towels, laundry hamper, bin etc.

We walked up to get a first glimpse of Brown last night. It was dark but it looked lovely.

DD has been chatting to her roommate and so far so good.

I think it is starting to hit me just how far away she will be but for the moment I am concentrating on how excited she is.

Peaseblossum22 · 26/08/2021 12:55

Gosh Chimneypot it all sounds so exciting, and Providence is lovely or at least it was when I went 28 years ago! Brown would have been my dream university, she will have an amazing experience .

Just been reading my ds freshers handbook for his college and was amused by the 'what not to bring' list , number one is A level notes and number 2 is animals , which reminded me of a recent thread on here .Also no irons, printers , kettles or toasters as they are all provided and no incense or candles as they set the fire alarms off (this seems to be considered more of a problem than actually starting a fire !)
The essential list includes among other things arts and crafts (?), Netflix account details (can he continue to use ours ?), an umbrella (not sure ds has ever used one) , various different types of clothes for various events and interestingly a drying rack!

chopc · 26/08/2021 13:06

Oh sounds so exciting @ChimneyPot

I am feeling downhearted as Durham hasn't confirmed DS college yet .......

Peaseblossum22 · 26/08/2021 13:08

@chopc I'm so sorry that was insensitive of me, I really hope he hears soon

Meery · 26/08/2021 13:41

@Peaseblossum22 you seem to be ahead of us on this, as far as I know my dd has not yet got this list. Did waste paper bin feature at all, are they provided in college?

chopc · 26/08/2021 13:57

Oh don't think twice about it @Peaseblossum22

OP posts:
Peaseblossum22 · 26/08/2021 14:12

@Meery its partly because we got this far last year as well Blush but if you go to the Trevelyan College website and follow the heading 'Welcome to new Undergraduates' there is lots of info , the handbook is almost at the bottom of the page its called Freshers Handbook 2021-22.

www.durham.ac.uk/colleges-and-student-experience/colleges/trevelyan/ugwelcome/

Peaseblossum22 · 26/08/2021 14:18

@Meery , it says they empty your bins so I assume that means they provide them!

Meery · 26/08/2021 14:21

Thank you @Peaseblossum22. That’s one less thing to squeeze in the car.

Pumpkintopf · 26/08/2021 15:23

@ChimneyPot brilliant, sounds amazing! Well done to your DD for taking all this in her stride and you for being a fab supportive parent.

Did raise an eyebrow at this - Some people bring huge amounts to US colleges, they rent trucks and some have interior designers design their dorm look! - oh my goodness!! We obviously need to raise our game with the bog standard IKEA kit . In fact, as was said upthread our IKEA trip was indeed sans DS who is showing very little interest in all of this 'stuff' around moving in.

A bit like he didn't show much interest in packing his rucksack for Leeds festival until I forced the point yesterday. DH says I need to stop stepping in. I think he's right and when ds is on his own he will step up and cope, because he'll have to - and I will step back, because I won't be there. It's hard for me though!

@chopc I'm so sorry your DS still doesn't have his college allocation. Is there a deadline for them all to be notified at all?

chopc · 26/08/2021 15:34

Thanks @Pumpkintopf . Yes all will know by the 1st as per Durham info. But why did they allocate colleges in the first place only to do this?

DS also hugely uninterested

Oh i have sent him links to info about stuff he should be doing at Uni (in addition to studying and socialising). Then I plan to leave him to it. He knows he has to be off our payroll by his mid 20's so let's see how he gets on realising his ambitions

And I think I will do it as it is GCSE year for DS2 who doesn't listen to me at all and is hyper sensitive so I will be balancing walking on egg shells the whole year ....... trying to be supportive which he perceives as attacking 🤦🏽‍♀️

@chopc
It must be quite stressful not having college confirmation yet.
I hope he hears soon.

Pumpkintopf · 26/08/2021 16:03

Absolutely @chopc I don't understand Durham sometimes.

Also your DS2 sounds like my DD...

