For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

All children love bubbles.

TooT.

Is Long Melford in Suffolk?

We have booked ot stay in Suffolk for a week in August.

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2009 19:59

i'm just going to fill up the thread by myself

i was assertive with Neighbourhood Boy
he called for ds1 and when he said "no" he didn't want to come out, NB said "someone has been messing about with your trees again"
I came out and there was earth thrown around again but thank goodness the trees were still in the pots
i said "you know what L?" "what?" "I think it was you that did this." "No it wasn't me! I saw them do it, and I chased them for you!" "Well I don't really believe you."

(at which he had grace to look sheepish! thank god. last time the most unsettling thing was his complete lack of fluster about the whole affair)

I said "If anyone does any more mean tricks on us I will be extremely cross. So if you did this L I would be very careful in future, because I am not going to be happy if anything else happens round here."

and he went away looking chagrinned

was that good or did I scare a child meanly?

there is more
i went to playpark with ds1 and there were loads of teenagers there swearing loudly - it's only little play area so you couldn't pretend you had not heard - and i stood up and shouted "EXCUSE ME EVERYONE can you STOP SWEARING, this is a children's playpark and if you are so BIG AND TOUGH what are you doing in a place for LITTLE CHILDREN"
and they shuffled a bit and 1 apologised
the other 2 adults in park ignored whole thing
since when did we all stop expecting respect and decent behaviour from children? i will be writing to daily mail at this rate

anyway
that was all for today

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2009 20:01

EXCEPT

1 hour at gym

melon
grapes
banana
raisins
baked beans
kidney beans
swede
raisins
chickpeas
carrots
cauliflower

littlerach · 29/03/2009 20:02

Actually, I htink you did the right thing.
On both occasions.
I won't go in the park in town as it si full of yobs.

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 20:05

Very well done Franny.

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2009 20:17

well although i shouted i wasn't raving
i just shouted so they could all hear me at once

anyway
1 ds down 1 to go

mollyroger · 29/03/2009 20:21

Franny, that was both brave and the Right Thing to do. Both times

One can never have too much bubble mixture in my opinion...

The time thing is a pain in the arse. I want grown up time now with comfort telly and peace and ds2 is happily trotting off to bed and ds1 opens his big mouth and says ''technically, you know it is only 7.15, and we can't be expected to just turn on tiredness just because someone has changed the clocks...''
Ds2 is now refusing to go to bed too. So I told ds1 he can jolly well do bedtime story then.

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 20:22

I have a mother problem

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 20:26

That wasn't meant to be an announcement, it was meant to be, 'please will you help'

pinkspottywellies · 29/03/2009 20:31

Nice one Franny, on both counts I would've asked them to stop swearing too but I like your big and tough line and will store it for future use!

Peas, carrots, tomato, cuc, jam.

I planned to have a nap both afternoons this weekend. Didn't happen Going to bed now.

LOL at sling city being dark and dangerous and Mr Molly trying to kill you all! Glad you had a nice time TooT. LR I wouldn't let a few yobs put me off - I would stare menacingly at them

DD stayed awake in bed for about an hour but just chattered away to herself! DS is just having another feeding frenzy. And apparently I'm not going to bed yet.

FrayedKnot · 29/03/2009 20:33

Great idea Moll. Tuck them up and give them a book and close the door

I accidentally let DS stay up quite late last night so he was tired tonight anyway. Will try that again anoterh time

Franny you should have a sticker for your fierceness. I think you did right both times.

I have just realized I can go to bed early tonight

I ate too much pie.

mollyroger · 29/03/2009 20:40

Bunny, I have read your thread and i am emoting like buggery but cannot think of anything constructive to say!
I wish we had a ''don't know what to say but I'm sorry for your troubles'' emoticon...

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 20:42

Thanks Molly

mollyroger · 29/03/2009 20:46

My mum is still barely talking to me after i refused to make her a FB friend...

(i just couldn't bear her knowing how much I swear!)

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 20:50

My mum is my FB friend so don't mention this on there!

mollyroger · 29/03/2009 20:57

Ha! Righto...

pinkspottywellies · 29/03/2009 21:01

SB I've read and sympathised too - same thoughts as molly!

EachPeachPearMum · 29/03/2009 22:03

Hi - sorry- I have no desire to crash your chat... but I really need some help improving my fruit/veg intake
DS is only 8 wo, so atm my diet is anything I can grab whilst running past the kitchen... tends to be chocolate, toast, more chocolate. Bf makes me SO hungry... I eat loads, but not particularly healthily other than meal times.

I started off really well after his birth, whilst DH was home- because Dh was feeding me all the time but it has deteriorated, over the weeks.

