EMPTY NEST SUPPORT THREAD - PART 4

DD and her friends secured their house yesterday. There are 5 of them, and a new house came on, and they dashed over to see it, and then straight on to the Letting Agents to confirm they wanted to take it. As they were filling out the forms another group came in wanting the same property, and both groups' details were sent to the Landlord who confirmed they'd let it to DD and her friends. Small matter of immediate deposit of £430 plus agent's fee of £180 (per person). She's given our names and details as guarantors, and says it will just be for her room, not for the whole house! Presume we'll get something through the post soon and will need to check it carefully. She's in Catered Halls this year, which she has really been enjoying, but this should be much cheaper even though it still seems quite expensive.

That sounds about right for what DS was doing in the summer last year, he left it until late and then just slotted in with whoever, and it has worked very well for their household. I wasn't surprised they asked him for a retainer, just that he had to do it so early. The whole thing has been interesting to watch.

Difficult isn't it? Does he collect anything?

My DD collects coins and we have bought her the 2017 set of Royal Mint Beatrix Potter 50p collection - the ones in colour and real silver.

Amazon have some great pop up graduation cards too! Look for the supplier "grand gifts".

There are nice boy bracelets around - my son was given on in leather/silver from his uncle for his 18th.

Squirrills · 07/07/2017 11:54

Well done to all those graduating. DS did very well despite some personal problems near exams.
Glad to hear he did it Needmore. Does he have a decent watch? Most youngsters don't wear watches but DS has decided he would like a nice watch - almost a mark of being a proper adult. So that sorts his graduation gift. Ceremony mid July.

mumeeee · 07/07/2017 14:04

Congratulations to everyone's DC
Notso DD3's registration is also between 8 and 9.15. She isn't having any official photos as DH is a photographer and she wants him to do them as he did her sisters. She graduates on 14th so a week to go.
I'm unbelievably proud of her for sticking to her course and finally getting there
She has a fee more interviews coming up

Needmoresleep · 07/07/2017 15:47

Unfortunately we got him a watch (engraved) for his 18th. However the Student Union shop seem to have some nice, smallish, momentos. School is one thing, but they have got through University as independent adults and it seems important to mark their achievements.

It seems DS missed out on a prize in his favourite subject by a single mark. A pity, even though it is great he got so close.

Squirrills · 07/07/2017 16:11

Yes, it's nice to get something to keep, we didn't really do that for 18th or 21st.
I had thought of a leather briefcase or satchel until DS mentioned a watch?

zizza · 07/07/2017 23:02

I got some cufflinks from Notonthehighstreet - unusual design meaning "longevity" - he loved them (last year I got dd a graduation charm for her bracelet she had for her 21st) and a picture frame for the certificate and photo.

Notsoskinnyminny · 13/07/2017 22:09

mumeeee hope you all have a lovely day tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to you than it was to us on Tuesday Grin

mumeeee · 15/07/2017 09:34

Thanks notso. We had a wonderful day weather a bit wet and windy at first but then fine. DD3 was awarded the Governors prize for Significant achievement in the Final assessment as well as getting her degree. So all very proud.
Notso we have both been around for awhile and both our DDs have had difficulties. I say again well done to your DD and to you too for supporting her through these years.

mumeeee · 15/07/2017 09:36

That should have said final assignment not assessment

Kez100 · 15/07/2017 14:58

Fantastic achievement - well done her!

My DD has her result. A first! So happy for her!

mumeeee · 15/07/2017 19:03

Gcongrats to everyone and their DC. It has most definitely been a team effort for everyone I read about on here.