MidLifeCrisis007 · 26/08/2021 16:08

DS is in the same boat with no college allocation. It's clear that Durham has no beds left in any of the colleges and they are hoping that people will agree to defer in the next few days to free up spaces and they'll be trying to incentivise some 3rd and 4th year students to move out. It seems there is still quite a lot of accommodation available in town as I was googling it earlier so spaces will hopefully free up in colleges soon.

chopc · 26/08/2021 16:28

@MidLifeCrisis007 I thought you said it's mainly the Bailey colleges that are oversubscribed?

And the deadline for people to say if they will defer was last week.

OP posts:
Braveheart35 · 26/08/2021 16:50

I think the deadline to defer was extended? Though I can’t remember where I read that!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 26/08/2021 17:04

I did say mainly, but not exclusively! Collingwood is probably the Hill College that will be the most oversubscribed.

I'm sure the deadline to defer has been extended.

DS got an email yesterday saying he'd hear by 1st Sept (I thought it was the 2nd but it's the 1st). He's cool as a cucumber about it. Says he'd be happy in any college!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 26/08/2021 17:17

This is years old, but I doubt the trend would have changed that much, other than a new college being added into the fray! www.dur.ac.uk/resources/ug.admissions/admindocuments/admincycle1516/3-1CollegePreference-TotalApplications.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3-o9tHvQA0URZlCfDdDZsprQpPn6qYQfBZvzLWCZIpmuPJzrbR9cOAQ5U

chopc · 26/08/2021 17:24

If the deferral deadline has been extended I hope the 1st deadline won't follow in the same direction

OP posts:
Longtimenewsee · 26/08/2021 17:41

Waves @chopc. Dd also hasn’t heard which college she belongs to yet.
She seems a bit sad about it. She is obviously aware of students on TSR enrolling and talking with future college mates. I’ve told her to stop reading it now. Thank god she is busy with work atm to take her mind off it a bit!
She doesn’t even trust that she will hear by the 1st now.
All that sending out of college info and then asking them to rank them in order of preference... which of course meant dc thought about the different colleges and their favourite one perhaps even more than in previous years 🙄
Dunno about 500 quid if they move students - I deserve the £500 for having to jolly her along thus far!!! Grin

Pumpkintopf · 26/08/2021 18:08

It does seem Durham extended the option to defer -

Opportunity to defer
Finally, as a reminder, we’re offering you the opportunity to defer your place at Durham until the 2022/23 academic year. If you decide to do this, you will be guaranteed your first choice of College. The deadline for doing so has been extended to 23:59 (UK time) on Thursday 2 September.

studyatdurham.microsoftcrmportals.com/en-us/knowledgebase/article/KA-02619

@Longtimenewsee absolutely!!
£500 doesn't seem much compensation to have to move college or potentially have to be in private accommodation (do those who get their choice of college but have to live out still get the £500?)

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 26/08/2021 18:41

@ChimneyPot completely jealous of where you are in the world right now. Our honeymoon was New England in the fall. We landed in Boston and drove all over Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, and went whale watching off Cape Cod. It was all breathtakingly beautiful.

I was always shocked seeing US TV shows when they move into college and they have trucks with sofas in. Room sharing seems to be standard in lots of the colleges. There is a huge number of styling my dorm room on YouTube, not that Ds is interested in that although he did buy a couple of fake plants from Ikea for some greenery.

321zyx · 26/08/2021 18:44

DS still waiting for Durham accommodation.............!

chopc · 26/08/2021 19:00

Agree £500 won't cut it and I share your sentiments @Longtimenewsee

They should as a minimum prioritise those who firmed Durham

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 26/08/2021 19:02

I feel for everyone whose teenagers are off to Durham not knowing about their accommodation yet. Such a shame as I thought the process of knowing your college so far in advance was a real bonus. A lot of universities are having a real problem with accommodation this year and I keep reminding my DD how lucky she is to get one of her top picks.

@ChimneyPot your post sounds so exciting for your DD and very 'Legally Blonde' with the removal vans.

Another day of shopping for us today and I think m&s and Dunelm have provided most on our list.
