Mangohood - 10 / 10 thread

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Yesterday I had peanut butter
a plum
chinese stir fry with beansprouts, mange toutes, peppers, onion, cabbage, mushrooms, pomegranite juice.
Must try harder.

mollyroger · 14/03/2009 10:03

But I did have LOADS of excersise. 3 hours digging and planting on allotty, 4 miles walked and some, erm, aerobic excercise later...well it made my pulse race!

You moved! Will c + v my crucial mango questions -

Pink - sorry about the hearing thing. You don't really want him to be able to join the navy, though. Do you?

Can I ask a portion-related question? God knows why I'm bothering, I'm barely managing 5 a day at the moment, but I actually clicked on the link at the bottom of the page of the portion sizes link on franny's op. It's weird and has confused me. Why would 7 cherry tomatoes be a portion, but 14 button mushrooms? Does that not seem like a lot?

And what does '2 inch slice of mango' mean? 2 inches thick? 2 inches long? How do you all count your mango portions? 'Tis mango season, finally, I want to be able to count them properly. Even if they are one of 3 portions in a day...

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2009 10:12

i reckon there are 1.5 to 2 portions in a mango
agree about the slice thing, is daft
you do need a lot of veg in some cases to make a portion - eg a good sized bowl of lettuce
i think it is to do with the amount of fibre and nutrients they contain - fibre is a large part of why eating f+v is good for you - so you are getting a standardised amount in each portion
hence a few tbsp of peas, but lots of mushrooms
they are not equally nutritious / fibrous by amount

Ok then, I'm going to buy big mangoes and count half a mango as one portion.

I feel much better with that sorted.

The portions are based on weight (it says on the list) so that's why stuff like lettuce and mushrooms are bigger portions to look at. [small print bore]

Thanks for all your support about the hearing thing. No I don't particularly want him to join the Navy!! But I don't want something out of his control to stop him IYSWIM. It's the limitations that upset me. (Although BBB says she thinks it not necessarily a blanket no.) But he might want to do something like that - DH and my dad, step-dad and grandad were all in the Navy and I think joining the forces is something to proud of.

Love the title

Apple juice
Pear/raisins
Apple

oh maaaan, I feel old. My beautiful son is in love with the Ska look and I have found him a white shirt, pinstripe waitscoat and skull and crossbone tie. He is wearing straight black jeans and is demanding a pork pie hat...

He looks rather fabulous, actually.

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2009 12:16

Haven't read whole of other thread but wanted to say hello. Good title

Hello

Pink, I know 2 people who are completely deaf in 1 ear. 1 had no problems really and the other is my cousin who got a great job at the BBC which she thinks she got on the basis of her 'disability' - she counts as legally deaf despite being able to hear with her other ear.

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2009 13:07

bunny you haven't emailed me back - or have you?

molly did you see the book title about the food thing? they may have it at your library also

Enormous fruit salad of strawberries, raspberries, banana, pomegranate, passionfruit, apple, grapes and melon. I have been missing fruit, not eating as much as usual on this bloody WW.

littlerach · 14/03/2009 15:40

Cut and paste from other thread:

fternoon all.

TooT, did you do yuor hair?

WEll we survived dd1's party, tough it was tough at one point
They all loved the treasure hunt.
And ate loads.

Pink, I ma sorry to hear about ds.
A good friend of mine has a son who is almost 2 and he is deaf in both ears. He is talking a bit now, and seems ot hear quite a bit (has hearing aids). He starts at preschool next month.
And dd2 goes ot school with a boy who has v limited hearing in both ears. He manages v v well.
But you are probably fed up with tales of hearing loss

All I've had is a banana today and cereal.
Will make up for it later.
