For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Fat free vegan banana bread

It's in American, sorry.

1 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup unbleached white flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
3 very ripe bananas, mashed
1/2 cup soy milk
1/3 cup apple sauce

Optional
1/4 cup chopped dates
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (omit to reduce fat)

Preheat the oven to 400 and spray a muffin pan with non-stick spray. Sift together the flours, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. In another bowl, mash the banana with the sugar, soymilk, apple sauce, and agave nectar.

Pour the banana mixture into the flour mixture and stir just until combined. Add in the dates and walnuts, and pour into 12 muffin cups. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Serve to everyone who came running toward the aroma of fresh baked banana muffins!

SuperBunny · 30/03/2009 02:30

perhaps I should state that the recipe is from the fat free vegan blog.

EachPeachPearMum · 30/03/2009 06:01

Thanks!
apple sauce? is it just stewed apple? agave nectar?

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 30/03/2009 07:02

hello!

You mostly don't need me to tell you how lovely Toot is.....but she bloody well is!

And she works really really hard and is an ace, fab cook, and only slightly madder than I expected !! .

Had a brilliant weekend, absolutely amazing part of the world, and DC's got on well.

Wish we could have met more veggers but another time.......

Sharp but bright here,

I have read the thread but don't want to do a monologue in reply so have a good day to all, get well soon if you need to have a good day all round.

Long Melford is in Suffolk LR, it's a lovely place to visit. If you would like to know where else to visit, give me a shout

Would love to meet up Franny. Do I need my passport to cross the Suffolk/Essex border?

Welcome EPPM

hello EPPM, I also love your name

I have a recipe for fruit loaf which is very very easy (fat free, just egg, flour, sugar and fruit) and keeps for a week in a tin and is good for iron and tastes gorgeous (with a little spread or butter on it) and it kept me going through breast-feeding as it is so sustaining

Also, remember when you make something like spag bol, it also hasa tin of tomaties in, so you can count that!

Tinned fruit also counts (especially as many stores also stock ones in fruit juice rather than syrup) so tinned peaches/mandarins might make a snack for you if you are craving non-seasonal fruit.

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 09:11

arf @ molly's name

morning all
eachpeach all these suggestions are good, aren't they
i second trying soya milk (especially a sweetened one) or rice or oat milk
they are all quite nice tasting IN things eg tea, cereal, smoothies
not sure if you would want to drink them by themselves until you get a taste for it

if we all FOCUS today (i could do with it, have bought 2 new pairs of trousers slightly on tight side)
and list what meals we are having and all that, perhaps it will give eachpeach some ideas

i have just had oats with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, raisins, dried apricots, apple, grapes and banana
= 5 portions already, not too dusty

lemur have you been on aitch's blog yet? have you tried making wakey wakey cakeys? they are superb breakfast for blw babies, made from cereal, fruit and milk only

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 09:12

oh i had soya milk with the oats
that would have been a bit of a flaky meal otherwise

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 09:13

ds2 is eating wakey cakey and smacking his lips [beam]

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 30/03/2009 09:17

I want wakey cakey!

I am too bloody ill to go into work again Up all night snorting and coughing and period has just arrived.

However I can report that my home-made concoction of myrtyle with thyme, honey, ginger and lemon is very nice.

Porridge with seeds for breakkie - no fruit in house
DH will be sent out later.

Home made mushroom soup for lunch

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 30/03/2009 09:26

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 09:27

poor molly
all that rogering has done you in

wakey wakey cakeys
i just use about 2 or 3 oz of any cereal and mush with banana, rice milk, and sometimes grated apple
i reckon you could con an older child into thinking they were a treat, if you added cocoa

littlerach · 30/03/2009 10:13

Morning ladies.

Molly, could i have the recipe for fruit loaf please?

I am making easter biscuits to day and thery smell delicious.

EachPeach, I make porridge with water (don't really like it with milk) and it is fine. Soemtimes I add milk afterwards. Dd2 likes it with banana or apple in, or raisins and cinnamon.

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 30/03/2009 10:51

Ingredients
350g Mixed Fruit (I use raisins, sultanas, cherries, apricot and sometimes some nuts as well)
200g Soft Brown Sugar
270g Self Raising Flour
3/4 Pint Freshly Made Tea
2 Medium Eggs

DIRECTIONS
Make the tea, I use Yorkshire Tea
Pour over the Fruit and Sugar, and leave to soak overnight (if you don't have time for this, eight minutes in a microwave plumps the fruit up beautifully)
After the Fruit and Sugar has soaked in the tea, (make sure tea has colled if using microwaved fruit and tea!) mix the Flour and beaten Eggs with the Fruit and Sugar and cook in a greased 2lb Loaf Tin in a pre-heated oven at 150ºC (300ºF, Gas Mark 2) for 1.5 hours.
Cool on a Wire Rack and serve sliced with butter.

It freezes very well and keeps for a week or more if you wrap it well in clingfil or foil)

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 30/03/2009 10:52

Oh, I often use this with less sugar too. The fruit makes it sweet anyway.

littlerach · 30/03/2009 10:53

Thanks Molly, will make later.

ChairmumMiaow · 30/03/2009 10:58

I'm doing well today. Banana, currants and an apple so far (with cheese, yummy)

Sorry to hear people are/have been ill. That fruit loaf sounds nice too.

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 30/03/2009 11:19

molly (ace name). You need a whisky toddy tonic.

Boco · 30/03/2009 11:24

Been to gp this morning - got tonsillitis so must have got it from dd1. Am covered in spotty rash too. And fever. So, I bought lucozade and raspberries and am going back to bed for a little bit longer. Hopefully antibiotics will work quite fast.

But there are no children here! For the first time in weeks! [cries with relief]

Hope other ill people feeling better.

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 30/03/2009 11:32

Awww Boco....you really deserve a break.

If Toot doesn't appear for a day or so, it is because she appears to have a wnakey dongle.......

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 30/03/2009 12:37

Boco, I empathise. Try and power-rest!
x

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 30/03/2009 12:38

mitsubishi - that's no way to describer her dp...

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 12:46

boco oh man
get well soon

Guadalupe · 30/03/2009 13:14

Each peach - I think porridge made with milk is gross, I always do it with water and dcs add a bit of milk to theirs. Just what you're used to I suppose.

Boco - glad you have the abs, Take them and rest and you will spring into productivity by, um, tommorrow hopefully!

Molly - you better keep on with that Myrtle!

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 13:18
