We have our last applicant day on Saturday (Surrey)then ds really needs to decide his firm and insurance (Southampton and Portsmouth so far). Any advice for the next step, applying for funding and accommodation?
Is it quite straightforward??

MillicentMartha · 11/03/2020 22:40

DS has just firmed Manchester and insured Birmingham. At last!

@SouthCoastShell DS has just applied for accommodation at both. We trawled through their websites, found the accommodation types he preferred and applied online. Manchester allowed 5 preferences which they all weighted equally (unfortunately) whereas Birmingham allowed 6 preferences which he could rank 1-6. They both guarantee some uni accommodation for firm but don’t guarantee for insurance, but still worth applying as they don’t allocate until your application becomes unconditional. ie after results.

I know Southampton uni have lots of uni accommodation so it’s generally fine even if it’s your insurance. Southampton was DS’s 3rd favourite. My friend’s DS is at Portsmouth and is enjoying it there.

Student finance is fairly easy to apply for. If you know you won’t be eligible for more than the minimum maintenance loan of around £4000 you don’t need to supply your financial information. Not sure what the cut off is, but there’s a calculator on the website. Then there’s a sliding scale up to the maximum maintenance loan of nearly £9000 dependant on the household income. This includes all taxable income of the parents or if single/divorced the resident parent and any live in partner/spouse of the resident parent. Taxable means similar to filling in a tax return, salary from P60, taxable savings, dividends, taxable rental income etc. This is from last year’s tax year. So April 2018 - April 2019 for 2020 start.

Your child fills in their details with the SLC and gives your contact details as supporting their application. You then get emailed to register with SLC and have an online form to fill in. If you need to provide any supporting information by post they should email to ask, but IME it’s a good idea to check your log in from time to time in case they don’t email and some piece of required information is holding up the application.

I’ll check out some links.

Thank you so much for the advice, first time mum here, can I ask what IME and SLC stand for?

errorofjudgement · 12/03/2020 06:54

IME - in my experience
SLC - Student Loans Company

MillicentMartha · 12/03/2020 10:43

Thanks error. Smile

Clark University has canceled their accepted students/offer holders days, though we could go and get the same tour and info session we had last summer. So not worth the drive and the hotel stay.

DD is still waiting to hear from everyone else, but she should have word from all of the other uni's she applied to by the end of the month or early April.

It's a shame about Clark. They were going to pair her with a current student and attend classes together for a day. Now they're not letting visitors into classes.

MillicentMartha · 12/03/2020 17:17

Some UK universities are finishing early for Easter or only providing lectures online. I can imagine offer holder days might be affected as well.

Does anyone have any experience of applying to University with exams results in hand? DS is having a year out having taken his A levels last year.

He has an unconditional offer from Cardiff who have asked him to provide evidence of his A levels so he sent photos of his certificates. The OCR Maths certificate doesn't have a printed signature on it (the other two do) so they say they won't accept it. I'm not sure if this is an error on his certificate or not but not sure how else he can provide evidence!

oneteen · 12/03/2020 21:47

I would speak to OCR and also maybe email back to the Uni to see what they will accept... If anything other than the Exam Certificate..

LIZS · 12/03/2020 21:53

How odd. Dd has not had to send any copies of A level certifcates yet. She did gcse for one though. Did he apply last year ?

SirB0bby · 12/03/2020 22:02

LIZS, He applied elsewhere last year so it wasn't an issue but has reapplied this year to a different University and they need evidence. I have checked with someone else whose DD did A level maths with OCR and hers isn't signed either.

FabTab · 12/03/2020 22:06

@SirB0bby DS is in a similar position to your DS and has had to provide his A level certificates. His OCR certificate wasn’t signed and there isn’t an obvious place for it to be signed. All the universities which have asked to see it have accepted it. My guess is Cardiff don’t realise OCR certificates are unsigned. Hope you get this sorted.

SirB0bby · 12/03/2020 22:32

Thanks @FabTab

oneteen · 13/03/2020 09:18

I get the impression that exams will still go ahead... I'm sure our Dcs won't sit back thinking the exams will not go ahead.. But maybe worth mentioning that it looks like they will go ahead..

KingscoteStaff · 13/03/2020 16:13

All concerts, sports practices/matches and Parents' evenings have just been cancelled at DS's school.

specialted · 13/03/2020 16:33

Kingscote, same at DS school. And students told to wear a base layer as windows will all be open!!

StSaulOfSnacks · 13/03/2020 21:48

Bristol Uni offer holder days cancelled. DS had been due to go on Wednesday.

KingscoteStaff · 15/03/2020 11:59

Advice needed, possibly from those of you who work in academia or have older children at university...

DS is currently doing the footnotes and bibliography for his Cambridge PreU - a 3500 word piece of personal investigation. He knows that it will be put through anti-plagiarism software, and is bricking it that (perhaps early in in his reading) he might have copied down an apt phrase that then found its way into his massive amounts of research and thus unchanged into the actual essay.

Is there any way we can ‘pre-check’ it before submission? Deadline is midnight on Wednesday.

Ironoaks · 15/03/2020 12:26

I think you can use turnitin for this, but you might need a login.

Hugo he has put all reading in the bibliography and is footnoting whenever he has written ‘As Professor Smith so rightly says, ...’

What he’s worried about is if 3 months ago he read Professor Jones’s book where he said that Plath was haunted by over-distant parenting, scribbled down ‘over-distant parenting’ on a piece of paper and that phrase has ended up unattributed in his writing because he now thinks it was his own original thought.

Does that make sense?

Hoghgyni · 15/03/2020 16:20

I found this: Canyouuse Turnitin for free? Unfortunately, as a student, you cannotuse Turnitin for free.Turnitinonly makes its plagiarism prevention software available to universities and other institutions. ... For students, a good alternative toTurnitinis the Scribbr Plagiarism Checker.

KingscoteStaff · 15/03/2020 16:36

Thanks - will check out the Scribblr one.

JufusMum · 15/03/2020 17:05

DD has firmed up University of South Wales. It’s unconditional so no other options. DD is currently doing her nut about potential school closures and awaiting driving test number four Confused