Needmore, we were at the same graduation ceremony 😄. The delay in the issuing of results was appalling. It was 4.30am here before we heard from DS. We had gone to bed (no surprise) we had been waiting all day with our bottle of champagne ready to Skype and join in with the celebrations.
Anyway with no other children and Ds staying on for his masters, I feel like my time on mumsnet is almost at an end. I am so glad that everyone has been kind enough to offer support and advice both here on mumsnet and in real life.
Thank you xx

DD3 has a job. It's not what she wants to do long term but has taken it for now. While she carries on looking for computer jobs.

mumeeee · 03/08/2017 14:33

Well I have a very upset daughter. Her job has lasted q week. Through no fault of her own. She's worked hard but it didn't work out

Notsoskinnyminny · 05/08/2017 17:38

Oh mumeeee its so hard for them. DS was made redundant in March and has only just got another job although its not in his field. Its temporary for a year and an hour commute - driving wouldn't be much quicker and there'd be parking costs on top of his petrol and the pay is terrible. At this rate he'll never be able to leave home.

DDs got an interview on Friday but there's a lot of competition for a couple of posts. I'm trying to boost her confidence whilst preparing myself for if she doesn't through the first round.

mumeeee · 05/08/2017 17:47

Well the job was working for a fundraising company and all the shifts were in the evening. A difficult job for her anyway and a bit out of her comfort Zone.
She seems better about it today and had earned a bit of money from it.
She has another interview in Birmingham this time next Thursday.
She is getting a lot of interviews for computer jobs so hopefully she'll get there soon. Well done for your Dd for getting the interview. Hope it's successful

Needmoresleep · 07/08/2017 09:15

Isthiscorrect, DS is also staying on for another year. Chance to meet for a coffee... Wrights Bar, or somewhere more upmarket. Five out of nine on his course are staying on, albeit for different Masters programs, so he starts with a good core group of friends. He has also picked up some research assistant work, which he is pleased about, though inevitably easier for "quants". He has a compulsory summer school so officially starts fairly soon, and is already doing some preliminary reading. He plans to make a couple of PhD applications this autumn to test the waters, so has also started on the equivalent of a PS (and no, I have no interest in reading it.) The nice thing for us is that he has moved home. Its sort of inevitable that London based DC boomerang, so no empty nest for us.

The wait was cruel. Previous years the results had been published well before the deadline, this year after. I hope you enjoyed your Skye champagne. The graduation was lovely, though I suspect your son was at a different time. Just economics and social policy at DS'. His cohort was astonishingly diverse, yet by the third year they were bonded and mutually supportive. And us parents were linked in our pride of them.

mumeeee, good luck for your daughter. Having followed her journey over the last few years, I am sure she will get there in the end. And best wishes to all the other DC who are embarking on the next stage of their lives.

mumeeee · 06/12/2017 22:44

Hi everyone how are your DCs getting on with their job hunting or in the jobs they have got.
DD3 is still at home so I'm not actually an empty nester now although she is planning to move out as soon as she has her ideal job.
She is actually doing 2 jobs at the moment. One for an events company. It's casual work but she has had a few shifts since she started a couple of months ago.
She is also doing tempory work for the Royal mail.
She has had some interviews for software development jobs

mumeeee · 13/12/2017 10:11

Anyone still around Now the university years are over? Notso how is your DD doing?

Notsoskinnyminny · 28/12/2017 09:25

Hi mumeeee she didn't get her dream job and then decided she wasn't going to apply for her plan b. She's picked up more hours at the part time job she had at uni but has turned down their management programme as she doesn't want to be there forever but at the same time doesn't know what she's qualified to do as she doesn't want to teach!

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and maybe they'll both land their dream jobs in 2018.

mumeeee · 13/01/2018 22:53

Hi Notso. I've only just seen this sorry your DD didn't get her dream job. Having a degree should help with getting any job but as we both know that isn't always the case.
What is her dream job? DD3 is getting fairly regular work with her casual woek at the moment. She is still applying for computer jobs.

mumeeee · 05/03/2018 20:34

Hi Everyone. Thought I'd just post on here again to see how everyone"s DC are doing.
DD is still with the events company. February was very quiet she only had 2 shifts. March is looking better she already has 8 confirmed shifts. She actually enjoys the job but still wants to get into IT.
She had an Interview for an IT job at a local company today.

RockyRoadster · 06/03/2018 08:20

Wishing your daughter good luck today 😊

RockyRoadster · 06/03/2018 08:22

Sorry, just seen it was yesterday 😬
