For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

ladies may I ask a question about the 10/10 group ethos?

if yes then see below....

Do you have to eat them raw or can the fruit/veg be cooked in something..

ie if I had raisins on my museli glass of orange juice.
then an apple mid morning
and home made soup with onion, sweetcorn, tomato's carrots and chicken
hand full of blueberries mid afternoon
brocoli, cabbage, potato's Lamb chop for dinner

how many would that be? would I get one for the soup even though it had a full portion of each of the veg in it? Would I get one for the raisins on my museli?

thanks - sorry for the intrusion.

littlerach · 21/01/2009 16:29

Yes to raisins
WRT soup, thunk it depends on many things. Probably 2?

Frankly, coming from a group of people who I'm sure in the past admitted to fancying Bernard Cribbins, fancying Obama seems quite reasonable.

Not for me though. Lovely as he seems.

I'm sorry to hear about your fingers, TooT.

Squash, parsnip and carrot soup
An avocado
A clementine

FairLadyRantALot · 21/01/2009 16:31

possibly about 9, although depends on your portion size, etc...
F&v can be raw or cooked or juiced.
With mashed/blended food the fiber is broken down a bit, making it not as valuable in fibre, and there is somewhat of a rule of how many ml are one portion.
Juice will only ever count as one protion, due to fiber being pretty much removed and 10/10 is not just about teh vitamins etc...but very much about upping the fiber intake!
Pulses will only count as one portion, i.e. you may take lots of chickpeas in, but they will only be counted as 1, but different pulses on the same day will count as a further one portion, etc...(at least I think so)
nuts and seeds don't count...

think that is that....if I got it wrong, Franny will send me to the pit, I suppose....

thank you all..

so with the exception of the apple mid morning - this is what I ate yesterday so I guess it wouldnd't take much to up it to 10.

Would it be alright if I popped in from time to time? I am going to try this and see if I can make it work

pinkspottywellies · 21/01/2009 16:35

Hi greyskull. Of course you can ask a question!! We argue discuss at length about what is included and how many you can count for soups and smoothies etc, but the general consensus is that raw is best, followed by as little cooking as poss through cooking, blending, and juice is last in the hierarchy.

The 5-a-day guidelines say you can only count juice, dried fruit, lentils as one (each) of your 5 - I, personally extrapolate that and say if I'm eating 10 then I can count 2

Raisins count. Nuts don't (although lots of us try and sneak them in under Franny's radar!) The soup - you have to be realistic about how much actual veg is in there. If it's blended then your body doesn't have to digest the fibre in the same way so while of course it counts but it's not technically as good for you as chunky soup, then steamed or raw veg IYSWIM.

Hope that answers your main points. Most of us are fairly hopeless tbh (sorry ladies but we are) but just coming on the thread and listing makes you think about what you're eating throughout the day and I find I eat better cause of it.

Are you going to join us?

Sorry for all the waffle - someone has probably said it much more succinctly while I've been typing!

mollyroger · 21/01/2009 16:38

er, That was franny --and me possibly. We liked his puppy dog eyes.

TinyWhiteFeather · 21/01/2009 17:09

Does anyone know how I can be iron deficient and anaemic when I have quite an iron rich diet?

I was looking up foods to eat to boost it and a lot of them are things I eat daily.
Joking aside, nuts are a good source of iron.
Tis not fair
And tomatoes, and I have something tomato based nearly everyday.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 21/01/2009 17:10

thanks for the welcome ladies - I don't think it is odd to find Barak Obama handsome - I think he is yummy and add to that the zing of being the most powerful man in the world he really is something special.

As for Bernard Cribbins well if you like that sort of thing.

am going out to my cake decorating course in half an hour so will not be back until tomorrow but I will pop back in tomorrow

mollyroger · 21/01/2009 17:13

Holy moly, just seen your cake pictures...

I like cake decorating but I'd love to do classes. I'm very proud of what I can achieve without a book or picture, but they do look very rough around the edges
