I think the suggestd move to increase the earnings level for paying it back is more useful. We can but watch and wait though.

The government, via HEFCE, already provide funds for high cost subjects - lab based science, for example, costs way more than £9000 to provide, so there is a teaching grant for universities that is targeted at high cost subjects and other areas of activity that requires special focus.
Any cut in funding which is not fully compensated for in government funding is going to cause job losses across the sector, which will have a huge impact on many students - for subjects where equipment isn't an issue, it's people that the bulk of the money go on.

I could have literally lynched Michael Ball this am when he played Abba's Slipping Through My Fingers.... I WAS DRIVING DD3 TO UNI FFS Michael!!!. I really struggled for a minute or two there.

Horsemad · 17/09/2017 17:57

He knew what he was doing TwitterQueen1...

hugoagogo · 17/09/2017 18:45

For some reason it's shopping that makes my eyes leak. Confused
I didn't need to buy any cereal today and only 1 bottle of milk.

dahliaaa · 17/09/2017 18:58

We are back in the car. DH really cried after we had walked away and he is a real toughie usually.
Need to stop myself messaging every two mins !

Horsemad · 17/09/2017 19:05

Aah dahliaaa Sad it's such an emotional time, your poor DH Sad

moneyquestion · 17/09/2017 19:10

It really is horse.
I think DH has been thinking about how vulnerable DS was last year and that just intensified everything even more.
Room was fine. Quite small but enough storage and good sized sink. Wifi hopeless but DS was expecting that. He took an Ethernet cable but forgot an adapter for his mac so going to get one tomorrow.

Horsemad · 17/09/2017 19:20

He's bound to be thinking of that dahliaaa, and anyone would feel the same.

Parenting is hard sometimes. Flowers

moneyquestion · 17/09/2017 19:46

Not sure why my name keeps flipping between two different ones ?? Sorry !

dahliaaa · 17/09/2017 19:47

Test. Ignore me !

Oldie2017 · 17/09/2017 20:22

They will all be fine. It's exciting rather than sad.

One of mine didn't bother with the lunch today and met his school friend who is at a different halls, his twin just told me. His twin said my money (I paid for the hall lunch) had been wasted! Glad to see someone considering my money.

Mind you all those students funded through loans most will never repay are similarly having their lunches paid by me and other tax payers I suppose, funded by the huge amount of tax some of us pay which is not funding most of my own's costs as I am funding them so I am a double payer being in the 25% of people who are net payers into the tax system in the UK plus funding the children's fees and rent and lucky me to have worked full time for 30 years to afford that.

fromwesttoeast · 17/09/2017 20:40

Dropped my DS today too. It's a bit of a lonely time for him so far. Flat mates seem to be all girls and when he went for a workout at the gym there was no one else there.
Hope he manages to find someone to talk to soon. Sad

dahliaaa · 17/09/2017 20:42

Is it a smaller uni from ? I think that's often the case at first. DS is also on his own this evening.

fromwesttoeast · 17/09/2017 21:07

Yes it is relatively small - but seemed ever so busy when we dropped off today! Hope our DSs start finding friends tomorrow.

user327854831 · 17/09/2017 21:13

Mine has ended up in a mixed flat with a 50/50 split between male and female. So far they've hardly seen one person because they have been out all day, the others seem pleasant enough; they'd already started to getting know one of them in advance on a closed fb group for new students in their hall.

clarenceparence · 17/09/2017 21:31

Well today has been a tough one! We dropped him off, the Halls at Sheffield are very nice. Both me and Hubbie in silent tears most of the day, not letting teen cotton on.

The drive home was spent sobbing - by both of us. I still can't go in his bedroom.

BUT he's happy, he's making friends, he's FaceTimed me and he's excited. He did spend a few hours on his own in his room, and I worried, but I think they all did.

Our kids have done so well to get this far, and we've done so well in helping them, and just being there for them. 🥂here's to us all 🥂

HSMMaCM · 17/09/2017 21:32

Hallelujah- DD has just asked when she should start packing. We leave at the crack of dawn Wednesday.

OddBoots · 17/09/2017 21:46

It's interesting to see how many dads have got emotional too, my dh hasn't but he is intensely pragmatic and I think he also feels like he is a better support if he keeps things matter of fact.

I keep getting emotional and seeing him so blasé makes me feel like I am being daft, I'm grateful for you all for helping me see that it can be normal.

BestIsWest · 17/09/2017 21:50

Oh yes, DH had to get the tissues out of the glove compartment. He cries at the drop of a hat though.

His freshers box from Nationwide had arrived when we got home and he phoned to say he'd packed a sheet instead of a duvet cover and had to borrow one so made arrangements to meet up on Tuesday to hand them over (I work a mile away from the uni at the moment).

Acacia123 · 17/09/2017 21:51

Hi all - will be dropping DS at Cardiff on Wednesday. I appreciate that halls will differ from place to place, but in general how does the shared kitchen work ie does each student get a cupboard and shelf in the fridge? Trying to gauge how much food I can send him off with before storage becomes an issue....is one if those under bed plastic storage boxes a good idea for a good stash of tinned foods?

Horsemad · 17/09/2017 21:58

Acacia my DS had a cupboard and a shelf in the fridge and a drawer in the freezer, although they all just chucked stuff in the freezer, regardless of whose shelf it was.

Everyone padlocked their cupboards initially but after a while they all relaxed and didn't bother.

He did keep lots of tins/dry goods under his bed. Smile

clarenceparence · 17/09/2017 22:04

Hi acacia, today mine had a cupboard, a fridge shelf, and a freezer drawer each.

They all bagsied one each - there are 8 of them, and they have 2 fridge freezers between them, and loads of cupboard space between the 8.

I think a box with tins in would be a good idea to keep in the room and top up! He kept his precious coffee in his room today!
