Real problem or is this banter about home regions

I feel this is an issue that has been a feature of universities for years

As a northerner going to an RG uni was socially difficult experience and I did try and suppress my accent.

I didn't mind friendly banter based on accent but did feel my background precluded me from certain peer groups.

Whatever this thread started out discussing... I'm not quite sure how it got to the minutiae of the oxbridge boat race crews.

This Guardian article on the same subject about Durham is interesting reading. It seems to go beyond a bit of banter.

Also I question the assumption that Northerns don't travel too far from their roots. It underestimates the invisible barriers to moving and breaking into new spaces.
