French via FaceTime if she feels up to it?

aibutohavethisusername · 18/03/2020 08:27

DD’s college has closed to students for the rest of the week. Staff working on action plans for total closure, making sure everything is in place.

They haven’t finished the course for Politics though.

I have come down with a flu-like illness, so DS is now on 2 week quarantine. He is going to self-teach the remaining material on the specifications; some of his teachers are sharing resources on Google classroom to assist with this. He is concerned about missing core practicals, but his teacher thinks he has completed the necessary competencies, which is a relief for him.

thesunwillout · 18/03/2020 10:28

So turns out DD has glandular fever.

It's a shit show!

oneteen · 18/03/2020 10:32

Sorry to hear so many DC and mums not feeling great.. So much uncertainty and so much stress on everyone.

South Korea look as if they now have control of the virus.. Let's cross fingers that we get control quickly too..

Ironoaks · 18/03/2020 14:15

thesunwillout sorry to hear that. Hope she starts to feel better soon.

thesunwillout · 18/03/2020 14:54

@Ironoaks

Thankyou so much x

Hi
Panicking here a bit today.
DS has almost certainly decided on Sheffield Hallam as his first choice for Engineering. Went for an offer holder visit last weekend, chose accommodation he would like to apply for etc. DH said in the presentation they said 12 hours per week contact time. We thought about this and emailed to check today as it's very low for Engineering where 16 to 20 hours plus is the norm. Sheff Hallam have confirmed its correct by email. I have had a quick ring round his other possible choices and they are all 18 hours minimum. It's a practical course and he is keen to go somewhere he feels he can ask easily if he's got question. It's a confidence thing really but best to get off to a solid start I feel.
UEA and Derby both have good courses and have made realistic offers?
Thoughts anyone?

Flipping heck! A level exams cancelled. Shock 😮

OP posts:
oneteen · 18/03/2020 17:41

Yep.. The right decision..

DuckyMcDuck · 18/03/2020 17:43

So they've cancelled them but he doesn't want to say have a bloody clue what they will do instead. Not sure how that is supposed to reassure the kids

LIZS · 18/03/2020 17:49

Exams in May and June cancelled, not sure that will necessarily mean cancelled altogether.

oneteen · 18/03/2020 17:57

Well hopefully by using the words that the DC will get the qualifications they need means No A levels exams at all..

Dd firmed Warwick 5 minutes ago..

MillicentMartha · 18/03/2020 18:16

Best guess among friends is some formula combining predicted grades, mocks and GCSEs.

MillicentMartha · 18/03/2020 18:17

Which isn’t great for DS. His AS levels were really good, though.

Frostyskies1223 · 18/03/2020 18:18

See announcement from Welsh Ed on Oxbridge thread, Eng expected to follow.

MillicentMartha · 18/03/2020 18:23

Thanks @Frostyskies1223. So as we thought, some sort of formula.

OP posts:
oneteen · 18/03/2020 18:34

@millicent... Your DS will be fine.. They will also probably use AS levels too

PBLR · 18/03/2020 18:40

Problem solved by A level announcement thing. DS has firmed UEA after discussion re the low hours'at Sheffield and keen to avoid the rush on UCAS!

HesMyLobster · 18/03/2020 19:12

How have all you dc reacted to the news?

DD is absolutely horrified at the prospect of no exams.
She's worked so hard and really wanted the chance to show it.

I'm guessing there will be a lot of mixed emotions.

DuckyMcDuck · 18/03/2020 19:19

@HesMyLobster
DS is the same, he has worked his socks off and has good predicted grades and mocks but he wanted to prove to himself that he could do it.

We're all in shock here, stunned!

specialted · 18/03/2020 19:27

Ds elated but think it will soon sink in what a lot of time and hard work he's put in to the last two years. He has an unconditional and really struggles with exams but not sure how it will pan out for everyone .

specialted · 18/03/2020 19:29

Dd at med school been told uni year has now finished. Exams could be in August. Not sure how practical exams will be carried out. This has a huge impact on absolutely everyone .

KingscoteStaff · 18/03/2020 19:41

DS sitting here still working on his Pre U coursework essay ‘because I think it could be a really good piece, even if no one wants to read it...’

Snozzlemaid · 18/03/2020 19:41

Dd is gutted. She's worked so hard this year.
She's quite stressed with how this is all going to pan out now. I've reassured her that they're all in this together so will all work out ok, but it's the not knowing.
Should they just stop working and revising now? Feels strange that this is the end of her time at college.