I have no excuse really- DS is an angel baby- feeds every 3 or 4 hours, sleeps well, so I do have time to make/eat- I just am so uninspired. I usually (when not pg/bf) eat plenty of fruit and veg (but not 10 a day, you weirdos ) but I seem to be right off fruit atm too.

Any suggestions welcome!
I have been adding an extra portion of side veg to our main meals, but I need to do more than this, I know.
We eat most things... am also blessed with an omnivorous 3 yo...

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2009 22:16

hello eachpeach
i always like your name
(and it is v 10/10 )

well what do you usually eat for meals? we can see if we can do a makeover
it's going to be hard if you don't fancy fruit, tbh - what about fruit salad? my advice for new babies is to make up a big bowl of fruit salad the night before (or better still get dh to do it)
then when you wake up it is already there for your breakfast, and you can snack on it during the day

dried fruit is great snack for bfing
mix your favourite types with nuts, and maybe some choc chips or yogurt raisins to make more like a treat
again get it prepared in advance then you have no excuse not to reach for it
take the container with you when you sit down to bf

beans / lentils in a meal adds 1 portion and helps with hunger

crudites cut up in advance to dip in hummus?

fruit juice?
smoothies with juice and bananas?
any good?

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 22:29

Porridge or oats for breakfast with a handful of raisins or blueberries and sliced banana

Dried fruit: raisins or sultanas or you can get more interesting things like cranberries, cherries, apricots, apple, banana chips, mango

Nuts

Trail mix - you can make your own very easily - we call it bird seed. And, if you add chocolate chips it feels like a treat

Apples, bananas, grapes - all easy to grab and eat without any prep (wash grapes and apples when you buy them so you don't have to worry about it when you are hungry)

Chop up veggies, like Fran said for hummous.

Not F&V but other good snacks might be: Yoghurts, cheese, crackers, rice cakes, cereal bars, fruit cake, malt loaf

EachPeachPearMum · 29/03/2009 22:54

Ooh- thank you! Loads of ideas.
I forgot to mention I'm trying to avoid milk atm, as DS seems to have nasty nappies when I have it.... I was drinking 1.5 pints a day in pregnancy absolutely craved it! Hence the copious amounts of toast- breakfast, and also Hot cross buns which I forgot to mention. Orange Juice seems to have similar effect in ds...

Is porridge made with water edible?

Meals wise- tend to have soups and crusty bread for lunch, sometimes beans on toast or scrambled egg on toast, or baguette with pate.
Dinner - I try to menu plan... so last week we had:-

Spaghetti Bolognaise (incl courgettes, peppers, mushrooms)
Vegetable kebabs with salad and rice
Beef Stir-fry (with loads of veg)
Fish with roasted mediterranean veg
Sausage and Mash (I always include a carrot or 2 in the mash, plus side vegetables)
Beef casserole
chicken pesto pasta (again, plenty of veg- courgette, mushroom, peppers, tomato)

All fairly good on the veg front. Don't really have anything afterwards.
I think I have gone off sweetish fruit (eg bananas, raisins) and all my favourites aren't in season (satsumas, nectarines, peaches).
I love hummous... but it doesn't like me much - am intolerant of garlic.

You're right- the key is to prepare stuff first... so I can just grab it as and when. Does using fruit (ie banana) in cake count? is it really healthy? (have lots of bananas that need using up due to being 'off' them. Thanks.

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 23:22

I wouldn't use water for porridge. Can you use soy milk? Or rice or almod milk?

You can make your own hummous (if you have time) without garlic or try a beany dip of some sort. Also gucamole and/ or salsa.

Fruit in cakes probably depends on the quanity of fruit and other stuff. I have a recipe for banana bread with no sugar, eggs or butter.

Also, use mouldy bananas for smoothies milk alternative. You can make porridge out of pureed bananas too.

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 23:22

Also, I think my black bean brownies deffo count as a portion as the only contain beans and banana and melted chocolate but they are a bit hardcore...

EachPeachPearMum · 29/03/2009 23:30

Would love recipe for banana bread please!
Do you have a recipe for hummous too... or will there be one in mn recipes?
I think black beans are a step too far for me... are they like japanese red beans? I am not keen- sweet beans are just too odd...
I haven't tried soy milk- last time I had it it was so gross... but that was about 20 years ago, so maybe it's improved or my tastebuds have changed. Will get some tomorrow and experiment I think.

SuperBunny · 29/03/2009 23:37

Will post the recipe later/ tomorrow.

Black beans are not sweet they are just like baked beans but are black. They're used a lot in Mexican and South American food.

HUmmous I am rubbish at - def look in recipe section here or on foodblogsearch.com
