DS has mixed emotions. Glad to give up on revision, but sorry he might not be awarded the grades he might have gained. And what to do for 6 months? He’ll need to keep his maths going.

I mean what do they all do now????

Snozzlemaid · 18/03/2020 19:49

Yes, it's going to be a very long time until they study again isn't it.

HesMyLobster · 18/03/2020 20:29

Oh gosh @Kingscote that's just brought tears to my eyes.

I really do feel for all of them. It's like the next 6 months of their lives was all planned out and has just been whipped out from under them Sad

Peaseblossom22 · 18/03/2020 20:33

Ds very discombobulated , on balance I think he would rather have sat the exams and had some form of form of mitigation process. Still no offer from Durham , not likely to now because potentially they have over offered massively

Bit worried that he has no purpose now and is going to find that difficult . It’s from100 miles an hour to stop and if there’s no social contact as well that is going to hit hard .

Plus so sad that tomorrow he effectively leaves school , no leavers day or all the usual end of school events and photos etc. My youngest , I’m not ready for him to leave school . 😢

oneteen · 18/03/2020 21:30

I think I am relieved... DD shed a few tears... It all seems so sad and not a nice way to end their school years.. The last week has been quite stressful for them all and Dd would have liked to have earned her place on merit... That said she decided it was the right time to firm Warwick.

So sad to see their Summer taken away from them too but sitting exams with this daily news would not be good...

thesunwillout · 18/03/2020 21:44

Hi oneteen, I'm relieved that the uncertainty of taking the exams has stopped, but also feel like there's a void now.
Or perhaps that's just intertwined with the general surreal situation.

I was fretting the last weeks as DD has been very ill and off college.
This isn't quite how I expected the situation to resolve itself re her having missed so much, in a way there's relief but I'm also so proud and know she'd been doing work online even thru the illness.
I'm sure we can all be comforted in the knowledge, that since this thread began, our kids have put in so much effort.
When the time comes to further their education, we know they really tried.

Love to all xx

aibutohavethisusername · 18/03/2020 21:48

DD is absolutely gutted as she has worked her socks off. She has still to firm and insure though.

Hoghgyni · 18/03/2020 22:23

DD was the same. This week she has lost her job at the tennis club, had all matches & coaching stopped, realised that the holidays she had worked do hard to pay for will almost certainly go ahead and now she has lost the structure of her school day. This was not the end to her school days that she could ever have imagined.

However, within minutes of ths announcement she firmed Oxford and insured York for PPE.

Serin · 18/03/2020 22:47

PeaseBlossom, I'm sorry your DS still hasn't heard from Durham. I feel invested in his story and so wanted him to get an offer. Fingers crossed for him.
Our DS is upset that it looks like Friday will be his last day at school. He lives miles away from mates, we are quite isolated really. It looks like it's going to be a boring summer for him with little hope of a job now. We have already cancelled his 18th party
next week.

Peaseblossom22 · 18/03/2020 22:53

Oh Serin I also feel for your ds . As a pp said it feels like a summer ( at the very least had been stolen him) In his head I think he has written off Durham, there are at least another 8 or9 also waiting at his school so he’s not alone . He has other offers he is very happy with but he also has no A levels or any way of knowing how he will get those results .

oneteen · 18/03/2020 23:27

@peaseblossom22 I would encourage your DC to be bold... Contact the courseadmissions director at Durham and say that he hasn't received an offer and in view of whats going on with exams he would just like to confirm If he were made an offer he would firm Durham. Dont go to Admissions... Go to the Course Admissions Director... There will be lots of DC firming Oxbridge very quickly...therefore an ideal opportunity to shout out to Durham.

Ironoaks · 18/03/2020 23:41

DS is taking the news better than I would have expected. He intends to keep studying the rest of the course and do past papers as originally planned. He is hoping that it will be possible to start university this autumn, in which case his A-level knowledge will need to be secure.

I feel a bit sad that he won't be able to go in to say goodbye to his friends, but he seems quite pragmatic.

NetballHoop · 18/03/2020 23:49

DT's are both quite upset. Friday will be their last school day and everything they have worked towards for the last two years will be down to what a teacher assessed them as weeks/months back.

KingscoteStaff · 19/03/2020 07:36

DS firmed Durham and insured Manchester last night.

JufusMum · 19/03/2020 08:25

DD gone into school today, apparently amongst the cohort they are organising some kind of leavers celebration tomorrow at a local restaurant. Feel so sad for them 😢

Lightuptheroom · 19/03/2020 10:06

Ds was due to be in college until tomorrow, this has now ended extremely abruptly because they have had a suspected case of coronavirus, so it's all over in the next 10 minutes! He's firmed York and insured Aberystwyth, which is unconditional, so he has his uni place regardless, just don't know where it will be. He's worried as hasn't really been working properly for the whole course, though he did do the Aberystwyth entrance exams and scored very highly so that may be useful.

TheDrsDocMartens · 19/03/2020 10:28

Dd2 v upset this am to go in for potentially last day. Her school was just having exam years in from yesterday so bit of a confusing stop.

Peaseblossom22 · 19/03/2020 10:31

Ds cohort all in fancy dress determined to keep smiling . They are known as one of the nicest year groups in the school , never had any real problems very supportive and cohesive so they are very focused on supporting each other. Very sad about no leavers day , it’s a big thing with parents as well and teachers and is always so happy, they had been talking about it for years ! We were going straight off on holiday afterwards and then they were interailing But we have to look forward.

He will be fine I think if based on mocks, his GCSEs are straight 9s so that will stand him in good stead but there is a lot of uncertainty about what the grades will be based on, Will they carry on working at what point will they draw a line ?

aibutohavethisusername · 19/03/2020 11:44

DD hasn’t had college since Tuesday so she is meeting some friends today as a kind of farewell thing.
She is also planning to go to Waterstones so she can read through the summer. As well as seeing if she can get extra work. She works in a supermarket do I think that she will.

oneteen · 19/03/2020 12:13

Dds cohort having a PJ day tomorrow... The school trying to encourage them to continue with remote lessons... Maybe interesting if the school decide their A level grades are conditional on continuing remote lessons...I think Dd would probably opt in anyhow so that there is some sort of structure to the day.

Dd plans to do lots of cooking and reading in preparation for September ( If things have calmed down by then...) Thankfully they held back on booking their holiday.

HuaShan · 19/03/2020 18:57

All Y 13's sent home today from school slightly unexpectedly. DS phoned and said they were all going to the pub for a final hurrah. He is putting a brave face on it all but is upset at the thought of not being able to do his exams (how could we imagine we would be saying that a few weeks ago). At the moment he's trying to work out how to use his day. I have suggested sticking to normal lesson times during the next 2 weeks and doing all the online work set.

I'm another one who never got around to booking a holiday.....

MillicentMartha · 19/03/2020 20:29

I have a short holiday booked in July with DS2 and DS3. Not sure whether to cancel and lose deposit or pay the balance and hope for insurance payout. Will probably cancel.

DS3 is going in tomorrow for his last day. Will do the last ever doorstep photo. Nothing else seems to be planned. Prom is cancelled, last day BBQ in May is off obviously off, last parents’ evening tonight was cancelled on Monday.

No communication from Manchester as yet. They probably know as much as we do.

I’m glad this thread is almost over. The title is now a bit inappropriate. 🙄

thesunwillout · 19/03/2020 20:38

Just to say, some students who have firmed have been getting unconditional offers by email.
