Dd has now firmed Medical Science at Exeter and Biomedical Science at Reading as her insurance.
Also now done her student finance application.
Guess we've now just got to see if exams are affected by Coronavirus in a couple of months.

MillicentMartha · 15/03/2020 22:27

Bet you’re happy she chose Wales, Jufus!
Currently wondering if university terms will start in Sept or if they’ll be delayed.

Snozzlemaid DS did his student finance application yesterday, but they haven’t emailed me yet so I can complete my bit.

It was in my junk mail!

Was just going to suggest you check junk as mine came through immediately.
Glad you found it.

Hoghgyni · 16/03/2020 11:38

DD is procrastinating and won't make a decision or apply for student finance in case it jinxes things. If she hasn't confirmed, she thinks she will be marginally less devastated if exams get deferred.

aibutohavethisusername · 16/03/2020 12:11

Hoghgyni I’m really hoping that DD & I can go to the Open Day in Exeter on Saturday. DD really wishes to firm UCL and if we go put Exeter as insurance.
I’m still stressing about the costs of UCL, especially as I work in travel money.

tudorbuff · 16/03/2020 12:35

We too are hoping to go to the Exeter university open day on Saturday. It will probably be first choice but like others my DS does not want to think about anything to do with university, hating the uncertainty. It will be very difficult to motivate them through this.

Hoghgyni · 16/03/2020 15:08

We keep reminding her that the more work she puts in now, whilst others are faffing, the more likely it is to pay off. I'm sure some (a minority of) students have written their exams off already as not taking place.

LIZS · 16/03/2020 15:35

Edinburgh offer holder days cancelled, they hope to run an online alternative. Our flights were with different operators each way - BA offering voucher or rebook, nothing yet from EJ.

Canitreallybehappening20 · 16/03/2020 15:42

The impact on universities of not getting next September's fees on time would be huge, so at the moment my prediction is that they will do everything they can to start on time even if exams are deferred - even if that means taking students on predicted grades (and possibly asking for volunteers to defer if that means they're oversubscribed?).

Or, has there been any discussion of switching to online open book A level exams? Universities seem to be working on that - it would take a while to devise new exam papers for a levels but could be done I expect.

aibutohavethisusername · 16/03/2020 15:57

tudorbuff DD had an email to say the Exeter offer day has been cancelled. I think we will go for the day to Exeter just so she can get a feel of the place.

It was indeed me Hugo!

I agree about the 'over offer' issue - I was wondering whether it might be addressed by asking students to volunteer to defer. Doesn't help with maths courses where STEP is used to 'further select' of course.

I agree about overprediction as well, though for those universities that then often allow lower grades in anyway, that might not matter too much to the univs.

I do think it would be hard to use mocks instead when students didn't do them on that basis if you see what I mean. Coming round to the idea that where there's been any course work, that may be used for the entire grade.

So stressful for this year's students - many sympathies to them and their dparents!

oneteen · 16/03/2020 18:26

Dds school seems to think one of two options will be taken.... Desks set two metres apart with exams going ahead... Or 50/50 grades given based on mocks/predictions... Which I think is probably a fairer way...

DDs school have said they think they will go ahead with pupils distanced from each other.

oneteen · 16/03/2020 20:23

I think some exams will be difficult if practicals not completed... Dds are all completed but only as at last week...

MillicentMartha · 16/03/2020 21:59

Hugo speaks sense. That’s what SLT at my school think will happen, too. Unless things deteriorate more quickly.

DD's old school starts teaching 4 year groups each day from tomorrow as they have insufficient staff available to run all lessons. The pressure to get through each syllabus is mounting for year 11s and year 13s.

thesunwillout · 17/03/2020 12:39

Checking in, DD been off college for 3 weeks I'll with a very strange virus.Hmm
Few mocks next week, but in the grand scheme, they're mocks.

thesunwillout · 17/03/2020 12:45

ill

HesMyLobster · 18/03/2020 00:11

DD has come home this evening with a high temperature. No other symptoms apart from a headache, but it means she (and the rest of us) now need to be in quarantine for 14 days.
She's completely devastated at the thought of missing school, especially because her French speaking exam is in 2 weeks time and she'll be literally going back to school on that day.
She was due to have practise sessions every day this week and next with her tutor Sad

They also haven't finished the course yet in Chemistry and have after school sessions planned over the next few weeks to get through it, and she's so anxious at the thought of missing so much. She thinks she'll never be able to properly catch up now.
I feel awful for her.

MillicentMartha · 18/03/2020 00:28

I’m so sorry, Lobster. Can she get some help via friends? Screen shots of notes, board etc and copies of work sheets/ powerpoints? There can’t be much more to cover. She could get a head start on revision and try to self teach the last few topics once she’s better? The teachers will be so busy trying to teach and preparing distance work for once the schools have closed, they might not have time to set individual work. Really feel for her.
